Hey I was going to see if you guys could give me some input on a decent beater car. I dont have much money to spend (1-2k) and I would like to have something that could have some potential for power with an engine swap or without one. Right now Im thinking about getting a 1990-93 240SX. Any reasons why i should/should not get this particular car? If you think I shouldnt; share what car you think I should get instead (year, average cost, etc.) Anyway thanks for any help.

Can you find a decent 240 for that price? Seems to me most are in the 3-4K price range.
Do you need it as a driver or are you going to turn it into a project car as soon as you get it?

Id go for it but Im in the process of getting a job right now and cant spend that kind of money yet. Ill need the car as a driver by the end of the summer for sure but before then Ill probably treat it more as a project or rather a fix it in my price range.

I paid around $500 for my 240 with a blown headgasket , clutch and radiator. I sold the head and some other stock motor parts for around $150 making my net cost $350. It has a good paintjob too (see sig).
I swapped in a RB20, new clutch, and several other parts for the swap and my total cost is up to $3300 right now. Been driving it since August.
Better hurry up and get your 240sx before FnF3 comes out. 240's will be the hot stuff then. :D

It would really work best for me if I could get it for under 1k because Im currently out of a job and Im trying to go as low as possible.

Just keep your eye out, kid. I noted this red prelude sitting around my friend's campus. It was always in the same spot, rusty lookin' rotors, so I asked him about it. He said it'd been there about 2 months or so. I asked him if he wanted rid of it. He said 1K but it didn't wanna start. I'm working on talking him down.

you can buy a very decent ef civic/crx (1988-91) they are cheap, light, reilable, handles well, and many aftermarket parts and engine swaps

I can vouch for EF chassis. I drive a 91 civic hatch. Bought the car for 100$ not running (two dead cylinders) rebuilt it and did suspension work and now I can hold in mountains with a lotus, ferrari, Z06, Supra, and several Jetta's and such. They're NOT bad cars...just fugly til you put some wrench time in.

Depends on the company. Old mercedes, mid-aged hondas and mid and new age toyota's go forever.
