HOMESTEAD, Pa. -- 50 Cent said he's saddened by the fatal shooting at a theater that was showing his new movie, "Get Rich or Die Tryin.'"
But the rap star turned actor said people shouldn't jump to conclusions that the movie had something to do with the violence at the theater. The rapper said that those involved in the shooting "weren't kids." He said the victim was a 30-year-old man who had a dispute with three other guys.
Police in Homestead, Pa., said the man was shot Wednesday night after watching the 50 Cent movie and getting into an argument with another man inside a multiplex east of Pittsburgh.
No arrests have been made in the case. But an official with Lowes said the company has decided to stop showing the film in the theater, pending the investigation into the shooting.
Meanwhile, an Ohio neighborhood has pulled midnight showings of the movie. Rioting occurred in the Toledo community last month after a neo-Nazi group visited the city, and police were concerned the film might lead to more unrest.
Guess which scene in "Get Rich or Die Tryin"' was the toughest for 50 Cent to shoot? Here's a hint: it was not the scene where he recreates the day he was shot nine times. It's the scene from early in his career when he was just learning how to rap. He said it was hard rapping like he didn't know how to rap. He said he just "made up stuff" in that scene.
Meanwhile, there's a silver lining in the cloud that hangs over the movie.
"Get Rich or Die Tryin"' finished fourth in the box office race this past weekend. Studio estimates said the movie took in $12.5 million -- this, even though it played in fewer theaters than its competitors.
