I have a bare gsr block laying around. should i sleeve it and run more boost? im currently running 18 psi daily on stock sleeves. everything else is built. running on this set up hard daily and its been fine for 3 months now. Just trying to get some opinions from you guys.

18psi on stock sleeves? that's pretty good. what compression? what kinda power you making with that setup? i'm in the middle of building something similar...built head and internals, stock sleeves, 10:1 compression (9.5:1 at the lowest)...but i only wanna make about 300whp or so. i don't plan to run that much boost...
you should probably sleeve for peace of mind if you wanna run more boost, cuz 18psi is getting towards the limits of reliability on a daily driver, i think...

^^he is somewhere in the 400 range

I've just had to try what honda-tech was saying. they say that 400-450 is safe on stock sleeves. PSI has nothing to do with it, its the power you are making. tunning is the key. i just want to see how well it holds up. COmpression test shows 180 across the board. so the motor is holding up very nicely.

yeah...i've read some threads about that on honda-tech and team-integra. you're right still...tuning is the key. if you're making that kind of power reliably on stock sleeves...then i have more power potential in my project than i planned. that's good news :D

honda-tech is wrong. it most certainly IS the PSI you are running that makes it blow up. higher PSI means HIGHER risk of detonation, increased cylinder pressure and cylinder temps, etc.
For instance:
if you are making 400whp at 20psi of boost. you get your head ported , and get a Full race turbo manifold. You are now making 400whp@17psi. same power less boost=more efficient motor.
Now, lets say you turn the boost up from 20psi to 23psi. youu make 420whp. this motor is less efficient than the previous one. Your increasing boost which almost always means "kaboom" if your at the limit.
So ask HT this question, if someone runs 25psi on a b16 motor and makes 300whp vs someone that boosts 18psi and makes 350whp, which motor will last longer. Assume both motors are stock except for rods and pistons. my money is on the 18psi/350whp.
Long story short, Sleeve it for piece of mind, and if you decide to shoot for more power later. otherwise, 400-450whp/20-22psi is safe on stock sleeves, WITH GOOD TUNING.

pay for advertising, this isnt a sales pitch section.
I would use DFE Enterprises, he uses Golden Eagle Machine directly and i use him for all my sleeving. Or you can try Kteller.com who uses AEBS sleeves.

apm in forrest park , im not advertiseing, im trying to hook people up ,let them know of a place thats not out of state, and on that note of advertiseing we r a good machine shop and i would like to let people know, just like u let people know of your place . so stop bs,ing on my replies plez.

ill add my 2 cents in. PSI has very little to do with safety of the sleeves in a physical sense. The pressure your sleeves see under normal combustion is a lot more than the added pressure from your turbo. what usually happens that blows stock sleeves is leaning out, and letting the hot charge from the turbo predetonate. ITS HEAT, and it will split your sleeves. at the track, my stock sleeves see 28 psi everytime i run, it only hits it for a second and drops down to about 26.5 which i dynoed 515whp at 25 psi on my stock sleeves. ive seen as high as 675whp on stock sleeves with a larger turbo running 27 psi. larger turbo means more volume of air. Your sleeves can handle the power, a great deal of it. they just cant handle the predetonation stress, because it gets everything out of the groove and makes shit wanna come apart. Aftermarket sleeves are basically a fallback to errors in tuning that will cause detonation, or racing in the heat. I recommend sleeves even though im not running them, but I will have golden eagle sleeves for next season. :goodjob:

I think I talked with you about 3 weeks ago at the meeting at North Poing Mall ... you said you're making ~380WHP at 18psi with Hondata s100, right ? I'm having the black 95 Civic with a turbo D in there ..
anyways, to your question
everyone knows that detonation kills motors .. so at what power level you can expect to see it with a good tune - well with your B18 build block I think you can go as far as 400 to 450 WHP max at whatever PSI that happens with pump gas. As far as the sleeves are concerned - those can get busted at 6psi, and they can work fine at 26psi .. So as long as you keep the good tune they should be fine. IMO, you are looking at about 22psi for those power goals above.
As I remember you said that you're not tuning your motor by yourself, but make sure your tuner go no more than 11:1 A/F, and go conservative with the timing - that's the most important in the tune

if i was you ill get it sleeved anyways..400 hp is a little crazy for a daily driver knowing half the time your going to run it hard majority of the time...
