i have a 90 240 sr20det. the motor has 36000 . under load, when the turbo spools good it smokes bad.deep black smoke. but since the motor has such lil miles it would of have been fucked every day for the valve stem seals or piston rings to be bad right? im hoping it is the turbo crapping out. i have a t28 ball bearing, not the t25 on the stock sr.

black smoke=fuel. could be tons of different issues ranging from a boost leak to a bad ECU.

can you drive the car all the way through the revs as long as you don't go into boost? does it sputter/cough when the car goes into boost? are there certain times it does it over others like does it start to get crappy at a certain level of boost or rev's? any aftermarket tuning electronics on the car?

doesnt boost strongly. no electronics cept fo turbo timer. dark smoke. i thought dark smoke was oil, not fuel.? when i am at low rpms it drives fine. it doesnt drive bad when boosting, just alot of smoke.

well, if it was spittin out oil or smoke that was oil, then you would have a blown head gasket....more then likely you just need it tuned good.

um, dont quote me on this but i think either Batlground or mainstream do great tuning for like 60 bucks-100 bucks an hour, well worth it tho, just send a message to vteckidd or tracy, they'll hook you up.

well honestly, it shouldn't...its all depending on how many dyno pulls you do too, i believe they dyno then tune then dyno again....you can tell them you want 1 hour of tunning and dyno'n and they will keep it at that.

more than likely its ur turbo dooe. They crap out all the time. If u want to u can take off ur inlet pipe to ur turbo and look for oil. Its smoking out the exhaust but u can ususally see oil in the compressor housing if the seal are leaking.

i hope its the turbo, it wont be too expensive, ill have to get a shop or eebay to hook me up with a gt28rs or somethin.its too hard to tell the underside of the motor is in oil due to a recent valve cover gasket problem.

There is nothing wrong with running rich. I do it. But only because I have way to big of injectors. However the tune I got at BATLGROUND was one of the best tunes on an SR ever.

So get an AFC go to Batlground have Dan tune your sr car.

ok so we've established you have a completely stock SR, which means a sensor went bad somewhere in the system or you've blown something. it's a start.

does the car idle high all the time or does it rev high on startup and then idle down properly when it warms up? if it warms up and idles down like it should, does it run ok before it's completely warmed up?

and the most obvious question is, what color is the smoke actually?

a general guide is black=fuel, blue=oil, white=water/coolant

not completely stock. i said all the things that were posted were stock. i hava a 3-1/2 exhaust/ and downpipe, bov, t28, not t25. greddy oil pan.

before you go and throw on a AFC, you should figure out what the real problem is.. instead of not fixing it and then spending more money to compensate for it. its kind of like having a leaky tire, and instead of fixing it.. just keep putting air in it every day. except this is worse lol


if your 100% sure its fuel, think about it logically:

prolly not o2 sensor, as the o2 sensor isnt used under WOT and you say it rolls black smoke under full throttle

i dont believe the sr uses a map sensor..

i know the sr20 uses a mass air flow.. its possible you have a boost leak after the MAF.. or a bad MAF itself.

fuel pressure.. i would think that if your FPR was bad it would sputter or have other odd problems out of boost, but i suppose its an option

injectors.. not likely but once again a possibility.



personally id check all of your charge piping after the MAF and see if you can find a leak.. especially if you say it doesnt boost strong! in all the turbos going bad ive seen, they usually still boost fine but start burning oil like crazy! id pull your charge pipe off and see if its got massive amounts of oil in it. its ok to see a little residue but if its dripping or sopping wet, youre turbo seals are prolly SOL or your oil return line is restricted..

just some ideas to start with..

well if it wasnt burning alot of fuel before, youve probably still got an issue.. depending on how rich its running it can be detrimental.. IE cylinder wash

and a friendly advice - do NOT get the AFC hack unless you have something else to control the timing with, like a MSD

if it's gonna be a hack, then get EManage - it works perfect for me
