Well yesterday my buddy was hit head on with a jeep and it totaled his truck. He is getting anywhere from $13,000 - $16,000 and he wants to get back into the imports. Now he wants something newer, 1999+ and something under 70,000 miles. What would you get? We have been looking at some WRX's, RSX's, and some GTi's, but he just wants to know what everyone else would do. Also he dosent wanna spend it all on the car cause he wants to have alittle left over to put a few bolt ons on whatever he gets just to make it a little faster.

how reliable are they?
I have heard some pretty bad stories about them, but you know how it is sometimes you only hear the bad things and never anything good

If he has no bills, dump it into a used S14 do a RB25 swap, upgraded turbo, suspension, exhaust, some fatties in the rear, extra goodies and have a good all around car for drag, drift, cruising, the beach, shows etc... Or find a used EVO that has like a damaged front w/ no frame or engine damage that you can fix for around a grand. You might be able to find something around that price range.

tell him not to buy a 240 or anything japanese except g35.
if he wants a nice car, tell him to get an e36m3

Buying a used S14 would put around 10K left to play w/. Buying that e36 would empty his pockets flat out.

Goddamn dude. How many of these goddamn threads are you going to start about what car is the best to get? Isn't this the third or fourth one in about two weeks? Get a goddamn Motor Trend or Super Street, read the shit out of them and make up your own fuccing mind. Goddamn. Later, QD.

AE86 coupe, drop in a blacktop 20v.
You'll have about $10,000 left to spend...
a Kaaz LSD and some nitrous would make one hell of a fun car.

well you could always get a swapped Honda... they offer a ton of bang for the buck
but then you'd be like everyone else who has a swapped Honda.

I got my WRX 2 summers ago for $15K. It was an 02 with 36K miles. You can get them up to ~215whp with just exhaust, a chip on top of that and you're looking ~250whp. The motors will normally have a little bit more torque than HP also.
He could probably get a higher mileage 02 for 11K and then use the rest of the money for a 6speed swap since the 5speeds obviously dont hold any power (see the top thread in the Suby section :2up: ). The cars are showing to hold up very well at higher mileage as a lot of 02s are seeing over 100K miles now.

Well I think today we are going on to look at a RSX type s, a 02 WRX, a few stock 240's, and anything else that pops up at the dealership or on the way there. I told he that he needs to worry about learning how to drive a stick first though so its off to the other buddys house to take the teg out and teach another person how to drive a stick. The only thing that sucks is that yester day when my bud went to the doctor they found that he has some nerve dammage in his arn from where the airbag hit it. Not bad but still it might make hiw have to get an auto and THATS NOT FUN!! O well I will tell him about the older M3's, and GTi's and 240's, and civics, and AE86's and everything else, and see what he wants.

you know i was wondering the same thing... i'm guessing the doemestics on the list were floor models w/ no numbers b/c if you put an average of 15k a year on a car then those cars have over 100k and we all know doemestics don't last long

This is actually from last year 2004. Talking about the # of problems with cars that are 5 yrs old. If they did cars that were only 1 yr old there would be very little data.
It was researched to inform people that buy used cars which cars to avoid buying used. There are other things to consider outside of reliability, such as how well they will hold their value. These 2 usually go hand in hand though.
