try hooking up an external screen to your laptop to see if anything comes up, if so your screen is going bad. here is some useful info :

The screens for a 15 inch laptop usually run 170-250 for parts depending. Labor is 35 an hour, minimum of 1 hour charge, although on HPs screen replacements usually run around 2 hours. Most other places will charge you 60+ an hour.

EDIT:You get off easy, the part number for that screen is around 80 bucks.

You sure your screen isn't coming on at all? I would look to see if you can potentially see the picture under a bright light. Most often times it's the power inverter for the LCD and the screen is actually coming on you just can't see it due to the inverter not powering the backlight. If that is the case then an inverter might cost you $20-30 on ebay and about 15 mins worth of work to put it in. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my HP laptop. I just plugged a Monitor to it and voila. I dont take it anywhere or really have to use it since I have another laptop and desktop.
