Welp, you figured out tip #1 by yourself, which is to turn your shutter speed way down from where it was, 1/4000 is way too high. Tip #2: turn your ISO down; you don't need to be shooting at ISO 5000 in broad daylight, it's just gonna introduce tons of noise and if you're running in automatic mode the camera's gonna jack up your shutter speed so the picture doesn't get blown out. From there I'd say to open your lens up as wide as possible (lowest f/ number) and practice panning so you can get some motion blur in the background, and white-balancing couldn't hurt. Apart from that, they're not terrible.

keep the shutter speed below 1/100th and pan with the cars, keep the ISO low to reduce noise, set the camera's focus to AL SERVO so it constantly re focuses, Pan with the cars and fire away!

f/ number is the aperture of the lens, it determines both how much light is let in per a certain amount of time and the effective depth of field.

If you don't know the basics....read the owners manual....a few times. Or if you dont care about getting better then don't bother.

i have and i have read car photography forums...
i have done searches and have looked all over for many things...
there is alot to know... i havent been able to dedicate all my time to it...
most of this stuff goes over my head in explanation at other places thats why i asked for a dummy version... asking questions is what helps me understand...
i dont get very many opportunities to practice then see whats wrong figure it out then fix it... this was my first time when they were moving

thank you to everyone else who has helped

Wow, that was a pretty dick comment homeslice...He's just askin questions to improve his basic knowledge. You started out where he was at some point im sure. Can't expect a professional product just reading an owners manual...it helps to have that shit broken down in laymans terms sometimes. If you can't do that then dont bother ;)

no asshole, its not hard to read, and then practice. knowing how the camera functions and how they affect the outcome is a fundamental of photography.
