View Full Version : How shady are you about your build?

My car has been of the road about 2 years and theoretically will be back up this summer. I know once I head back out to meets I will get the "what do you have under the hood" type questions and I plan on being shady as fuck. I have a bunch of friends that pull up to a meet, pop their hoods and pretty liberally show off what they've got. Isn't that just asking for your shit to get stolen?
For me I like the sleeper aspect (no I don't race) and I think showing off draws too much unwanted attention.
I clicked for poll results to be private.

They're steal your shit without knowing what's under the hood. Don't want it stolen? Park it in the garage or don't build it.

Depends on the person running their mouth. My mustang...I couldn't really lie about that horrific screaming sound from the Procharger. So I told them I had a broken A/C clutch. lol Some people bought it.
The only thing I would be sneaky about is spray...cus that's pretty much all you can lie about, and how much boost you're actually running. Most car people can hear/see what has been done.

There's nothing really sleeper about Supras. Either it's boosted or not boosted. If it's boosted, I'm expecting something wild under the hood. If it's not boosted, I'm expecting the car was just purchased and waiting for something wild under the hood in the coming months. Really dude, of all cars, you should be least bashful about yours. You can't stop anyone from taking your car, no matter how much shit talking and security you have to do or have. So show it off and STFU. It keeps people like me from calling you a prick and walk away from you.

Problem with that is, no one cares if you call them a prick and walk away. I mean that in the nicest way possible. Even if you're at a meet someone doesn't have to pop their hood and tell you all the details. If you want it to be private info, that's perfectly fine. I personally don't have a problem disclosing my build, I typically don't drive cars that are commonly stolen, and I only raced people I knew personally that wouldn't sandbag me. And there is definitely a certain point where you can't continue having a sleeper. If your car really is seriously modded anyone with a good knowledge base will be able to see somethings up.

I'll elaborate later because I'm on my phone but it is an mk3 not an mk4 so I don't know that people make the same assumptions about that generation or it being a commonly stolen car.

I know man... But I honestly think I would still get more enjoyment out of having the car, taking it out from time to time and being neurotic as opposed to not having it at all.

I mean my car is turbo.... It's a 1989 Toyota Supra and the turbo badge is built into the molding on these cars so I can't really lie about that either way. ha. But I really don't plan on sharing any details beyond that and I think I can still pretty easily get away with the "yeah it's stock turbo with a blow off valve and wastegate dump" (unlike a stock NA car where people immediately wonder "wtf is under the hood" when you pulling up whining).

Like I mentioned in my last response I assume you're thinking my car is a 93-98 TT? When I see an 86-92 at a meet I usually assume that it is a piece of shit as most of them are built with rubber bands and paper clips and guys wonder why they blow sky high. I can understand the assumption for the mk4 guys though because I see one of those and immediately assume it's at least a t70 500hp or something along those lines.

How much money we talking about making? ha.

Yeah even back in my BONE stock days I wasn't really one to hang out around my car to begin with. 9 times out of 10 somebody pops their hood and I could give a shit less unless it's a similar car and we can talk setups. Ha I'm ok with being the prick that won't pop his hood.

Yeah man it's stock turbo with a blow off valve and a dump pipe. Also a front mount because I guess I can't really hide that. ha

On a side note I have a good friend who every time I show up at a meet (I'm currently up in NY) he's like "he has this and this and blah blah blah" leaving me standing there thinking why the hell did I tell this guy what I am doing.
It's funny though. A big part of the reason I asked this question originally is because people do seem to get offended when you won't give them the a to z about your car. For me I just want to have a nice cruise somewhere and enjoy hanging out with some folks that have a similar interest but don't necessarily need to know what is under my hood.

I wouldn't advertise what I have, but if someone asked I would tell them. I'm not worried about theft as I live in a nice neighborhood, I park in a garage, I don't go to shady places at shady times with my car, and I don't hang out with shady people. Simple really.
Now if I had a honda well....well if I had a honda I WOULD worry about that theft which is one reason I wouldn't ever buy one so point is moo.

Generally speaking, 99% of people that "hide" their mods come off very douchey about it. Like they have something so awesome and special that the Pentagon wont allow them to talk about it lol I think it really depends on your attitude and how you handle the situation. If your cool and nice about then I dont see an issue with it.
The thing is anybody with common sense and knowledge of cars will pretty much know most of what is done to your car even if you dont tell them. I have never seen your car and I bet it has a built 7M-GTE or a 2J, cams, something around a 37R-42R turbo kit.

Well mine will be parked in a garage as well and I don't hang out with shady people but I do like to go to the occasional meet at say sonic or the varsity. For all the cool folks you meet you're bound to run into at least 1 or 2 dishonest dickheads. It's just unfortunate reality of the tuning scene and I would shout my set up off a rooftop if that wasn't the case. In the end I am glad that I don't drive a honda.

Yeah I really don't want to be that douchebag. In reality im a pretty nice guy who is just worried about a car that I put a ridiculous amount of wrench time into. Im 7 years in and I don't think that I would ever tune a car again if it was wrecked or stolen. In the end I'll probably just go with the setup explanation from one of my earlier posts and I think that will satisfy most people without creating an uncomfortable vibe.
