View Full Version : General Chat What Vehicle Are You Ashamed To Admit You Want?

Nerdsrock22

This thread was going on at Jalopnik, and I thought it was pretty interesting.

All day long we talk about cars we'd like to own, love to own, have to own. Then there are these other cars, the ones we desire but don't talk about. What vehicle are you ashamed to admit you want?

So what's your guilty pleasure?

Here's mine.

A Camaro is quite a stretch for a Honda nutswinger like myself. I've driven a couple, and they are so rugged...almost truck like. But there is something raw about them that I could never get in a Honda.

Yeah, I understand. I went from a 95 Civic to a 92 RS LS1 swap. I must say I loved the handling. Mine was lowered about 2.5 inches. The suspension needed to be changed badly but it still handled great.

Suzuki Kizashi - I think it'd make a fantastic daily driver. It looks great, it's got a nice interior, it's apparently quite good to drive, and it has a good set of standard equipment for a good price.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2658/4088544338_2b5721ff57_b.jpg

Jaguar XJR - I don't care if it's an old man's car...I think it's absolutely gangster. I think it's gorgeous, it sounds good, and it's everything I want in a luxury car. I'm picky though...I only like the 2003 models, the 2007 - 2009 models, and the 2010 model.

http://home.comcast.net/~mjonesgraphics/black%20xj%202010.JPG

Buick Regal GS - I'm only somewhat "embarrassed" because it's a Buick...but it's a great car. Just an Opel Insignia right? If I got one, I'd just change out all the badges.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FoXyvaPSnVk/S0V6Cf5ECZI/AAAAAAACY9E/KM_HjwkrnbQ/s800/2011-Buick-Regal-GS-01.jpg

Ford Mustang - I've never liked these cars past the 70s, but when the latest model came out I was REALLY taken by them...and now the 5.0 liter engine is coming and I just don't think it can get much better. I would love to have a new Mustang GT.
http://files.conceptcarz.com/img/Ford/Ford-Mustang_GT_2010-Image-00017-800.jpg

Audi Allroad - I like this style for some reason...seems like a comfortable car I could live with, and I wouldn't grit my teeth if I have to get its feet dirty. I don't know if that's even a good explanation. I just like them. I like wagons...and this is a quirky twist.
http://www.jeepinfo.ru/photo/wallpapers/1024x768/audi-allroad11.jpg

Volvo XC70 - Same reason as the Allroad. I like the V70R as well, but that's not so much a "guilty pleasure." I'd admit I want a V70R before I say anything about an XC70.
http://www.canadiandriver.com/photos/2006/volvo/xc70/xc70oceanrace_9-1.jpg

I may come up with more later.

Toyota Celica, I don't really care anymore about what people think. This car looks great, and I could care less if it is a "girl's car". I am not ashamed anymore.

VooDooXII

I don't think the Celica is a girl's car...but I certainly wouldn't say it looks good! My cousin has a red GT-S like that one though. They're good fun to drive. Great car actually...I just don't like how they look.

Jeep Cherokee - I'm not big for SUVs, but there are a couple I like...I mean I'd proudly admit to wanting a Range Rover or a Touareg TDI. I don't know why I like the Jeep Cherokee so much. I think they look good and they're one of the last "real" Jeeps. Actually, if I could get a diesel engine and a manual transmission in it...that'd be my daily forever.
http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/3/3236/2541/33088770001_large.jpg

Cadillac Eldorado ETC - I always used to like these because I thought they looked very "mafia." The car itself isn't really that great I guess. Northstar engine is fantastic, but the transmission it's paired to is super slow and it's front wheel drive on top of everything. There's just something about this car that appeals to me. No idea what it is. Same goes for the Deville DTS.
http://i40.tinypic.com/slibs0.jpg
http://www.arabalarmax.com/data/media/50/www.arabalarmax.com_-_Cadillac_Deville_DTS_M.jpg

Fornasari RR99 - I'm really only "ashamed" because this car looks so wild. It's got an LS-something engine from a Corvette, 600+ horsepower, and a badass interior. Yes, those are Lamborghini tail lights.
http://image.motortrend.com/f/auto-news/odd-exotics-italian-automaker-fornasari-reveals-rr600-tender-and-rr99/25405088+w750/fornasari-rr99-and-rr600-tender.jpg

Let me go ahead and preface this with the fact that I don't really hang out with car people, especially import car people. All of my best friends drive pick-ups or SUVs. My girlfriend refers to my WRX as a Kia (jokingly, but still). So, I wouldn't really be ashamed to admit this to IA, but definitely would be to the people I actually spend my time with.

That's probably due to the build quality and a good deal of cheapass idiotic owners. I really like clean stockish looking ones.

I spent a summer working on a friend's one with an SR20 swap and it really did feel like a cheap jap car. The interior pieces were dreadful and lots of parts would break. You've also gotta bare in mind we're talking about an affordable at the time, 20 year old Jap car, so it's to be expected really. If you're just going to straight up gut it, cage it and racing seat it then you'll be good to go and end up with an affordable setup.

I think they are a lot better than an Integra. They weigh about the same depending on the trim, and just as much power. The Celica's engine is overlooked so much but it has potential. It just deserved something better compared to what it was in the past.

These are cars I'll willingly admit to liking, however most people would be baffled by why I'd ever like them.

Lotus Esprit - It's old, it's clunky, there are probably so many cars that are better but I have such a soft spot for this car. It's just an honest-to-God mid-engined sports car and yet there's still something unconventional about it. When's the last time you saw an Esprit? From what I know, it's not that great of a car...awkward driving position, skittish handling, dubious reliability, but dammit it's charming.
http://www.gulum.net/arabalar/resimler/lotus-esprit08-1024.jpg

Acura Legend Coupe - It's elegant...don't care if it's an old man's car. I think it's very stylish and it makes for a very comfortable ride.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e3/Acura_Legend_Coupe3.jpg/800px-Acura_Legend_Coupe3.jpg

Bentley Continental T/R - I really don't know what to say...I like these much better than the new Continental GT and they're more accessible than the newer Brooklands. Don't know why they made that car so exclusive when it's just an "Arnage Coupe" or a "hardtop Azure."
http://www.autoweb.co.uk/compupix/bentley-continental-coupe-petrol_352349.jpg

Honda Prelude - I'm never one for Hondas but I love the Prelude. I wish they still built something like it. I like the early one and the last one.
http://enjoymotocar.com/download/26042-2/Honda-Prelude+1997+%2304.jpg
http://i42.tinypic.com/fxe35t.jpg

Morgan Aeromax - I know taking chances with design is a pretty bad idea in the auto industry but holy hell Morgan makes a GORGEOUS car. I know plenty of people would write this off as terribly ugly, but that's really where any "shame" is. I love this thing.
http://www.clivesutton.co.uk/images/Morgan/Aeromax/Morgan-Aeromax-leadbig1.jpg

Citroen C6 - I really just like how strange this car is. I think it looks sinister personally. No shame in admitting to liking a few other Citroens though...the new C5 is beautiful. It'd make a nice Audi alternative.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/72/Citroen-c6-05big.jpg

Volvo 780 Bertone - I like big coupes, I love those old Volvos...best of both worlds. Yea it's boxy and plain but there really is something stylish about it. Maybe I just like that boxy style...
