Cam gears

What is the purpose of a cam gear? Do all engines have them and u cant see them most of the time, or is it something you add to improve performance. I understand what they are, I just dont understand why some cars have really large ones sticking out of the side

For timing tuning purposes. && DSM just have really large one for some reason.
most ppl just get the adj cam gears for looks. lol

Yup!

Most folks dont even adjust the gears on the Dyno. LOL
