how can i tell if the motor i'm looking at is in good condition before i spend the money to actually drop it in one of my hatches? like i mean, is there any way i could tell if it runs or if its been blown? let me know as soon as yall can. thanks, and by the way its a b18.

see if a compression test has been done to it. check the oil in it, take off the valve cover and just see if anything looks out of the ordinary like a valve sitting lower than another and things like that

compression test :goodjob:, btw...is it a b18a/b or b18c? on a vtec motor it should be at least 170 across the board.

its a b18a1 and i took off the valve cover and nothing looks "out of the ordinary", just gotta buy a new valve cover gasket now. i'm not really the motor genius, but can you get th compression checked if its just sitting in my garage? let me know, i really dont wanna spend the money on a tranny and mounts for nothing.

and another question for yall, whats the easiest power gainage out of the b18a1? example: what's the best head? best pistons? i/m? and i'd like none of these mods to have to be machine done. thanks for yalls time.

well i'm ballin on a budget, cuz anyone thats ever been on probation knows that shit is a bitch. but i was just gonna do it peice by peice until i had everything i wanted for the motor before i dropped it in., so all the b18 heads and trannys bolt right up? so i should get the b18c1 head and tranny? could you upgrade the head with itr cams and cam gears?

Non vtec blocks DONT just bolt up to vtec heads....you have to do a vtec head conversion.......all b-series tranny's work on all b series motors though.....

vtec heads.......b16....b18c1...b18c5....

what all would have to be done to put, lets say a b18c1 head on a b18a1 block? but we're kinda getting off the subject.....how can i tell if the motor i have will even run when i drop in in my hatch? i was told it came out of an integra with only a lil over 100k miles, and it was running perfect but you cant believe everything someone says.

ls/vtec conversion kit....like $300 in parts to do it right i think.....plus u gotta tap the head and shit.....then labor.......make him guarantee you it will work......shit all i can think of, if he's sure it runs then he's do it...

so pretty much it takes alot of profesional work to convert the non vtec to a vtec head on a non vtec block? if so whats the best way i can get power out of my b18a1?
Jdm94Coupe

best way to get power is turbo......alternatives......better tranny, new intake manifold, cams, pistons, head work.....shit unlimited amounts of shit u can do, lol

why use cable tranny?
hondahatch22
02-02-2006, 08:49 AM
cuz the car i'm putting it in is already cable and i heard its alot more work to throw in a hydro tranny

get a tranny of a JDM B18C5 if you want lsd, and get a B18C5 head. but there right , you will need to get the non-vtec to v-tec conversion kit and install or get some one to install it so it is done right.

your best bet if you want v tec and want it on a budget is to go with a gsr swap with a cable trans. to get you started but the way your talkin with doin the frankinstien is gonna burn 1 in your pocket just to get the parts to get the motor together and more for the aftermarket internals and mounts and shit.not to mention if somethin needs machined cuz your not even shure if has compretion and althat or if n e thing is warped . machine shop fees arent tho great around here for the work done.

you will need to use the LS intermediate shaft, and yes they should fit.

ok, just a few more questions i gotta get answers for......do i need the ls fuel pump or any aftermarket fuel pump? and can i use the std. civic harness to wire up to the ls harness? let me know peeps. thanks for yalls time

you should be able to use any b-series fuel pump, but if you're looking into gettin more serious then go with walbro 255, and the engine harness shouldn't be that much of a problem, you should be able to use the SI engine harness 88-91 I believe, not sure though.
