Senate clears way for local street races in Ga.

ATLANTA - Senators have cleared the lane for local street races, touted as an economic development initiative for cash-strapped Georgia.

Senate Bill 345, sponsored by Sen. Jim Butterworth, passed 41-9 on Tuesday.

Under the proposal, racing on highways or streets would be allowed when the race is sanctioned by the county or municipality and the road is closed to other traffic during the race.

Emergency medical personnel would also have to be present at events and the race would have to be publicized 30 days prior to the event.

The Cornelia Republican says such races could be a big tourism draw for Georgia. Critics derided the proposal as a public safety issue.

That's actually pretty awesome IMO. But that's not really real street racing, or in other words the rush you would usually get from the illegal part. But still cool to do this on the street nonetheless. I know when we do digs it's on a street, alley, or parking lot away fro traffic. When I do hwy runs I try to be well away from any traffic and don't like weaving around cars like most idiots do to make them feel cool.

talks of illegal street racing should be kept in the Kills Forum, not all of us wanna hear about that BS. This thread is about legal street racing, meaning i wouldnt have to worry about some stupid fucking street racer crashing and killing me and my family as we are trying to go out to dinner or something. Im all for legal street racing though...

Just imagine the IRL setting up a street course race for Georgia. That would be so awesome. The state has to do something to get money flowing. The film industry has started to come in thanks to the Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act.

You all know this wasn't meant to be for street street racing like drag right? From my understanding it was setup mostly for a real event because that's been illegal to do in GA by law, aka a real street event. Not to say there won't be a drag race type deal every now and then who knows but people who were interviewed about it only mentioned real events and making hundreds of thousands to millions off of it and a drag race won't do that...lol.

No, that is not how it works or what it is for.

This law would simply allow an event promoter to plan and advertise an organized racing event and use normally public accessible streets as part of the venue. In other words - events like hillclimbs, rallys, touring car races, etc, could be run on public streets - as they can be in some other states. For example, the Grand Prix of Long Beach is run on public streets - but do not confuse that with street drags.

Read David88Vert's comment. A street race as in street race EVENT is not a fast and the furious street race. In the past the law has not allowed organizers to setup a street course using public GA roads. This simply gives that option, we may not see anything from it, who knows?

180 spur could be used easily. Also, GA75, US129, 180, 60, RRR. That's just in one area.
Additionally, there are several places up in the NW corner also.
All you have to have is an increase in elevation.

I have the perfect 7 mile section that does not block any houses from emergency services. Unfortunately last years death of the founder of Cool Shirt at the Alabama hill climb isn't exactly going to help that happen...
