He will do the same thing he did with the "red line" in Syria. He will fold.

He really doesnt have a choice but to fold though. Hagel has already stated Obama's plan to reduce military manpower back to pre WW2 levels. He has also come out and said we will no longer enjoy a military dominance under his leadership.

On a side note, I could actually go along with what Obama was doing if the cuts were left unspent and used to reduce deficits and debt. Its not though, he just plans on spending that money on expanded handout programs and "infrastructure" projects.

Shit's getting serious now. A 90 minute phone call. Putin must be hiding in his basement in complete fear and terror after that.

If this continues to escalate at this pace Putin will receive a iPod filled with Obama's greatest speeches by the end of the week.

They can meet in Paris when Hollande hands over the keys to the city.

What is really funny to me though is that this is as much a sign of European politics as anything else. Russia doesnt fear European militaries because the Euros have leaned so heavily on the US for their defense for decades. Instead of spending appropriate money on their own defense, they spent it on domestic programs.

SMH... The President does not know how to win a hand when it comes to bluffing. Don't make threats when countries know you're decreasing military spending and they know you have no desire to start any new wars.

The President should not make empty threats, but instead let his actions speak. The fact that he is not willing to get the military involved is the only reason I voted for him in 08. It’s time for the U.S. to stop sacrificing our Men and Women and our Wealth on conflicts around the world. We have spent around 4 trillion dollars on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Just imagine if that money was spent on infrastructures, education, science and grants for new businesses here in the U.S.

You cannot go starting any mess in Russia's backyard and not expect there to be serious consequences. Remember we have the NATO missile defense system and Russia does not have too many allies like the old days. I wouldn't want to start any hostilities so close to their borders. You can only back a dog so far in to a corner before it has no choice but to bite first.

We tried isolationism before and we still ended up in WW2. I don't really disagree with you though. War has become less about the military and more about the politicians. Where has that gotten us? Vietnam, first gulf war, Iraq war, asscrackistan, and hearts and minds over violence and firepower.

On the other side of the coin, how many more times can we be punked before someone takes a shot at us?

Lasty, Obama already ditched the missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic to appease Putin.

To me Isolationism would be better for us and the world. I am against globalization, as I believe there will all ways be winners and losers in the world no matter what. It is not our job to make those selections in the world, and no where in the Constitution does it say that we have a responsibility to the rest of the world. I feel war should be saved until you're willing to do the unimaginable in order to win, and I think if more people felt that way then there would be a lot less wars the U.S. would be so willing to jump in to.

Policies changes whenever someone new is elected in this country, and meddling in other countries affairs is a long term commitment that must be adhered to by future policy makers. I only support these endless wars if we were imperialistic (Financial benefited), but we're not since that does not match our values.

Yes we still ended up in WW2 but at least we came out ahead in both wars. We wouldn't be the richest nation if it wasn't for the fact that we stayed on the sidelines and sold weapons and goods to the rest of the world that was at war.

We wouldn't be the richest nation if it wasn't for the fact that we stayed on the sidelines and sold weapons and goods to the rest of the world that was at war.

WW2 had very little to do with the wealth that US citizens have amassed since the 1929 crash. That wealth came from the flood of innovation that took place. It came from a rise in standard of living the world has never seen before. Most importantly though, it came from a strong work ethic among the middle class. Yes, there were some major contractors that made out huge during the war, but that was a small group.

In the 20 years after the end of WW2 you had 3 major sectors of the economy come into their own. First you had commercial avaition, which was limited to only the wealthy before the war. Second, you had the massive growth in private vehicles. This created huge employment gains in manufacturing and all of the associated fields. Third was the interstate program started after the Korean War under Eisenhower.

The ripple effect of growth in those sectors combined with the shortage of manpower caused by casualties during the wars lead to high wages and low unemployment. The men coming back into the work force were very skilled and very resourceful, which only added to the profits of their employers and in turn, increased growth.

What were we talking about again?

I agree with all of that except the part where you said WW2 had little to do with us amassing so much wealth.
We dominated manufacturing (Our bread and butter) after WW2 since most of Europe and its factories were in ruins. Yes the automobiles helped spurn the growth of the middle class, but American manufactures benefited from the lack of competitions which in large part was due to the lack of factories and man power around the world. I agree with the strong work ethic, but we have always had a strong work ethic. We still do if you look at U.S. workers productivity numbers and yes innovation has helped those number.

We were talking about the Next great war. Every year it is something, I still can't believe those idiots in Washington voted for the IRAQ war. Most of the Country knew that war was bullshit, but Iraq was a pawn in the middle East that kept it in balance. If Iran every got close to a nuke, Saddam would have invaded and if we provided support we could have toppled Iran. However I would not want to eliminate Iran, since they also served a purpose in keeping Iraq and Saudi Arabia in check.

This is why I don't believe we need to go around and meddle in other countries affairs. The World will always have their conflicts, and we should just watch from a far until we suspect it is a danger to our national security (No more treaties with smaller nations).

Exactly. As long as no NATO nations are directly threatened we need to leave this alone and let Europe deal with it. The world complains about the US getting involved in everything, its time we sat out a while and let the world rethink their stance.

The only reason Putin is stopping now is the create a new normal, just like he did with Georgia. As soon as the world takes the current situation as normal, Ukraine can kiss the rest of the Easter half of their country good bye. If you ever seen the Christian movie Megiddo: The Omega Code 2 you see the Apocalypse is rained in by Russia and Middle eastern country like Syria fighting NATO and United states.
I was bored one night and actually watched the movie and it wasnt all that bad but now all i think of is it with current events.
Russia has shown it is scared of sanctions from crying threats once it was mentioned. Yes they could be but hurt if the US did it but cant afford for the EU to and that scares them.

BanginJimmy
03-08-2014, 10:00 AM
The issue with sanctions is that if they are too weak, they do nothing. If hey are too strict, they could be a catalyst for full scale war.

A VERY simplified history lesson. Before WW2, Japan wanted to keep the US out of the war in the Pacific. It wasnt until we fully cut them off from steel shipments that they saw us as taking sides and as a possible aggressor. At that point, they decided to act first. We all know what happened after that.

In the case of Russia, too strict of sanctions could easily give Putin the leverage he needs to move west, all the way to Poland, or Germany if he wants to. I dont think NATO could do anything more than give him a bloody nose at this point either.

Side note: If the US gets too involved in a war n a buildup in Europe, Taiwan will likely come under attack from China. S. Korea will likely be attacked by the North. You can expect Al Queda to step up attacks all over the middle East. Iran will likely put their strength into an attack on Israel.

Those of you that hate US involvement overseas, this is just a small idea of how many regions stay pretty much peaceful only because of a US presence. Like it or hate it, the US is a stabilizing force wherever it goes, even in areas it is waging war.

So lets see Russia has pissed off everyone but the Muslim world oh wait....Never mind
Tatar Sunni Muslims pose a threat to Russia's occupation of Crimea | World news | theguardian.com (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/05/tartar-ukraine-sunni-muslims-threat-russian-rule-crimea)
Muslims oppose anyone occupying any space. Islam in a man is like rabies in a dog.

I guess that helps me to understand the community organizer's interest in the ukraine. He must be hoping for the islam disease to spread there. He also gets to sanction a major energy supplier. The dreams of his father..

I have never seen a mid-level goon openly mock our President before... And on Twitter no less.

This was the kindest version of the story to our dear El Presidente I could find.
Russian Deputy PM Laughs at Obama’s Sanctions - ABC News (http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2014/03/russian-deputy-pm-laughs-at-obamas-sanctions/)

On the upside Obama has indeed "reset relations" with the Russians just as he promised. Check that one off the list.

In my eyes things are about to take a quick turn for the worst with EU adopting the UK. I know watching from history that Russia has all the influence and eyes on Ukraine and have said they will NEVER allow a western intervention. The EU has wanted UK to join its region of power since the late 90's and Russia has threaten already war if this happens. Also in the News is Poland wanting a faster measure from the United States to build the Self deffense sites in its country. We all know what Russia has said would happen it these are built and it had the word ICBM involved.

This whole thing is really degrading fast. You can also add the new maneuvers Russia is running along the border with Estonia. They claim to fear for the Russian nationals there now.

The similarities between Russia's actions now and those of Germany in the run up to WW2 are amazing.

Put yourself in Putin's shoes...

Who in this world is going to stop you?

France? Nope.

Great Britain? Love the Brits but no

Switzerland? Hahahahahaha

Spain? Hell no

United States? Bitch please, we can't even fix a website. How are we going to take on an entire country? Even if we weren't 17 trillion dollars in debt and could afford another war, President limp-wrist doesn't have the balls.

China? No. We should be worried that China doesn't take Putin up on his 2008 offer to collaborate and collapse our economy. Because that would take all of three days and never waste a bullet.

Iran? They want the 12 Imam, they ain't stopping shit even if they could.

Israel? They got enough problems on their own. Plus Obama and his administration hasn't exactly been friendly to them. Hell our beloved John Kerry's source of wealth (that he married into) is behind a boycott of Israel... While he is our Secretary of State.

Mexico? There are no tortillas or free government services for illegals in Ukraine. No care.

Canada? They might be the world's last best hope.

Did you say the same thing when Georgia was invaded?

How about when he does the same thing in Estonia?

You are right in the fact that most of Crimea wants to be part of Russia and the ballot probably would have shown that before Russian forces went in. That doesnt give any further legitimacy to the vote AFTER they went in though.

A separate point.

Obama has had a pretty easy presidency to this point with very few non self inflicted crisis. This one changes all that. As rough as Bush's presidency was, this single crisis could easily trump everything Bush had to go through. Hell, this could be the diciest foreign relations situation since WW2, and if handled badly by any of a dozen govts or millions of citizens it could easily spark WW3, or at least another European war.

Obama can get a pass because it's Ukraine. As sad as that is to say.

Estonia, is a member of NATO... And another matter entirely. I know there is this "OMG let's get Ukraine into NATO" push. But that's just pillow talk for Ukraine to get used to their new Russian mail-order bride.

He hasnt made the big blunder yet, and I agree, Ukraine is not a NATO member and therefore not nearly as significant as Estonia which has been a NATO member since 2004.

As I said though, it wont take much for this entire powder keg to go up. The wrong Ukrainian soldier getting pushed too far. The Russians taking over a base getting a little too rough. The possibilities really are endless.

Leftist in the united states want a racial cleanse too, theyre just more discreet with thier approach. Well.... some of them are discreet

Its all hilarious to me. The funniest part of it alll is how a government as revolting as ours still feels morally superior enough to police the world.

“I think that the message is, no matter what the world may do to you unfairly, no matter how you’re crucified - nailed to the cross at home, or in your personal relationships, or on the job - that you can rise if you don’t lose yourself during the hard times and the challenges.

The story of Jesus on the cross. No matter what they humiliated him with. No matter how they mocked him he took it, because he knew he could rise. And the story of Easter and my message for this Easter session is no matter what unearned suffering you go through, that if you know you can rise above it, don’t become like the diseases that you fight.

As I looked at President Obama at our convention last Friday, where all he took he’s been able to rise politically again. I’m not comparing him to Jesus, but I am saying that to every crucifixion there is a resurrection for those who believe.” ...
