"The Alternator WILL WORK B on D or D on B, whatever.

On Civic/CRX/integra's the easiest way to differentiate alternators is by 3 rib pulley or 4 rib pulley. NOT by motor code. Example: B series alternators (4 rib) are the same as 92+ D series (also 4-rib).

You cannot put a 3-rib pulley on a 4-rib alt. or vice versa. The alt. shafts are different sizes (I tried once).

Also, a difference between them is the mounting ear location, although with the right belt it's not an issue.

That said, rest easy knowing I've always run a SOHC D Alternator on my B16A for pulley-frame clearance. I'm using a 760mm (3 rib) belt, part number 31110-PM5-A110.

I'm also using a 4-rib alt. on my SOHC D16A6 to maximize blower belt grip and to take advantage of the 92+ crank pulley (boost).

The starters are different.

. . .from my personal experience, you CAN run a sohc alternator on an LS (b series), you'll just need to either A) get creative with the top tensioner bolt - or - B) swap out the top tensioner bracket to accommodate the difference in tensioner bolt placement. (it's a little further back than the B series)

-jonathanso in other words no. im sure if it was a with time and money question that would be fine.

no, in other words taken from the quote i posted:

"Also, a difference between them is the mounting ear location, although with the right belt it's not an issue."

so, with a short enough belt, you can null out the differences. I (personally) did not have the correct belt, and found myself having to use the original belt taken from my B series. The answer to the OPs question is still "yes, you can."
