DSM problems

My buddy drives an eclipse rs, and has a potentially serious problem. I'm not sure how familiar people are with the 420a but thought i'd ask. When he's around 2900/3000 rpms, he gets this grinding metal on metal sound. It appears to be coming from the driver side of the engine, towards the transmission. Anyone got any advice?

He posted this on the DSM board. We suggested he pull the inspection cover from between the engine/tranny and check and make sure none of his flywheel bolts have backed out or something along those lines.
