So I recently got a 97' Wrangler and was wondering whats the difference between these two gears and where is the proper place to use them? Also do I shift into them while I am driving or should I come into a complete stop and then shift? Its a 5 speed and want to up this muddy hill to get it try and help is appreciated thanks in advance:)

4hi is for riding down a gravel road and going over 25 mph in 4wd(loose dirt or ice only)

4lo changes the gearing in your transmission as well as engaging the front axle. Do not go over 25 mph and only use for climbing or getting unstuck. If i am on the trails i use 4lo the whole time and creep. If you re going down a steep hill and want to save your brakes, drop it into 1-2 while 4lo is engaged and your tranny will do the braking for you and "walk" you down the hill.

Always come to a complete stop, put jeep in neutral, shift into/out of 4wd, put jeep back in gear and drive. Neer use 4wd on pavement unless its icy and you are going slow.

Sell me the jeep when you realize you are in over yer head. Been wanting another wrangler.

not to be rude,,, but by the time it took you to make this thread you could have goggled it and got a real in depth answer...but since I'm already here. 4l is for slow speeds: pulling, sand, mud, steep hills, rock crawling. 4h is for driving at a higher rate of speed,, like if its snowing and your driving down the road at 45mph.

it's not a jeep thing............................................. .............. it's an anything 4wd thing. There's thing that men are just suppose to know. This is one of them.

C230k, are you watching the Pats/Ravens game right now or the Emmys?

The only time I watch football is when the Falcons or GA are playing. I see what your saying, but you have to realize I live near the city of atlanta. There is no place here to go off road and driving a 4wd car isnt exactly ideal here on the freeways and this wrangler on mickey thompson wheels arent great on mpg, so there you go.
