View Full Version : VTEC not engaging? plz help :(

ok i have a ls-vtec with a b16 head.
im running a chipped ecu, that i've tested on other car, so i kno it works
vtec wired in @ mainstream. if i disconnect either the solenoid or the pressure switch i get a cel.
ive checked my oil level.

what else should i check?/ how do i check it?
could it be a mechanical malfunction inside the head?

the first time i took it for a test run, it seemed a little quicker, (as if vtec was kickin) not too sure, but after hittin it on the way back to the shop, it threw a cel (think it was the pressure switch) not too sure, and i couldnt rev above 6800k rpm, it did this a couple times after reseting the ecu, then it stopped completely now no cel's and it rev limit continues to be 8k. but no vtec.

did you forget to add the VTEC fluid?

google how to test the solenoid - you will take a voltage check and a resistance check of the solenoid.

oil pressure - you need it to engage vtec. if it is to low, no engagement. also, how is the screen on the solenoid - clean?

also - just because a shop wired the car for you, doesn't mean they did it or did it right. may want to check that the wiring is indeed run and is pin'ed into the correct spot on the ecu. they may have a wire switched... just a 5 miinute check to rule that out.

i'll say its oil pressure, cause if was wired wrong it will throw a cel right away, try changing the oil to a 20-50 to get more oil pressure

i would be careful with what you say about sponsors on here.

why did you just have mainstream look at it? or even ask james what he thought it was.

I would suggest speaking to the shop that worked on the car, im sure they would be glad to lend a hand at troubleshooting what is wrong.

Do I need to say it again? Also like I said, if you feel its a problem with the wiring I will be more than happy to go over it again for ya, but like I told you its either a bad pressure switch or low oil psi.

VTEC WORKS, and then throws a cel, so obviously it is wired correctly hence it works at a time.

VTEC WORKS, and then throws a cel, so obviously it is wired correctly hence it works at a time.

all of this info would have been nice to know in the first place. i figured he talked to you about it but he didnt state that so he was questioning you and what you did. end of story.

not calling out any sponsors. i know they make the world go round,(thanks sponsors) and are 99.9% legit.

however, i have seen shops charge for work never done or done incorrectly... fixed a jetta that had an engine swap done at one of the most "reputable" shops in the area - it did not run due to the botched and butchered harness... this was of course after they had it for a year and "did it right"...

plus, the sponsor seems to know what they are talking about in this case...

yo make no sense i did say it " in the first place" nor am i saying the wiring was done wrong, im simply putting all the facts out so i can get a resolution. and im not positive it ever worked.. im jus saying.... but im gonna swap out the pressure switch and see what happens.. thanks for the help.
