Has music lost it's intrinsic genuiness?

What am asking is has electronic music and sounds along with there merger with pop killed the aspirations of potential future talent of becoming true artists. To be fair I love techno, other electronic music and I'm not going to pretend that I don't enjoy some pop music of all genres. Really most any genre sans country for that matter. What I am asking is, am I going to have to look to at least the early 90s to find individuals that posses not only charisma and showmanship but also real vocal skills and proficiency with an instrument?

Nope. You don't have to go back to the 1990s. You need to go about another decade further back to find that last of the talented.

Echo- not exactly what I had in mind but I appreciate those links, good stuff. I was more referring to individuals that would be considered "masters" of their art, that would inspire young talent to follow in their footsteps, occasionally, blazing a new trail pushing their respective genre forward.

Its not that these people don't exist anymore, it's just that they been forced underground buy new music trends. I was in a pretty serious band for a couple of years and while I don't claim to be a visionary, I do claim to be a victim of the times. After shows we would always have a couple of people come up and tell us how awesome our set was, or how glad they were to finally see someone in the local scene doing our style of music.

If you add that "couple of people" up over the entire United States that could be a pretty good following, but we could only afford to do it locally since it was out of pocket, so eventually it just didn't make sense to keep going.

People don't go to local shows anymore. When we decided to call it quits and posted it on myspace we had a bunch of comments like "I'm really sad to see you guys go", "you were my favorite local band", "I really wanted to see you guys make it" and so on. Which left me thinking, "well then where the hell were you guys when we were actually going?".

I think in the end it's just that the older styles have become considered niche. So you just don't see them at the forefront of online music services like iTunes, spotify and so on. Even if you get your music out there digitally it's still so hard to reach your audience if you're not in a currently trending genre.

But as far as current talent, I can't tell you how many times I've stumbled across a young musician on YouTube and thought "holy shit that kid is talented". Whereas 10-20 years ago people would eaten that up, today it just goes unnoticed.

In a currently unpopular genre... noone can hear you scream.

Edit: I don't mean for this to come off as a sob story... my band probably sucked. Just kind of a real life example as to why talent shifted in the music industry based upon trends.

Yep you will have to look harder to find it, only because unfortunately you are a minority now- as vocal and instrument skills aren't a requirement to make $$ anymore.

But I guess at the same time, it's much easier for those people to become found... but would they want to be if the profit motive is gone?

There is more talent now then ever before on all Genre's. Problem is, you get Older, your music taste dosnt really change with time. I'm a huge music fan and listen to everything from the 60's to the new stuff..

I think hip-hop/rap music has lost a lot of it's genius, other genres continue to have a great amount of substance while rap is steadily in decline. I guess it's supply and demand, people are buying dumb shit with a beat so people are making dumb shit with a beat.

No sir, Julizzle. Today's "talent" can't get by on just vocals alone without having to have some auto-tune crap to help it along. Especially in rap and pop music. Aside from songs scattered here and there from the previous million decades of music, pretty much everyone was damn near on point. I was flipping channels the other night and stopped on X-Factor when Britanny Spears sang "Happy Birthday" to LA Reid and it was completely horrible. Creativity is a big part of talent and it does lack in today's music.

I know i'm going to flamed for this because a lot of people like to hate on them......... but the most talented rock band of the modern generation is Linkin Park....... prior to seeing them live, i figured they would suck live because their music sounds so altered on the radio, well... that isnt that case, they sound better live than they do on CDs. Hybrid Theory is one of the best albums of all time, especially if you look at the time period it came out.

Well, Joe Satriani would be and example of someone that I was referring to in my earlier post. Someone that's a master of their craft with an intrinsic value, a high level of talent, and an execution that inspires another generation to do like he has.

Joe & Joe especially are MASTERS of their trade, and theres not a soul on earth who can question their talent and musical ability. They are truly world class. I'd be curious what musicians from the 80s you feel can top their musical talent. (and yes i know that Satriani was PLAYING in the 80s)

Not knocking on LP, i do like some of their music a great deal. But I dont see how you can give them a pass compared to Satch.

I think what we're lacking here is perimeters and guidelines for what would be considered genius in music. It cant simply be "what i like and dislike". I like some songs that are very simple and lacking any substance at all, usually those 5 word songs with a looping beat are the ones the radio loves to play. Some songs you have to listen to a few times to understand and you like them more the more you listen to them.

Things like substance, degree of difficulty, range, was it trend setting or before its time?, longevity, ability to evolve ect.....

with that said..... i thought everything you posted was quality.
