My uncle has one with 294,xxx miles and wants to trade for an old daily S10 i use. Now idk what the hell is an ek or all that jazz and shit. So if someone wants to learn me on that, I'd appreciate it and reps will be given. Info on replacement engines (Not race ready or anything like that) as this will just be a 80 mile commute daily. i'd like just general information from guys who own them and work on them. Not wikipedia shit.
Thanks and reps to the ones who will help.

Is it a coupe or hatchback? If it's a coupe, they're known as EJ8 and if it's a hatch, it's a EJ6.

They are alot of displacement motors for a GOOD DD, with awesome mpg. Cheapest thats reliable is a d16y8, 1.6 VTEC, not too fast, but it'll get you close to 35 to 40 MPG. If you want something alittle faster, a b16a2 would be a good swap, quick, good gas mileage.

If it's your first honda, it'll be easy as hell to work on, to be honest lol. They're like legos.

Yes it's a 4 door. Idk what motor is in it from the factory or anything like that either :dunno: :lmfao:
I'm not too worried about power but a nice blend of non geo metro and a geo's mpg would be good.

If you are daily-ing the S10 88 miles everyday, you are sure as hell better off trading. Keep it stock, D-series motors are a dime a dozen and cheap, and if you have enough mechanical talent to stack Lego's... You can swap a Honda motor should something go wrong...

hell even with those miles on the motor you can rebuild it and get about 200k more.
I would do it i mean hell even in pretty rough shape a civic will pull more than a s10 this is coming from experience. I have had 2 s10s and civics lol
You can get complete running replacement motors easy for the civic and have options on choices of motors.

Trade, you can probably just buy a lower mileage d series for cheaper than rebuilding one.

i did the same thing, ig to me a 98 4dr, now im planning to keep the same motor instead of spending money on another motor, im building a vtec head and just swap it in with the vtec solenoid and it should be good to go

What model? EX, DX, LX, etc.

IMO they're not great when trying pass up traffic. But if you're a patient person and don't mind driving sort of on the slow side they make good DD's for the mpg. Used to get 420 on a full tank in my Civic VX. With a four door you should be able to get around 30+ mpg.

Almost all D-series motors will drop in with little to no modification. Parts are common and most are interchangable.

And for all the EK jazz. More of just a way to described the body styling. (Ex: EF-88-91, eg-92-95, ek-96-00)

I very seriously doubt it's an EK, it's gonna be a EJ.

Sedan: Trims available in the sedan body style were the EJ6 (US DX/LX/VP, Canadian EX/LX), EJ8 (US EX), EJ9 (1.4L SOHC model), EK1 (1.5L SOHC VTEC-E model), EK2 (1.3L model), EK3 (1.5L SOHC model), EK4 (Japanese SiR, European SiR and/or VTi), EK5 (Japanese 1.6L SOHC 4WD model), EK8 (Japanese 1.6L SOHC model) and EN1 (US GX).

It's most likely a d16y7. 1.6 non vtec. I have the same engine in my car and I get 37 MPG. I also have 200k+. I'd say ride out till it blows. Then pick up another y7. Not fast at all, and really long gears, but it gets me from a to b and You cant beat going around 400 miles on 1 tank.

that's what i was thinking it had a y7 in it and my girl had a 96 LX with the same motor and it got great MPG's esp for a DD. keep the oil changed every 3k miles or so, if you get behind it you can see if it burns oil by taking it up to redline or a little less and it should be good to go. if anything goes wrong a replacement motor won't cost much esp if it's non-vtec. actually it would not cost alot to put a vtec motor in it if it does not have enough get up and go for ya, even by putting a vtec head and an ecu the y7 block is the same as a y8 and parts are cheap used and even a little machine work would not cost much. in the long run it will cost way less on gas than an S10 for sure.

one more thing, if the cat converter is on the header that will suck if it cracks because nobody has them used really, but it can be changed for cheap to pass emissions still. i know where a good one is but i cant get to it in the tow yard lot b/c i want the header b/c it is rare that way.

Very true, that is if you want to get very technical, but as I said it's more of a way to described the body styling.

i love the gas mileage even tho i drive from home and work which is 4 mins down the street lol, thanks for the car again... i found out that the oil pan and cam seal was bad, i got everything fixed already, so far its a work in progress, just gonna ride the motor out til its gone then swap unless i find other options i would take up

Civic u have has a d series. all civics do except for the 99-00 si. d series just means it is a single cam motor and b series has to cams. dohc motors have mord potential especially ones with vtec but if u r using as just a dailey keep tbe engine it has and put an intake on it and you'll b good.

B20B!Ithink?
03-06-2010, 07:53 PM
yea you can put another d16y8 in it for so cheap and replacement trannys are also very cheap for d series motors. b series motors are the very opposite lol like my gsr tranny 460 but its in mint condition

B20B!Ithink?
03-06-2010, 07:55 PM
oh y7 no vtec and a retarded intake mani thats ok vtec doesnt show on d serie anyway lol
