~ Introduction ~

Welcome! My name is Mike, and this build thread is about "Nana", my '94 RX-7 with a 2JZ motor swap.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/YoshiFD3S

If you were in the car scene about 10-11 years ago in 2003-ish, you'd have known me as YoshiFC3S because I drove this car:

Before and since then I've owned a multitude of JDM cars including an AE86, 2 other FD's, and a turbo RX-8.

With my 2JZ FD, there's a good 4+ years worth of story before this point, but I feel like the car is close enough to be being done that it warrants a build thread.

So let's start with this!

~ Brief Story ~

So I've been working on this 2JZ swap for about 4 years now. I had previously made 400whp on my rotary setup and I would have stayed rotary, but when I blew a motor and got scammed out of trying to buy a replacement motor, my brother encouraged me to pursue a 2JZ swap which was always a fantasy of mine.

Over the least ~4 years I've had a handful of people work on the car, most of which didn't give a crap about the car and did terrible work. A lot of money has been spent just fixing and repairing their bad work. :(

More recently, I brought the car to the guys at "Speed For Sale" in Alpharetta. They did PHENOMENAL work by not only fixing all the shoddy work done before them, but they've actually implemented some really innovative solutions and upgrade solutions. My particular 2JZ RX-7 has literally "one of a kind" with some of the unique upgrades that have been done at this point.

For example, when most 2JZ-FD savvy folks think of this swap, the first concern is "bumpsteer" and engine height, etc.

For my swap, the guys at Speed for Sale actually moved my steering rack forward to where it is now completely straight. Usually the steering rack sits back a few inches..kind of like this: \____/

Because my steering rack goes straight across now, I shouldn't encounter any "bumpsteer" issues. To my knowledge I am the only known engine-swapped FD to perform this kind of modification, so the steering geometry changes will be interesting. Once the car is running I'll report my feedback.

My entire sub-frame was also hand-fabricated from scratch. It sits very low and as far back as possible. The guys at SFS actually pushed back my firewall some just to allow for even more clearance.

~ Goals ~

I just want to start at ~400whp and "see what breaks from there" as I like to say. I don't want a 700+hp 10-second death-trap. With 400+whp / 350+tq in a ~2,800lb RX-7 chassis, I should be faster than 99% of cars on the road anyways.

Visually, I'm going for what I call a "modernized" FD look. I want to retain the retro flip-up headlights, and simply accentuate the car's existing body lines..not throw on some crazy body kit that makes new body lines.

Next, let's go ahead with my current "mod" list.

~ What's Left ? ~

As of 30APR2014, the main things left are:

1.) Finish up any remaining wiring. Dakota Digital Speedo/Tach adapters, radiator fan temp switch, and a few others.

3.) Finish bolting it all up and fill her up w/ fluids. All major fabrication and plumbing are done.

4.) Test it out! - Fire it up using a baseline tune provided by Speed For Sale.

5.) Tune - I'm going to take it back to Speed For Sale for a full-on dyno tune.

6.) Alignment - Get the full 4-wheel alignment. Adjust coil-overs as necessary.

7.) Test-Drive - See if the stupid thing even drives straight! :D

8.) Enjoy! - There are still a lot of knick-knack items that the car needs. Missing or broken parts, etc....but in the meantime I'll be driving the car to work once or twice a week for fun, and I'll definitely be taking the car to local car meets like Caffeine & Octane. :D

10.) Wide-Body & Paint - When money allows, I plan to re-spray the entire car with a nice pearl white color, including the carbon-fiber. I'll be re-installing my '99 spoiler at that time, as well. I think I'm also going to look into molding the APEXi side-skirts and then putting some FEED-style carbon-fiber side-skirts on top/underneath them. Should look really sharp with the '99 front-lip and the rear-diffuser! :D

I'll be updating this thread as the car finishes up.

Thanks to anyone who is interested in my car and is/has been keeping up with it!

I finally got the first part of my tax return which gave me enough to pay my current balance at Speed For Sale, the shop that's been working on the car for the last ~6 months or so.

Unfortunately, after having already paid the shop ~$12,XXX+ in parts/labor...they still wanted another ~$1,200-$1,500 just to get the car "dyno ready" and I simply don't have it. It's not to say that they haven't done ~$12k+ worth of parts/labor...but I simply don't have any more money right now.

So!..Rather than let the car sit at their shop any longer, I decided that if they only need another $1,200-$1,500 (10-15 hours) of work to get the car running enough to be dyno-tuned...then why can't I just do it myself??

Well, not entirely by myself...my brother is a renowned master mechanic and wiring specialist here in Georgia, and he's offered to help me get it running.

According to SFS, the car just needs a few more wires done and then bolt a few things back on.

When the car arrived yesterday I was admittedly overwhelmed by the boxes of random parts and interior and exterior trim pieces (some broken...grr!)...but the more I looked at it, the more I realize just how close the car really is!

With my brother's help I'm confident we can have it running within the next few weeks. For real.

While he's working on the wiring and other items, I'll be doing some major clean-up and installing/reinstalling parts and pieces including some of miscellaneous parts I've been stock-piling over the last couple months or so... JDM steering wheel, rear-diffuser, etc...

So YEAH!

I'm just happy to have the car HOME. Just the feeling of knowing that the car is at a point now where I can control how soon it gets done, instead of waiting (and paying) someone else to do it....is just so exciting!!

Update: April 30th, 2014

Made my first of MANY trips to my local Autozone last night to pick up some necessary shtuff.

I only have a few hand tools and ratchet sets, so I'm kind of starting from scratch when it comes to actual mechanics tools. lol? -_-;;

https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/v/t1.0-9/q71/s720x720/1911691_10152457374022474_8331692788178776261_n.jp g?oh=d6a8a53428b7a1df554a4f4c65e1611a&oe=53C6BF2E

I also installed the JDM steering wheel that I bought a couple months ago.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/t1.0-9/q79/s720x720/10155598_10152457374067474_5934618253151054180_n.j pg

Freaking Japanese VS. USDM ..things are ALWAYS wired differently and have other distinct differences from our USDM cars. It took me like 2 hours to figure out what little tricks I had to do to get it to bolt on correctly.

I think I wired up the horn correctly, but the freaking airbag wires are THE SAME COLOR!!! How stupid!! So if I end up wiring that backwards and applying battery power, I could have an airbag in my face. So, I left the airbag unwired for now... I'll see if I can find some better info on the wiring..

Next goal: Install my rear-diffuser!

Can't wait to see it installed! :D

Stay tuned for more updates!!

Update: May 4th, 2014

Worked on the car with my brother for about ~6 hours yesterday.

He made some great progress with the wiring and feels confident that we could actually fire up the motor if we can get in another 1-2 productive days of work. There are some plumbing items we need to address like heater hoses and power-steering lines, but that shouldn't take long. Just a bunch of tedious things.

While my brother worked on wiring, I worked on installing the Shine Auto "street" Style rear-diffuser and finally installed what I like to call a "modernized" RX-7 badge. Check it out :D

Gauges wired up:

Unfortunately, I'm going to be out of town for work till May 23rd, so that sucks. Maybe if my brother and I can work on it some more that weekend and the next weekend, it's possible that the car might be ready by June's Caffeine and Octane Meet in Alpharetta. Here's to hoping!

I'm trying to get the fenders pulled and rolled this week, so if that happens I'll be sure to post more pictures.

Stay tuned! :)

So I'm surfing around Shine Auto's site and after seeing this picture...I think I'm in love. @_@

http://www.shineautoproject.com/wp-content/gallery/fd3s-sgen-pro/fd_xt7_mhg_02_800.jpg

The more I look at this picture, the more I like it.

The low-profile rear spoiler..the Feed-style side-skirts...the black/CF front vents..I'm loving this look!

I'm seeing that Shine Auto also sells the front vents in carbon fiber too. ooOOoO! I was already planning to paint mine black because one my vents is yellow right now, since I had to replace it.

http://www.shineautoproject.com/wp-content/gallery/fd3s-fndduct-oem/img_6852-1024x683-640x427.jpg

I'm loving all these black accents on a white FD, though. That was my pretty much my goal all-along. lol

My brother thinks I should get that rear-roof spoiler, but I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

What do you guys think?

Thanks guys!

With some advice from some fellow FD owners, I decided to trim my factory mud-guard flaps and re-install them. I think it was the right decision.

I had Jimmy Diaz AKA "VIP Fender Rolling - ATL" (https://www.facebook.com/VipFenderRolling?ref=br_tf) come by yesterday for a couple hours to do a mild pull and roll on my fenders. Unfortunately my front passenger fender apparently has a big chunk of metal missing that made it impossible to properly roll, so that really sucks. Jimmy did the best he could, though.

I guess I might need to do my widebody kit a little sooner than planned.

The pull is pretty subtle, not like the all-out 45-degree angled "flare" that I am used to seeing when other FD guys do this, but it should be enough to prevent me from rubbing on at least 3 out of 4 fenders. lol..

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e356/YoshiFD3S/BA5729DB-50A2-4085-A968-423182B9E542_zpszvebfa88.jpg (http://s43.photobucket.com/user/YoshiFD3S/media/BA5729DB-50A2-4085-A968-423182B9E542_zpszvebfa88.jpg.html)

Unfortunately, looking at my wheel setup in general made me realize one future concern I have now, which is that when the guys at Speed For Sale moved my steering rack forward, they had to fabricate custom swaybar mounting brackets that is mounted underneath the steering rack and removes a good ~2 inches of ground clearance.

My current ground clearance is now only about ~3.5" which sucks because I was really hoping to lower my car a little bit further. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable having any less than that 3.5" of ground clearance.. :/

Maybe later I'll look into other solutions to modifying the swaybar setup or if I ever go with 19" wheels then that should allow me to lower the coil-overs by another inch or so safely, I think.

Just kind of sucks. :/

Not sure I'll be able to work on the car any more this week, and then I'm out of town until May 23rd, so it might be a few weeks before any other real updates.

Nonetheless, I really appreciate your guys continued interest and support for my build.

Thank you!

Apparently Jimmy D. is/was a fan of my brother and said a lot of the Atlanta community wondered "What happened to 'Z-U-L8R'?"

Well, he's back here in Georgia for good, now. He is currently living in Roswell, right off Hwy 92 by Roswell High School. :)

He is still doing side-work on cars, too. PM me if you wanna get in touch with him.

Shameless plug-in for my brother. haha! ;)

Looking good man. Where did you pick up the diffuser? I've been thinking about one but want to see one in person before I buy.

If I had known the swap would take this long and cost this much, I would have stayed rotary. When I tried to buy a street-ported REW to replace the motor when I blew it, I got scammed out of my money. That's what made me decide to go the different route.

I bought the diffuser off an RX-7 Club member off the forums.

It looks amazing in person and in pictures. I would absolutely recommend it.

Just have to take your time installing it, of course. Measure twice, drill once. lol

Subbing.

Damn, what did speed 4 sale do for $12k?!

Not nearly enough, IMO.

They did some work to my subframe, relocated the swaybar and created new mounts/braces for it, extended the steering column by 2", shortened the tie rods, relocated my FMIC, and fixed some cold-solder breaks in the gauge cluster.

No real time was spent on wiring, though. That's really all that's left now.

I've been out of town and super busy a lot lately...but 2 weeks ago my brother and I worked on the car for several hours and made a ton of progress. The car cranks now. We just need to figure out some ignition wiring stuff.

Here are some fresh pics of the car I took recently. It's really starting to come together, I tell ya! :D

:D

On the side, I'm trying to paint the little side vents black right now too, but it didn't turn out the way I had hoped the first run. >_< Gonna try again, though.

Anyways...

The car is damn near able to run. Just gotta figure out what last few tires need to be done. I received a baseline tune from Speed For Sale which should be configured properly for my unique NA-T setup.

Soon, I tell ya!

Update: July 11th, 2014

So I've been out of town a lot lately for work and vacation, but my brother and I made some great progress on the car a couple weeks ago.

It cranks now, and I've got a baseline tune to work with for the AEM, but we're not getting signals at the injectors or coil-packs.

My brother will be coming over again this weekend to help make more progress on the wiring.

In the meantime as a little side project, I decided to paint my little side vents black. :P

The first time I messed up in how I applied the clear coat, so I had to sand down like 5 layers of paint and primer and start over. >_<!! lol

Not bad for rattle-can, I think! :P

It's just temporary till I eventually buy the Shine Auto carbon-fiber ones. I had to replace one of my vents and it was already painted yellow, so I HAD to do something...I think the black looks pretty good, though! :D

Just trying to keep myself busy with little stuff during the week, you know.

I have a good feeling THIS could be the weekend she finally starts up, though!

^.^!!!

Update: August 5th, 2014....A day which will live in infamy!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywB_iomorRY

"IT LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S ALIIIIVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

LOL...

So first, we tackled the issue of getting cam and crank count signals to the AEM software. The primary culprits were a bad ground on the 7M-CPS wiring and the CPS itself needed to be adjusted internally to tighten the gaps, which was why I wasn't getting "crank count" signals before that.

From there, the "Stat Sync'd" signal in the AEM software wouldn't stay "ON". Turns out some of the igniter wires were wired incorrectly by Chase Bays which was causing a back-feed of signal or sorts. With the AEM software, once you have stable cam and crank signals, the "Stat Sync'd ON" is what then allows the injectors and coil-packs to fire.

From there, it was just a matter of getting the right tune loaded into the software.

Since my wiring harness, coil-packs, igniter, and ECU are all 2JZ-GTE...I ended up having to go with one of the 2JZ-GTE specific tunes that is provided by AEM when you install their AEM Tuner software.

For reference, out of the two Supra they provide, the one that worked called "6100 Supra MT 3.5 Bar MAP.02v02".

None of the wacky 2JZ-GE NA-T tunes or 7M-CPS specific settings I've been reading on the forums worked. It had to all be 2JZ-GTE specific.

Once the car started I could rev it gently but it wouldn't hold an idle, so I tweaked the Q45 throttle-body a bit and that was all she needed!! Next step is to set the timing.

So right now I'm asking Jared @ Speed For Sale to provide me a tune that's a little more specific to my setup that I can at least drive the car on. The first place I'll be driving it to is to get a 4-wheel alignment. lol...after that, I'll be bringing it to Speed For Sale for a full-on dyno tune. That's the plan, at least... lol

Over the next couple weeks my brother and I will be focusing on wiring up other components like the gauges, etc., and doing some final plumbing. From there it's just a matter of cleaning it all up, tucking wires, etc. Lots of smaller knick-knack items and parts runs, you know how it goes.. lol

So yeah...SHARE IN MY GLORY!!!!!!!!! lol :P

More to come!

Hadn't updated the thread in a while.

I've been super busy on the car lately, though!

I had to purchase a replacement R154 because it turned out 1st and 2nd gear were bad in the tranny I bought a few years ago. That sucked.

Here's an update engine bay shot:

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e356/YoshiFD3S/A5065BEF-59BC-44A3-AB03-3E46BA4A5275_zps8fxo0utm.jpg

I ended up having to sell the Rays Gramlight wheels to help pay for my upcoming 5-year vow renewal for my wife and I.

Lucky for me, I have an awesome boss who just so happens to have a spare set of track RPF1's with 275/35/18 Toyo R888's that he hasn't used in a long time.

The tread is worn even for R888's which start with really low tread, so they're not particularly safe for long-term use, but at least for getting a tune a few drives to/from work or maybe a Caffeine and Octane or two...they'll be fine.

Here's a pic of the FD as she sits right now in the garage after I spent about 10 hours last weekend tweaking my front-bumper to fit just right. :]

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e356/YoshiFD3S/6CC83907-AA48-44ED-ADDF-4BD9426B270F_zpsfcwzflgn.jpg

Since I'm sure everyone is curious at this point....Yes, the car does run AND drive now.

Here's a nice video of me in my neighborhood. She's untuned and sputtering like a herpa-derp, so I gotta be gentle. lol

YoshiFD3S - 2JZ RX-7 Drive Around! (Un-tuned) - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLkLOMY-_Ak)

My wife is awesome, isn't she? lol

My wife's comments about "Not on those wheels" is because of the Toyo R888 tires being uber sticky tires that I couldn't drift on even if I was stupid enough to try. lolol xD

So yeah!

Over these next couple weeks I'll be working primarily on wiring. Speedo, tach, that kinda stuff.

There's really not much else to do.

I need an oil-catch can, coolant overflow reservoir, and a turbo blanket...that's about it parts-wise.

Everything else is just a matter of me cleaning things up. Adding some more grounding wires, cleaning up the wiring in general, etc.

You guys will probably see me on the roads some time in January or February!

Look for me on Highway 92 in the Woodstock/Roswell area!

hahaha

:D

Depending on how some financial things turn out in the next month or so I may be able to get her back on the road.

With that said, it was a nice day outside yesterday (except for the ridiculously high pollen count here in Georgia)...so I decided to take some new pictures of Nana alongside Jun-chan, my daily-driver 300+whp Sonata. :D

Enjoy!

- Dual-tip exhaust with rear-diffusers on both....love it! :D

So yeah, shouldn't be too much longer till she's back on the road. $2k outta cover another AEM V2 and the full tuning session at Speed For Sale. Hopefully I get a decent-sized tax return! lol...I'm still waiting for my CPA to finish processing it.
