Wii steering wheel...

I'm going to get the Wii Mario Kart so I figured on getting a couple of wheels. Do the wheels actually have anything to do with the system or is it basically just a mounting point for the controller? The steering wheel doesn't actually hook up (wireless or wired) to the console, right? Later, QD.
