We bought this '77 Beetle with a blown engine. This is what happens when you don't keep a close eye on what is going on and make sure everything is tightened to the right torque. This was a completely built 2.2l engine with everything aftermarket. Even engines put together with good parts are crap if you don't know what you are doing.
We bought this car and engine like this and it will stay this way. Its not even worth rebuilding. So the car is getting another engine.

What's wrong with it? Can't you just bolt it back together? Later, QD.

Might need a bit of JB weld to make it stay together.

Yeah, hella flush between the valve and the piston.

Heh, maybe for the newer ones. You have to be retarded to screw up an aircooled vw engine this badly.

Atleast everything is there. I'm still missing 2 rods. They're on the side of I-20 eastbound somewhere.

Damn, I'm pulling apart a 79 Kawasaki bike that's been outside for 20+ years and its engine looks mint compared to that pos. Have fun!

...when you have a 2.2L that was created from a 1.6L engine, the material has to come from somewhere. The issue with boring these motors out so big is that there isn't enough material left on the cylinders to prevent this from happening. I don't think this was as much assembly error as an issue with over-revving the piss out of the engine, looks like valve floated, struck the piston breaking it, then shattering the cylinder.

To bump a 1.6 to a 2.2, you have to get new cylinder sleeves and a new crank case so they are usually thicker. But you're probably right; Beetles don't have a tach so some people won't know how much is too much.
