Boosted H22A vs H2b

Wondering witch setup would be better for boost. First off, not doing anything crazy this is a daily drive.


H22A with the long gear H series tranny or H2b with a short gear + lsd type r tranny. My goal is around 320-350 whp. Witch would be better for boost?

if i was boosting i would do the h2b but i would find a gsr tranny. The type r tranny i think will be way to short once you start spoolin you will be on the rev limiter every gear. The gsr will ride out alittle more and it's still shorter then the h22 tranny

i think the h23 tranny is about the same as the gsr so what would the point of going h2b be if its the same gears?

ya the gear ratios are very similar between the h23 and gsr

True just depends on what he wants to do

Long geared transmission - lower acceleration, higher top speed and mile/hr ( like bonneville salt flats)

Shorter geared transmission - faster acceleration , lower top speed and mile/hr ( like a rally car)

Cons of longer gears - people will tell you that you will "stay in boost longer", but that only by the butt dyno, when your acceleration is slower to get to desired speed

Cons of shorter gears - good acceleration, higher rpm speed at highway driving speeds car goes more quickly into engine load. This means more use of fuel and even less economy than what you had.

Pros of shorter gears - good acceleration, good for street use to get to speed more quickly. It makes a 1.8 litre act like a 2.5 litre in acceleration rate

Pros of longer gearing - Bonneville speedway top end over 168 miles/hr. (not like you'll ever see it)

I agree. But, if you are making a good bit of power you also don't want that short of gearing because traction may become more of an issue. He also said he was dailying it. I would prefer (not saying it's best by any means) longer gearing when boosted especially for daily. With stock head, he can't rev (well, he can but wouldn't advise. lol) to an extremely high rpm so that takes away some from the time in boost. Also, depends on the size of turbo. If you have a smaller turbo it will fall on it's face on the top end so shorter gearing would be beneficial, but with a bigger turbo the longer gearing would be nice for spooling. Also, it depends on if the motor is built of not. But, for the op. His HP goals are easy to reach on a stock motor with a .57 trim at around 9lbs. Sleeves are good to around 350, I've been told.

but if you decide on running the type r you should swap out that 5th gear especially for daily i can tell you 60mph at almost 5000rpm sucks for the highway well my 4.7

I like GS-R transmission because the gear aren't too short nor too long. Just right.

F22A1 tranny. 160 in 5th at 6300rpm

when i had my gsr turbo teg, wish i had a longer 5th gear - like a LS 5th. i would top out at 150-155mph. it didnt take me very long to tap it out !!

i will probably end up going to an EP3 transmission in my civic over the 6-speed for the better gearing. right now they are so short that with my power i can't hook to save my life until 4th.

Berta- I would say I feel your pain, but the K20 6-speed is geared for 180-ish. WAY more than i require lol

h23 and gsr trany are not that close in gearing look at the final drive. All h series tranys are high thats why everybody is going h2b plus the 20percent lose in moving parts which ads to hp on the dyno. As for the hp you are wanting and the money difference and it beind a dailey driver buy a m2b4 thats the lowest geared lsd trany there is for a h ( besides the tyoe s trany which you want find) or a m2a4 same gearing no lsd i promise you will be more then happy with it. About three months ago there was a m2b4 on here forsale for 400 so if you look you can find one reasonable. Later on down the road if you decide its not low enough buy a lower final drive still less then the h2b kit and the bseries trany.
