I dont think so. I pulled into a QT once and two cops were there and they said to me "when are you gonna get some real headlights?" and they were referring to my yellow film, i was like "wtf..." lol but they didnt tell me it was illegal and didnt write me a ticket

It is legal to a point. It depends on the percentage of tint. It is similar to that of window tint.

If you drive a normal everyday BMW that isn't really modded aesthetically or performance wise don't do it. I love the yellow tint on BMW and Porches since it race car inspired (to me at least).

IT IS NOT LEGAL ON ANY LIGHT!! Nightshades, yellow film, or even clear film. You are modifying a DOT compliant piece of equipment, thus making it illegal.

Not true, Automobile glass is also DOT approved, Therefore...If what you were saying is true then any kind of window tint would also be illegal.

Any modification to any DOT complaint headlight, tail light, side marker, CHMSL is illegal. FMVSS108 (exception being other DOT complaint bulbs intened for that lamp).

(I an an automotive engineer who designs OE headlights for a living, I work directly with NHTSA on compliance laws)..;)

take a laser pointer and shine it through a piece of glass at an angle..................it will no longer point 100% straight..........add another layer of 20mil film, it will double..................

That's why tint isn't allowed on windshields, it is only allowed to a certain percent on all of the other windows in the car. What always bugged me is that you can't legally get your windows tinted as dark as auto manufacturers tint factory windows, look at the 20% tint in the back of SUV and pickups.
