Tread seperation (spare)

So i had a flat on the MKIV about a year ago from road debris on the highway. Caused some nasty tire shredding on the right rear tire. No problem, whip out the spare and be on your way. Put on the spare and within 50 yards, tire seperation - see link below. I wouldn't have believed it if i didn't experience my self. To top it off, dealer (discontinued) and local tire dealers don't carry 17" spare tire sizes, lol. No one does locally. After hours of research located one online (very expensive) and 1 local tire retailer with a special order. Anyway, has anyone experience tire seperation? Does anyone when it starts to occur, esp for spares since alot us drive older vehicles. Discuss.
