I want to drop one in my Ranger. Any advice? I will make a build thread too if it happens.

Block:

Heads: Explorer GT40P

Transmission (manual):

Cam: E303

Pistons:

Rods:

Crank:

Mounts:

Harness:

Headers:

Exhaust:

Intake:

Drive shaft:

Rear end:

What am I missing? I will fill this out as I go through. Kind of like a list of WTB. I would greatly appreciate it if I could get the estimated price too.

Thank you in advance.

What?

High Output motor is built better and more durable then just any 302
I was told once by a 5.0 GSP Officer that the LX mustang had the best Motor idk.

1987-1992 Mustang was a good choice. Prior to 87 you where about 25hp shy, and in 93 the power rating was dropped around 20hp and 15 ft lbs. The 1987 to 1992 where rated at 225/300. Bolt on a set of Explorer GT40P heads, a small cam such as an E303, and a good upper/lower intake and you will have a pretty decent budget setup.

So can I get the mounts off of an exploror? What year? Tramsmission? What's the price outcome look like?

There are tons of SBF to Ranger motor mount kits out there. Personally for a transmission I'd try to find an AODE out of the same Mustang if you want an automatic, if not you can attempt a T-5 but be prepared to replace them often if you decide to make any power. Price depends on how extreme you choose to go.

First off - to the OP:
How much power are you wanting to make? Do you plan to carb or use EFI?
Is this to be a DD, or just a weekend toy?
How much budget over x-amount of time, have you planned?
Who is doing the work - a shop or yourself?
If yourself, how much experience do you have with swaps and fabrication?

Power: As much as I can for a DD.

EFI most likely.

DD

However long it takes for the motor in the Ranger now to go out. A vast amount of time.

If I come up to something I can't do, than a shop. But I will ask for some help from anybody who wants to. But I will be doing a lot of reading and asking questions.

best bet for now is to use a stock HO motor. Getting the engine, trans, and exhaust in place should be your top priority. worry about building the engine after you already have the ranger successfully swapped to 5.0L.

Alright, what would be the first step? Motor mounts I mean.

If you go with a stock 302 block, you are limited to about 450rwhp on a daily driver. If you go with a 351w, you can safely do around 750rwhp. If 450 rwhp is enough, then go with the 302, as it will end up cheaper.

Best bang for the buck and easiest to install route without nitrous would be to buy a good used 302 and T-5, and a small Vortech blower. Stock motor, with a S trim, 30-42# injectors w/MAF, and a chip for the ECU, Walbro 255 intank, should get you to about 325rwhp, and daily driveable. Later, you could add some heads, cam, intake, and go up to 450rwhp safely.

I like the sounds of that. How hard do you think labor would be? Price?

If you have the time, as you indicated earlier, you should be able to do the swap, and install a SC with little out of pocket for labor. Most of the parts come in the Vortech kits - which you can find for sale used on Craiglist for under $2500. It's pretty straightforward. For help, I suggest you post on the forums like Corral, and learn about the swap, then see if you can have a couple of guys to help you on a Saturday - and you provide the beer. That usually will find you a couple of helpers.

Check this out:

http://www.jamesduff.com/broncoII/v8conversion.html

And your best bet would be to pick up a 5.0 out of a Lincoln Mark Vii with matching trans from Pull-a-part in Conley. www.pullapart.com

Most people overlook the fact that the Mark Vii's have the H.O. motor.

If you do the T-5 be prepared to get the hydraulic thowout bearing for the T-5. They are Cable operated in the Mustangs and the Rangers are a Hyd operated TO bearing.

Also You wont be able to "Legally" pass an emissions check here in Ga. You're only allowed to swap an engine that was offered in your year and model. Of course there are ways around this.

Unless he lives somewhere where emissions isn't needed....Like where I live. lol

I just looked at whatever he had posted in the rh upper corner which is Ellenwood or Stockbridge. But like I said there are ways around all of that! :goodjob:

give Ball Engine a call, they do tons of them and can custom build one to your needs.

If you are still looking for where to purchase all of this..

mpsautosalvage.com

I completed a 3.8 to 5.0HO swap in my 95 mustang earlier this year.

The motor i got only had 32K miles on it and I picked it up for just under 1K. Then all the other miscellaneous parts needed to complete the swap like CCRM and the Harnesses and the minor stuff ran me up another 500.

So I spent 1500 and 4 weekends worth of time doing this.
