View Full Version : General Chat Cant decide on a new mud toy, input needed.

Last time i did one of these polls, the options were a pathfinder, samurai and Raider. The people picked the samurai, i ignored them and got the pathfinder... which wasnt a horrible decision, my pathfinder turned out great and i had a lot of fun with it.... but in hindsight, the samurai was probably the right decision.....
So now it's time for another mud toy and again, i cant make up my mind and would like the people's opinion.
The options......

CJ is cool but it has a shitty drivetrain.
Sammy's are great but only with yota axles
YJ is good, make sure to do the vaccum 4wd bypass
Good luck finding a scout that's worth a shit
Fuck the K5....too big
Stick with a Jeep man.

The cjs i'm looking at are all chevy powered, so that erases the drivetrain issue....
So far i'm leaning towards a Jeep or a K5
especially if i was lucky enough to find a 70s model

"mud toy" is just a generic phrase for 4x4, i dont really go mudding... if there's mud, there's mud... but i dont go looking for it. I trail ride and drive to fishing/hunting/camping spots and encounter some mud along the way.
The 4 runner is something i looked at, but in the end, i just dont really care for how they look.

Are the YJs as "rugged" as a CJ? newer jeeps scare me.... i've seen so many random cluster fuck electrical problems with newer jeeps. I want something that can get rained in, get wet and dirty and not have to worry about walking home.

YJ is rugged as hell. It's the same as a CJ but has a longer wheel base, wider(safer), and the same electrical problems as a CJ.
I have never had carpet in any of my jeeps and driven in the rain with no top or doors. Jeeps are not about creature comforts. It's about no top, no doors, and waving to other jeeps. Also every douche bag guy in a minivan or compact wants to be you.

K5s are cool but they are so big and and suck gas like a motherfucker. Have you priced replacement 40's? Not fun.
If you do it, check the driveshaft ujoints and axle seals(pretty much standard for any rig that has been in mud).

When the time came to replace the 40s, id probably remove the lift and go with a normal sized tire. I prefer the smaller tire trucks myself. That K5 looks cool, but nothing something id spend a lot of money to make that way or keep that way.
My ideal truck looks something like this... tire wise... i like the skinnier offroad tires, i dont see a need for the big ass wide monsters...

I had a '75 K5, 7 inches of lift 38" super-swampers. Loved that damn thing, except for the fact you need 4 grown men to remove the top. One day after several beers (and a sawzall) we fixed that factory defect. Cut it behind the drivers seat, threw the back half away. Had a tonneau cover from a marine boat cover complete with chevy bowtie shaped plastic rear window.
Unfortunately it wouldn't fit on any rental car trailer when I moved to Arizona. So I "sold" it to a (would be) friend of mine who never finished paying me for it.

You get any articulation and those tires are going to be eating sheet metal. That being said, drive it until it needs new tires and then downsize to something a little more practical/usable.

If you ever plan on riding with someone else it's a must to have a CB. You don't have recovery gear from what I can see and getting stuck by yourself all the time is a bitch.

Why you gotta crush my dreams?
I've always loved the way land rovers look, but i wouldnt trade a good pair of shoes for a used land rover. Theyre probably the most worthless vehicles ever made. It's a toss up between the rover and the grand cherokee for worst vehicle of all time.
The top cost over $4k, so i know i'm never gonna buy that...... i stumbled across it looking for pull behind campers, that's what i'm really shopping for. Something like a teardrop that is off road worthy.

I have a '99 grand Cherokee in the garage...
Who's crushing who's dreams now?
The off road campers are so badass and worth their weight in gold!

Well damn..... a JGC and a starion.... dont worry, if the zombie invasion ever happens i'll come pick you up. I'll provide the get away vehicle and the arsenal of weaponry, you bring the garden fresh veggies, we'll swing by and get Echo for the BBQ grill and his infinite wisdom that we'll need to continue surviving.
