ok so here's the deal. i have a 97 civic sedan with a b series swap. the problem im having is the shifter rattles when im driving down the road, mostly over 3k rpms. the shifter doesnt look to be stock but doesnt feel short for some reason. i have replaced the bushing with aftermarket ones but it doesnt seem to have done anything. so is there anything that i can do to make it stop? the rattle will stop if i apply pressure to the shifter but that gets old. someone please help before this drives me crazy.

I'm assuming you checked all the bolts holding the linkage to the underside of the car? And the bolts holding the shifter in the linkage? Not just the bottom pin but the two one sided bolts that hold the cradle shit around the shifter ball too.

when i installed the bushings i unbolted the bolt that is on the bottom of the shifter but i dont think i touched the other 2. i guess i will look at those tomorrow. could it be anything else if those bolts are fine? like i said the rattle stops when i apply pressure to the shifter, as in if i was in 5th gear and i pushed the shifter towards the dash a little.

There is a plastic retainer that holds the ball of the shifter this could be busted and causing a rattle ... Only place I know to get this part is dealer there is a rubber part also I suggest getting both parts and do it right if it's the problem.... Make sure all the bolts are tight and make sure your exhaust isn't hitting the linkage .

1 more thing , the bolt that holds the shifter to linkage make sure the bolts and spacers are on and tight snugg fit ... And if it's the plastic shifter retainer you can use electrical tape just to get you by but it will rub off and start rattling again .

yes the 2 parts that go on the ball is what i was thinking but i wanted to see what everyone thought since i have never had this problem. i know the exhaust isnt hitting it at all. the nut that holds the shifter on is as tight as i can get it with out breaking it so i know thats not it. i have another shift linkage that im going to see if that plastic retainer is in good condition on it and maybe use it until i can get a new one.
