I've posted this on other forums so pardon me if you already saw this somewhere else.. However, I'll shorten things and post just pics of what's been happening since Nov. last year.

To start.. the car.. I found a guy selling a 93 VR touring FD in New Orleans. Luckily it was just a shell but didn't have a title. Seller said, it had a clean title but does not have it because the guy he bought it from never sent it. Luckily through my rotary car connections, I was able to contact the previous seller, and then the seller before that to get a clean viable title.

Here are some pics of the car when I was picking it up from New Orleans.

From there car went to my friend and fabricator Walker Morgan @ Morgan Performance Fabrication (http://www.MPFab.com)

At MPFab, we installed the engine in so walker can develop a new manifold for the car.

The 20B/ 3 Rotor Engine...

Here is when it was just built.

Its from the last year Eunos Cosmo 3 Rotor, "D" series motor, broken down and rebuilt with ported intake, less restrictive 13B-REW exhaust sleeves, Balanced rotating assemblies, Lapped housings, and all new seals and gaskets... And built by one of the best builder I know.. Luis Canizales.

I was initially going to use my previous 3 rotor manifold I had but my friend Walker Morgan convinced me to do something different...

Old manifold

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/20Bstuff4.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/20Bstuff3.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/20Bstuff2.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/20Bstuff1.jpg

And went with 321 SS (which wasn't cheap) and went with something different... here are some pics of Walker's art work (Morgan Performance Fabrication (http://www.MPFab.com))

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/manifold2.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/manifold1.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/manifold3.jpg

A brushed 321... equal length, bottom mount turbo (first I've seen on a 3 rotor).

One of the issues later we found was that the motor mounting kit I purchased wasn't made that well and the engine did not sit flat. It took us a half day with 3 guys trying to make things sit flat before moving farther along..

Because I was using a stainless goodies, I had to get the flange cut perfectly flat before all the tubings got welded by Walker @ MPFab.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/20bflange1-1.jpg

If flange is not flat and tubings are not welded correctly, the heat this engine will produce will warp the flange and will have a leak.

Here are some pics of the DP, turbo flange, heat shields, etc that MPFab.com made. The welding skill is one of the best in the country!!

We decided to go with Bell Intercooler cores for our cooling needs. Bell Intercooler guys have been awesome to work with and shipped the parts ASAP to us.
Walker have used their product in many of his high horse power cars he had build in the past and that was good enough for me to buy Bell products.

Thanks to my oldest sponsor Exedy Clutch, they sent me their lighten twin disc clutch!
Exedy USA has been the best company I have ever worked with and I really appreciate their constant support!! Thanks Exedy!! EXEDY Globalparts Corporation (http://www.ExedyUSA.com)

If you don't know about Exedy Clutch, they are OE manufacture for almost all Japanese cars. They also produce many great racing clutches. Quality and their quality control is far superior than any other companies out there.

Here is something rare for the car..

Defi Super Sport Cluster.. very few in usa and I should be one of the first to put this in an FD here in USA.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/DSSC6.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/DSSC4.jpg

I been wanting to get this for about 8 yeears and Defi never sold this here and never sold this off the shelf in Japan. It was specific Dealer only unit in Japan where it had to be installed in a car by the authorized installer in Japan. All the ones that are here in USA were used units and this is a brand new unit.

The amount of attention to detail that is going into this car is unbelievable. Phil has never taken shortcuts on any of his cars, and this build just reinforces that. Cannot wait to see this one finished good sir.

I wouldnt have minded seeing 1 shortcut, but this is a fantastic build. I've been drooling over it since it was posted.

Here is something new for the 20B that I'm debuting..

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/photo90.jpg

ITs the new Xcessive Engineering lower intake manifold for the 20B. This is made for those interested in doing 3 rotor swap on RX7s, by lowering the height of the manifold and also each runner has an individual injector port. By using this, I'll be running 6x ID2000s on this manifold and 3x ID1000s on primaries on the irons. This much fuel, I'll be good for E85, 1000+WHP.... but shooting for 700-800 ish WHP.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/20BXcessive1.jpg

I also studded the LIM and cut various FD hardwares to get this studded look with chrome hardwares. Also, better view of the LIM with UIM.

LOL! Not sure if you are insulting me or appraising me.. In my excuse, I have spend years trying to collect these parts and if you had the money to source them now, I think you will see that some parts you see here, you would still have to take time sourcing out. Also, I am doing as much stuff myself as I can and been into these cars for over a decade and sourcing parts and planning for 7+. I'm sure anyone who had build cars in the past will know, not everything can be done all yourself... And I'm also networking to make sure its done right. I do agree that sometimes its more appreciative to build everything yourself and not money thrown in. But I assure you, I do know my stuff and this isn't something where money is thrown in and I been sitting aside watching someone build it.

No, not insulting by any means, just my humble opinion my friend, anyways it is a superb built, and i guess yes, some parts you got there, no matter if you are loaded sourced em to get em is almost impossible,

Keep going with it and show a lot of pictures.

I will say I am very lucky. As this unit was never sold to an individual in a box in Japan. All the unit sold in Japan had to be installed in a car and hence never sold out of the box. I've tried to source this unit for years. Again, stuff like this is when I say its not all about the money and also fun part of building cars. I think some think its about making things by yourself but there is no way you can.. if so, I guess we all need to be a renaissance man and have unlimited time and money to make parts..

dragoncelica
09-11-2012, 10:31 AM
It is all depends the way you look at it my friend and also the kind of buildup you are doing have to do with it to, but yes, the fun part sometimes is the search for those key components that set apart a buildup, and make it different,

In my Dodge Dart project i am fabricating all by myself in my carport, making all the modifications to the chassis and building the engine with a combo of my own recipe, yes buying some good stuff here and there, finding some hard to find not available parts also,

I think is all about the kind of built we choose to deal with, just my honest opinion!

I'm going to try to share my experience over the past 2-3 weeks of putting the car together to, journey across the USA to SEMA Las Vegas, to Journey back.

I'll try to go through the journey over next 2-3 days.. And I promise you guys, there will be ton of pics :)

To start, I was waiting for my paint and body guys Jonathan Goolsby and his crew to paint the body so I could start working on the car.

Paint we've chosen was BASF Mercedes AMG Imola Grey Metallic with hint of darker tint.

Here is a picture of the car before and after the shell was painted.

Anyhow, 3 day trip to Vegas, we saw several of these..

At SEMA update...

Sorry for the lack of update.. I'm going to share my experience at SEMA.

Well, as you guys have read, I have put the car together in 6 out of 8 days after chasis was painted. Due to lack of time, car is a roller... which made it very difficult at SEMA.

First, we couldn't unload the car until we were placed at a certain location to unload. We waited over 2 hours between central and south hall, waiting someone for us to goto a specific location to unload.

Finally after 2 hours, we were moved to front of central to unload the car.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/SEMA%202012/SEMA_2012_FD3S_Vegas_Strip09.jpg

From here, they couldn't figure out where I was suppose to park. We now waited another 2 hours til someone figured out where I needed to park.. which was front of North Hall.. a good 1/4 mile away from where we drop the car off, through the central hall, to North hall.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/SEMA%202012/SEMA_2012_FD3S_Vegas_Strip10.jpg
Waiting to be moved.. again..
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/at_SEMA_3.jpg

While waiting, Enjuku Racing posted this photo on their facebook page... First photo to be leaked with all the panels on..

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/135820_420070788048325_416037867_o.jpg

And finally made it to my spot... and before decals got on.

Today, I swapped out the Volks with R888s to more streetable wheel/tires. Tires are Toyo T1-Sport wrapped around BBS MonoForged wheels. I am a fan or older Toyo T1S and T1R and was told the new T1-Sports are quiet, grippy, and responsive. Which after driving around today for over an hour through back country roads, highway pulls, sitting on traffic :), I like the T1-Sport.

Recently purchased the rare RE-Amemiya Carbon Fiber sideview mirrors..

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/F55DBEDE-B090-4080-9B76-6C2949CEB8D9-3201-000001FE677C0C6E_zps8229d908.jpg

Took the old APR mirrors off, made a small carbon base to cover up the old stock mirror mount area, and installed the new mirrors.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/7CA11175-D39A-4C6D-A067-8484F3997A33-3201-000001FE77176946_zpsddf50ac0.jpg

Afterwards, I realized the old bolts from APR were kind of old and had the used look. So, used some left over fender washer and bolts (from CR3 Motorsports) which worked out perfect!

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/343C9984-8092-479B-8733-F739E3DCAF13-3201-000001FE9C72C3CF_zps0609edad.jpg

I've also took my old vinyl out and trying out the Plasti Dip stuff on my lower half of my fenders to see if it helps protect the paint..

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/D51DC9EA-EF58-4EC5-AC39-263B6ACAEEF1-3201-000001DD26AE00A7_zps5823173a.jpg

I've also blacked out the emblem using the plasti dip..

Ok.. Finally after some researching the Plasti Dip and trying some cans, I've decided to get the Pro Car kit from www.DipYourCar.com and finally paint the whole car..

But, Day before dipping the car, took all the aero off and did a track day :)

Thank you!

Now I had the matte black finish for a week and put some miles on the car.

Here is what I like about the finish.

-No more polishing and waxing the car :)
-Wiping the car with just water to clean
-protects my original paint
-easy to re-do
-costs $200 to re do.

Here are some more pics over the past 10 days..

Sorry Phil but I'm not feeling the plastidip. I could understand if this car was in need of a respray but it's not.

I understand. My reason is because I been looking at the same color for the past 10+ years and also I'm starting to track the car more. This was a win win product as I can protect the paint and get a fresh look for the car. In all honesty, it made me fall in love with this car even more as it seems like a new car.

Anyhow.

My opinion about Plasti Dip:

I been getting a lot of questions from people.. So I will state some pros and cons compared with my experience with satin paint, 3M vinyl, and plasti dip.

Satin Paint is by far most expensive and super hard to keep it nice. it chips easy and once chipped, that's it. You can't buff, wax, etc.

Vinyl, the theory is nice. but quite expensive if you hire someone to do. I did couple of test run on my MB FD and also my daily TL when 3M first introduced their 'car' vinyl. it was fairly easy to do and held up well. Until, I decided to pull it off. TL, vinyl came off easy and without any issues. However, my repainted/aftermarket painted FD3S? vinyl took my paint off. Apparently this is a VERY common issues with non-OE paint. Of course 3M did not disclosed this nor would they do anything about it since I installed it myself.

Plasti Dip (purchased from www.DipYourCar.com) is by far best, easiest, and cheapest solution. I heard about this 2-3 years ago. Been watching videos and about a year ago, decided to give it a try (for DGRR). I mainly wanted to use this stuff to protect my MB paint (costly paint job) while I drove around town and DGRR. Bought 4 cans from Lowes, experimented on my lower part of FEED flares (where rock chips were common). One side of the car was vinyl and otherside was plasti dipped. Most people for 6 months had no idea one side was dipped and other side was vinyl.
I also used my daily as test subject and plasti dipped the front grill and few other areas to see how well it will hold up since it was parked outside and saw more environmental elements. 6 months, I had no issues on either cars. Cleaned up easily and peeled off without an issue.

I than talked to guys at DipYourCar.com and decided to get their full car kit (under $400 with the sprayer). The satin black FD you see here is 3-4 layers of their black. I did the entire work in 1 day and drove in the rain about an hour after spraying. I also did 2 track days with this and performed great!! I had very little chips, clean up was easy (just water and microfiber towel, in 15 mins), and than I layed 3-4 more dip after running it for 2-3 months (still using the left over from the kit).

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/1396841_382080761923328_103311190_o_zps94c39095.jp g

With the new color, I have about 6-8 coats of this stuff. I've put over 1000 miles, another day at the track, and the plasti dip is still in great condition. All, under $400.
I'm going to do one more layer in different color before peeling this stuff off. I'll post a results of 1 year of dip later this spring.

Well, after over a year with plasti dip on my car, I've decided to peel it and do some detailing of the car.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/79423FB9-8C85-44F4-B34D-C4E8F715951C_zpsuhkkmvvk.jpg

Friend of mine started a detailing product company in Florida called, 'Stay Fresh Car Car' (Stay Fresh Car Care (http://www.stayfreshcarcare.com/)) and I used their products to detail my RX7.

Before detailing - little bit of haze to the clear.

Products worked really well. Easy to apply, easy to remove, and smelled great too!
I would highly recommend giving their product a chance!

So, I did several track days in year 2014. But one of the more interesting track experience was driving my friends R35 GTR at Barber Motorsports Park.

Here are couple of pics of his car and a video
2010 GTR making about 550WHP on Pump Gas..

YouTube Video: GTR Barber motorsports park - YouTube (Click Here to Watch) (https://youtu.be/LY_cbazSgvU)

My friend let me drive 2 x 20 min sessions with his car. Since it wasn't my car I was braking early and was getting used to the paddle shifter. Also the lack of 4+ point harness, I was sliding around in the seat. But was it FAST!!! Also, even on Race setting, I could feel the traction control kicking in at certain spots on the track. I guess it made sense as I was pulling some serious G in 4000lb car and I guess it kicked in to save me.

Anyhow, Driving the GTR made me realized I needed more HP and I was in the right direction when I started to build and upgrade my engine bay set up. I been wanting to build my own engine and turbos. Luckily I was good friend with owner at BNR Turbos and he allow me to be trained and build my own Stage 3 Turbos (bnrsupercars.com (http://www.BNRSupercars.com)) and Engine build was assisted by my long time engine builder, Luis Canizales of LCR in Gadsden, Alabama.

More Photos of turbo build and Engine build in next couple of days..

More Update...

Turbo Build...

For 3-4 weeks, I would take one day a week to head over to BNR Supercars to learn how to build turbos. Funny enough, I started off by building upgraded Mazdaspeed 3 turbos. Mainly assembling.

Finally, started on my own Stage 3. Everything for these turbos are new. Everything!

Started off by rotating assembly
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/RX-7%20Build%20Thread%20Photos/10679529_10152267003855378_1296867353947046870_o_z psdhklrwdb.jpg

Learned how to balance

After balanced, assembly

Cartridges assembled..

Yup! Here it is..

By the way, Exhaust housing are new and needed a lot of machining and such.. All that was done by Bryan at BNR. These turbos took solid couple of days on my part and couple of days of BNR. A lot of time goes into these.

Next update tomorrow is about the Engine...

Since I was putting in a new set of turbos, I decided to put in a new engine verses using one with about 80K miles on.

To Start, I wanted the new engine to be balanced, lapped, and using a newer housings.

Catching up on my updates..

So, I've decided to pull the dip off and rock my Montego Blue paint. But to protect the paint, I've added some dip to areas where its prone to chipping.. Mainly using Toyo Tires, R888's.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/dip%20off/EF346979-84D1-4D15-9366-3545975201CC_zpsiususw0j.jpg

Also, I was getting my RZ Recaro Carbon Kevlar seats recovered.

I didn't want something too crazy, so sticking with neutral grey suede.

Meanwhile, still working on the OE harness at Chase Bays.. Completely disassembled and ID'd.

Also, working on a bumper. I've been a huge fan of FEED (Fujita Engineering) and RE-Amemiya. Both bumper has its positives and wanted to build a bumper that utilizes best of the both.
I was one of the first in USA to have the FEED Type 2R bumper and lights and its the signal Driving lights of Type 2R that I loved.
What I liked about the RE-Amemiya was the lower half. The aggressiveness of the lower half of the RE-A bumper is what I loved. Hence My 20B FD has the RE-Amemiya N1-02 bumper. So, I fused the two together.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/dip%20off/F87189A0-0105-40D1-9571-2717CF4D57CB_zpsu8okl1cr.jpg

But what I did not like about either bumper is the center lower section raised. This caused a problem when wanting to use front splitter. So, we are making it flat.

Now that DGRR is over, I had approximately 3 weeks to get my car ready for the Exedy Booth at Formula Drift.. Also, I had a feature shoot with SpeedHunters.com
Its been my dream to be featured on SpeedHunters and one of my favorite photographer was going to shoot it, Larry Chen.

In 3 weeks, I'm going to install Turblown EWP kit, my new bumper, new color, new interior, etc.

To start, Turblown EWP kit (aka Davies Craig Electric Water pump)

I'm going to say this is one of the best mod I've done. Why?? Unlike other EWP kit I've seen, the controller will hold the pump from kicking in and pulse circulate during warm up, and once its fully warmed up, it will pump, when temp is too high, it will kick on the fans, and maintained the temp amazingly!! Another awesome feature is to continue to circulate the coolant and turn on the fan after engine is shut off.
Also, getting rid of air after filling the system with coolant was an ease. Just power the pump and fill!

Here is a video I did of the pump set up..

More Update..

I put all the new stuff on mainly to make it to my feature shoot with SpeedHunters. Unfortunately, I had about 3 weeks to pull it off but been working on it on the side for months.
I literally pulled it off the morning of the shoot.

Here are preview shots taken at the house, just before leaving to Road ATL.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/herblenny002/E73549B6-8B48-45C4-BB73-DDC48D1FEB95_zpsopk9t7lh.jpg

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/herblenny002/C15A1A08-AD7D-4A97-9F43-FAD3F578D098_zpsomm86cmu.jpg

My journey wasn't a pleasant one... My shoot with Larry Chen from Speedhunters was set at 4:30. I wanted to make sure I had plenty of time to get to ATL, avoid ATL traffic, goto my favorite restaurant for lunch, and have plenty of time to clean the car... as I drive this car to all the events.

So, Me and a local V8 FD owner who have never been to Formula Drift left my house around 8AM (9AM EST). As soon as we hit the main road, my car started to accelerate without my pushing the throttle, Since I changed up the several parts, I thought I might of not set the idle and such correctly.. After adjusting and stopping every exit on the interstate, I plugged in my laptop to the ECU to see what the possible issue was.. one of the great thing about Adaptronics ECU was you can reset/recalibrate the TPS. We reset and car seemed fine. Until 5-10 mins later it started to accelerate by itself again. At this point, me and my passenger had no idea what it was doing. Finally we got the car idling fine again and hit the road. Again it started to accelerate. Me and my passenger finally figured out, with the laptop, you can reset and recal the TPS on the fly. Everytime we reset, the car will stop accelerating. We ended up resetting the TPS over 100 times from Bham, AL to Road Atlanta. Our favorite was when we hit 3PM ATL traffic. One of the nerve wrecking drive I had was this drive. I would just shut the car off on the interstate as reset didn't help much. I had literally started the 20-30 times during the over an hour traffic I was stuck in.

At the end, I was amazed about two things I put in to this car,
1. Adaptronics ECU... the abilities to reset on the fly helped. Also, my laptop just plugging in and read the ECU without starting helped.
2. Turblown/Davies Craig Electric Water Pump (EWP). This thing truly worked. It was my first time running this kit and it truly did its job. During my ATL traffic off and on engine, I could hear the fans kicking in and waterpump circulating when engine was off. It kept my engine cool during this stressful time. Which one thing I didn't have to worry.

Oh, I forgot, I was also stranded on the interstate because my Aftermarket Industries (AI) surgetank went out. I was going 80MPH and all the sudden, car just dies. I was about to move from fast lane to right shoulder safely.
What I think it happened was, the fuel line I used inside the tank got undone. Luckily, when I was going from Radium single Bosch 044 to AI triple Walbro 440s, I had to extend some of the lines using brass barb fittings. Luckily, I was able to re route the lines so that I could use the stock pump instead of the AI tank. If I didn't use those barb fitting, we would of had to walk to the next exit, buy some fuel lines, and do all kind of fun stuff. Instead re routing took 15-20 mins and we were on the road.. still with acceleration issues.

We finally made it to Road ATL right around 4:15. I called Larry Chen asking where I needed to meet him and he said to just come down to the paddock. Going through the paddock, I felt little embarrassed. Mainly because car sounded horrible and I kept stalling out because it idled like ass.
When I met Larry, one of the thing he asked me was, "are you going to clean your car?". I guess he thought I was going to trailer the car and not drive what it was suppose to be 3 hour trip, now took 6+ hours. I told him to give me 10 mins.

I cleaned up the car as best as I could with my friend Michael, aka TPS resetter. and we went on the Road ATL for the shoot.

Here are some photos I took with my phone..

Update..

For the past year, I been looking into getting a dash unit for track use. Mainly to monitor various sensors such as: Oil temp, Oil pressure, Water Temp, Fuel pressure, Boost, EGT, etc.. as you can imagine, this will clutter the cockpit with bunch of gauges and problem placing them all.

Also, pending what ecu you run some dash unit will not work. So, after searching.. came up with an idea.

Those of you whos been following this thread, I was lucky enough to acquire a Defi Super Sport Cluster. Super rare dash replacement that you can tie into your OE car harness and Defi sensors to replace your OE cluster.

http://image.superstreetonline.com/f/53128736+w+h+q80+re0+cr1/1993-mazda-rx-7-defi-gauge-cluster

Well, Defi recently came out with something interesting.

SMART ADAPTER W Summary | Defi - Exciting products by NS Japan (http://www.defi-shop.com/products/smart_adp_w/summary_smart_adp_w/)

A device you can hook up to your 2008+ OBD II port and stream real time info to your smart phone or tablet. Better yet, you can use their Advance Control unit and also stream Defi sensor(s) reading to your iOS devices!!

So.. I decided to give it a shot!

bought an iPad mini, and downloaded the app called "Defi Meter C".
App looks like this.

My friend at EVOR sold me a Carbon blank cluster surround, which I used it to mount the iPad mini.http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/herblenny002/55D4D09B-565D-4A26-91DF-CDE39069C0C6_zpsy7dccrl8.jpg

Update...

Happy New Year everyone!! I have couple of projects to finish off this year and maybe new one to start later on :)

2 Rotor update..

Going with couple of different stuff this year..

1. Haltech Elite 1500. It has loads of features. One of the thing I didn't realize was the OBD II output. This means that I can still use my Defi Dash and get more reading out of it by using this ECU. This time, I'll be adding Haltech flexfuel, 2 x EGT, Borg Warner Speed sensor for the turbo, wideband, etc. and keep the OMP.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/87B3E325-9107-48A5-B8BB-A84F867CFA1B_zpsafbrr2qk.jpg

2. Chris Ludwig/ Ludwig Motorsports (LMS-EFI) harness for the Haltech. Amazing details on this harness!! This is my second harnesses by LMS-EFI and I highly recommend. They will be also attending DGRR 2017 and will be doing a seminar and Q&A at the event.

Update..

I realized I didn't post anything about the bumper project I did early last year.

Back story.. When I first started this thread, I was building a car for SEMA, my 3 rotor project. For years leading up to this point of building this car, I had a vision of my ultimate 3 rotor. But like most of you, job, family, money, etc. can lead to not quite execute your dream build. In this case, one of the thing I wanted to do was make a unique bumper. I wanted to mash together my 2 favorite japanese companies; Fujita Engineering (FEED) and RE-Amemiya. If you look at the car now, you will see that its pretty much built using both of those companies. But what I really wanted to do was build a bumper using two iconic bumpers. FEED Type 2R and RE-A N1-02 bumper. I love the signal/driving light set of of the FEED and loved the aggressive bottom of the N1-02.

FEED Type 2R on my 2 rotor

Re-Amemiya N1-02 with Front diffuser add on
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/SEMA%202012/SEMA_2012_FD3S_Vegas06.jpg

Back in 2015, I decided that it was time to fulfill my goal of making a bumper that meets my vision. Instead of using RE-A N1-02, I decided to used the N1-05 which has the molded in undertray/diffuser. We cut the both bumpers and started to put them together. (Oh, I should most definitely give credit to my engine builder and long time friend Luis Canizales and his son Luke Canizales for their help putting the bumper together and helping me make the initial mold).

I did not like the 90's 'hump' on the front bumper so we made it to sit flat.

Here is an initial shaping of the bumper.. It weighs 40-50lbs :)
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/FD3DBD8E-82E0-4D8B-ADE7-FAAC321C7D3F_zpsffyloqpt.jpg

We made a mold and pulled one bumper off. When running the bumper on the, it didn't quite fit correctly. It sat quite low and required some hand on modification. Again thanks to Luis and his friend, we were able to have it on and made it to an event very next day (low as in I couldn't make it out of my driveway).

I was able to have it on the car and get it featured in SpeedHunters.
http://speedhunters-wp-production.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/14084518/Larry_Chen_Speedhunters_FD_RX7_Atlanta-24-1200x800.jpg

Meet The Rotary Maniac - Speedhunters (http://www.speedhunters.com/2015/07/meet-the-rotary-maniac/)

But I wanted to make the bumper correctly and more of it.
Following year, I was conversing with my friend Michael about the project. He said he knew someone who might help me regarding making a new updated bumper.
So, I took my initial bumper and started to correct some of the issues. Being extremely low was an issue, so first bumper was cut, fix the height issue, and corrected the flat part of the bumper.

Im running out of time so I will update next week regarding the fitment and the results.

Overall, I was very happy with the results. Fitment was satisfactory for being what it was. Height of the bumper was similar to the stock 93 bumper with 99 front lip. Compare to the first version, its night and day difference in fitment and quality.

Here is my other feature with SpeedHunters... with my 1973 RX3 and history behind it.

Mazda History & Tales Of Friendship - Speedhunters (http://www.speedhunters.com/2016/09/mazda-history-tales-friendship/)

I am honored that Mr. Larry Chen was able to shoot the car. It almost didn't happened because of the weather. It rained all day and as I was leaving the track (Road Atlanta), weather started to clear up and Larry gave the thumbs up.
Like any cars or people at this age, it comes with fantastic history. This car was initially built by a gentleman named Tom McGuire. It was his daily for many years and later I was told about the sale of the car by another friend, Chris Mahaffey. At that point, I was only interested in FD RX-7 so I passed it to a good friend Steven White. I regretted no buying first time so, when it was available for sale, I snatched it up from Steven. I fixed few things and after my marriage and 7 cars parked, I ended up selling it to yet another friend who recently had to sell his beloved FD RX-7, Marco Lau. He owned it for several years and was moving to west coast and I ended back up with this car again. I've updated few things for this feature and all my friends have great memories with this car. My future plan is to put maybe NA 20B in it. But I guess I need to finish up few other projects before I do that swap.

In case some of you don't or can't click the link above, here are some photos from it.

Update:

It's been busy few weeks for me. Purchased a new car for the family. Back SEMA 2015, group of friends rented a Infiniti Q50 3.7 in Vegas. I was driving around and put about 100 or so miles on it. Car was comfortable and had decent pick up in speed. At the SEMA, I ran into a guy who put GTR R35 motor into the Q50, and though how it would fulfill my GTR desire. Well, Nissan finally came out with Q50 Red Sport 400, which I recently purchased. Car is just what I needed. Comfortable daily my wife can drive and enjoy, switched to Sport + mode and car comes alive and becomes a beast with 380WHP (thats what some of the stock RS400's been dynoing). Here are couple of pictures of the car.

Regarding Rotaries...
I've decided to clean up some wiring to get ready to put a new set up in the car.

To do it right, I also needed to pull the dash and clean up the hacked up 20 year old interior harnesses.

Not much to update. Been busy spending time with my son over the weekend and work.
But I was able to sand down my Mazdaspeed Carbon Fiber front bumper lip and clear it to bring the shine back. Than replaced my 99 lip from my SSM FD.

Update:

Over the weekend I was able to do some wrenching on the car.
First installation of Sakebomb garage upgraded swaybar mounts. These things are beefy and well made. I'll be using a new Tripoint swaybar with these.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/8B52D2B8-6C1A-453F-A8F4-1BA085E7A9B4_zpsw5rghq31.jpg

Another thing I was able to do was check the compression on my 1973 RX-3. I recently got the Rotary Compression Tester (http://www.RotaryCompressionTester.com) (RCT)'s battery operated compression tester and wanted to compare to my Mazda Specialty tool compression testers (old thermal and digital).

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/579E5EA0-B207-49DD-BEB6-F33DA7328D17_zpsgahcmgem.jpg

After warming up the car, I've tested just the OE digital and RCT testers. RCT unit uses 9V battery and it has automatic altitude calculation. Its super well made and easy to use. All you have to do is warm up, kill the ignition and fuel pump, install the sensor in the trailing plug hole and crank the motor. I did a facebook live video (https://www.facebook.com/Herblenny/videos/10154392837808927/) hope some of you can view it.

Anyhow, here are the results from the RCT:

Update:

I finally had a weekend to do some car related stuff.

First my daily IS300 Wagon...
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/EF6285D3-B9D2-47B8-85D9-AB7F506DB35E_zpsvw5ax25i.jpg

My RedSport had ceramic/nano coating from previous owner and so far I was very happy with the results. So, I've decided to put the coating on my IS300.
I've decided to try 'Stay Fresh Car Care' as I've had great luck with their detailing products in the past.

Stay Fresh Car Care / Premium Car Care Supplies (http://www.stayfreshcarcare.com/ceramic-coating)

I went with HCC9, 50mL kit with 8oz Quick Ceramic detailer. (less than $100).

First, I cut the car using a random orbitor and various pads and such (3-5 hours)
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/606A461E-6DD6-4ED9-B036-4C6542A6E944_zps4zoc41ic.jpg

Wiped it down with isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) to remove any residue from wax, sealant, oil etc. I than started to apply the HCC9 using supplied applicator. This process wasn't bad. I was told to do small section at a time but the temperature was kind of cool and HCC9 wasn't drying that quickly so I did panel at a time. First layer of application including alcohol wipe down took me about an hour.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/7F114DD3-1417-494D-99F0-DC710E9CDC2E_zps9xejhngd.jpg

I had about 30-40% of the ceramic coating leftover so, i messaged the owner of Stay Fresh about if second coat is necessary. He said it will help. He suggested I use the remainder of the bottle on the car. He said you can apply the second layer after about an hour after 1st application. I decided to let the first layer harden overnight.
Oh, no water can touch the car during hardening process.
Here is the result:
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/46B28815-0975-47FE-8789-29A9BFB9E936_zpswjtamnpc.jpg

Definitely shines pretty decent. I was driving home last night and it was raining. I could tell this stuff was working. In heavy traffic, everytime I came to a stop, a good amount of water from the roof of the car will rush towards the front windshield. Moving forward, I could see the water coming down on my rear window. This is first time seeing such a thing. To maintain, no waxing, no soap, just water to clean the car for the next 5 years! Benefit I see with this is daily driven cars and car that might be loosing little of clarity due to fade.

Anyhow, now about the RX...

I'm re-doing my RX-7 for a guaranteed feature with SuperStreet Magazine. So, I've decided to re do my turbo set up and support my friend Zach, Addicted Performance. He also supports my event, 'Deals Gap Rotary Rally' (DGRR) and helped me by answering many of my questions regarding turbos and tuning.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/2A6B8C78-6EE6-4C27-AF6A-E79B6ADD34A9_zpsvldyhjrh.jpg

I've decided to go with his Borg Warner EFR kit. Craftsmanship on the kit is top notch!! Also, Zach is a great tuner and will be taking my car to his shop when its done for a tune. Hopefully during DGRR and unveil the car there.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e79/herblenny/0F489B26-63A7-4322-BD02-7BEBA1169DD1_zpsskbwwpr6.jpg

Turbo is Borg Warner EFR 8374 IWG with Turbosmart upgraded Bypass valve and IWG actuator.

I've mocked it up on my spare 13B-REW motor, and this is using REW intake manifold. I'll be also mocking it up with Cosmo 13B-RE manifold later on.

Besides this, not much is going on. Spent most of the weekend hanging out with my son and dinner with close friend. Otherwise, not much of a car week :)
