The Fight and Doughnuts In Atlanta

A friend and I are driving down one of the Peachtree's in Atlanta on our way to the Westin so I can try to get to the roof to do another panoramic photo. We come to a red light and notice one hell of a ruckus going on to our left. Two older (probably both in their early-late 30s) african-american dudes are squaring off and circling each other, bouncing around about to really go at it.

One guy looks to be about 6'10 something (really tall and lanky) the other guy was a hell of a lot shorter but a little stockier. After about 5 minutes of squaring off they finally start fighting. I say fighting but it was more like the tall guy holding the little guys head while he uppercut(ed) him over and over again in the head. Meanwhile the little guy isn't stopping and is still swinging away at the big guys calfs and knees, but he's doing one hell of a job pushing the guy into traffic.

The little guy (still at the tall dudes knees) pushes the fight in front of a taxi which quietly comes to a stop to watch the ensuing battle. Meanwhile my buddies talking about getting out of the car to break it up. I didn't think it was a great idea for a teenaged white kid to get out of his BMW in the middle of a raging, fight surround by really angry homeless people, but he's been fighting for years (he used to compete in competitive sparring tournaments, and is a karate teacher and proficient in judo, and some other wild arial shit) so I didn't think to much of it. As he's walking over there the mob breaks up the fight, but the little guy rips off his shirt and starts screaming again. My friend walks back to his car and we watch for a few minutes (we probably sat through 6 red lights) as the two start screaming at each other again.

My friends then looks at me, and says the following "haha dude... are you ready for this...? hold on... I'm about to really lay some drag here." he looks around for any cars (the street was damn near empty) then proceeds into the red lighted intersection. He pushes in the clutch revs the car to red line and proceeds to begin doing doughnuts in the deserted intersection. Upon the second rotation, he shifts hard into second gear and starts boiling the ever living hell out of his rear tires. Boiling the hell out of the BMWs rear Michelin tires, in second gear, in an intersection in downtown Atlanta. He rides out second gear fish-tailing slightly up the street and chirping second as we proceed on our way to the Westin.

Upon looking back at the quickly disagreeing mob, I see that not a single person is interested in fighting any more. Every person standing near the fight, including the fighters themselves is standing rooted to the spot, staring at the BMW.

The logical part of my brain tells me doing that sort of thing in Atlanta is a fast way to spend the night in jail. The less logical part is telling me, "that was awesome."

Either way it sure as hell proved to be a fast way to disarm a volatile situation.

Oh... and on the way back (we had to drive back to look at the marks) the crowd starts whistling and cheering as we drive by.

So if your on the Peachtree street just past Insurrection before the Westin, look at the ground in the intersection and you'll see the remains of some Michelins.
