I just thought I would post up some pics of some heads that my engine builder, Andy Mullins, is working on. Mine are next. Can't wait!!

Looks really good! Better than my heads I ported in the past, probably due to the materials I was using..lol Are yall going to replace the valve guides?

I have pictures like that:)

Exhaust port added. I do not know if he is replacing the guide or not. And a WHOLE lot cheaper than Cosworth ;)

thus why you get them slightly used :D

half price and only had about 1500 miles on them. probably won't ever find a set for that kind of price in that condition again though... i figured since i had the cosworth cams i'd make it into a matching set.

Half price is still double what you have to pay, lol.

Yea, but he sat on his ass and got proven power.

And on that note, I need to learn to do some porting... lol

So did this customer :)

It wasn't really about getting the bling or name or anything, I just didn't want to pull the heads off of the car to have them ported, I wanted to retain a stock set, without having to buy new castings from subaru and then having them ported out. I have been told that Cosworth patents their head porting process and they are proven to make damn good power so I couldn't complain.

I am sure they do. It is a CNC process, so they don't want someone else getting ahold of their program and doing the same port.

not bad- i prefer killians myself

does this guy have a flow bench that he is doing these heads on

For finishing work, but he has been doing it for 15 years+ now. You start to see patterns I guess after sooooo many different heads.

And that's what makes all the difference. REAL results, not just theoretical flowbench numbers. You are looking for bottom line gains, not just representative numbers that say you COULD show gains. People get too hung up in some of the engineering aspect and forget the real goal: POWER. Same with dyno's and the people that look at build sheets all day but not what they actually have accomplished.

Accordpride- by no means was this directed at you by the way, I'm only stating my opinion :goodjob:

Interestingly enough, several auto manufacturers got hung up on flow bench numbers years ago, only to find that motors that did not flow as much on their flow bench were out performing them! They then found that there was more to heads then just flow bench numbers. Things like velocity, swirl, scavenging, etc play just as important a part as theoretical flow numbers.

oh i def understand all thats stated above but i was jw if he had one or cc'ed em or if he jus looked at em and made em close

Absolutely. A lot of guys were hogging out K-series heads and flowing huge numbers (370+cfm!) but not gaining any power, and in some cases even LOSING power against proven designs that were only flowing like 340-350cfm (only....lol)

I think the problem is that people get so hung up on the "cool" parts that they forget an engine is designed to work all together as a unit. An engine with a bunch of hodgepodged together nice ass parts can get whooped up on by an engine that focuses on the big picture with more conservative parts and a little elegance. :goodjob:

yes sir^^ prolly one of the smartest things ive read on here in a while

Another reason Andy tries to match the ports, cams, header, valves and turbo all together. If you just throw a bunch of mismatched parts together, expect mismatched results. If you plan it all out as a complete system, results are soooooo much better! The ports on this one and the header on this one will be matched to the cams and turbo that are being used. My heads will have a bit bigger ports, a bit bigger exhaust primaries and a bit bigger cams to match the turbo.
