Im looking to buy a indash Navi unit that is compatible with the ipod. I keep seeing navi units that say they have a usb connector, but dont say anything about the ipod specifically. The reason I am looking for 1 with ipod connectivity is b/c I have a system (2 12's 2 amps) and on my current cd player, it has an AUX port. I can connect my ipod to that, but it wont play, the installer said I need something extra to use my ipod. So with that said I want a unit that is ipod ready and when play my ipod through my setup, without needing extra crap. Any experts, installers plz chime in and help me out! Will the ones with the "usb connectors" work or does it have to specifically support the ipod?
Edit: after some research a lot of these units require adapters for the ipod, and thats fine, but I just want to make sure these will in fact be able to be played through my system.

it really depends. most of the ones that have USB will work but they have to say they work with ipod.. Its really wierd.. If your looken for a nice indash DVD id go with something like the Kenwood kvt-514. its got a nice ipod interface with it and its simple to use.. If you go with the pioneer all the USB's should be set up for ipod. and you can get the cord for the ivideo as well so you'll be able to play the movies and such from your ipod onto the screen.. But those are my suggestions.

What kind of price range are you looking at? The 2010 Pioneer units are nice. Also Alpines but they don't play CD's, just MP3.

what!? i've never heard of such a thing...they 'don't' play burnt CD's or any store bought CD's??
if it's a burt CD thing, it probably just can't read a buffer, burn the CD on 1X or 4X...64X write speed is great for a data disc but it puts a ton of blank spots on CDA's.
you may also consider something with a built-in hard drive in lieu of ipod connectivity...unless you are just an iKinda iGuy...beats having to plug your ipod in everytime.

What he meant was that most Alpine units are "media receivers". This means they do not have a CD slot. You can hook CD changers, mp3 players, etc., but not drop a standard cd into the unit. Take a look at www.Alpine-USA.com (http://www.Alpine-USA.com) and you will see.

Anything you buy needs to state it is Ipod Ready for the Ipod or Iphone Ready if you are going to use a Iphone.

Thanks guys, and that AVIC-X920BT is nice, but a little more than I want to spend. If I can find a nice indash navi for like $500, that would be good. I may give up on the navi part, idk yet. Does anyone know if the Clarion VX400 is any good?

how about the AVIC-U310BT? finding new going for $375, needs the cable but it ipod ready...its a smaller 4.3" screen but could be nice just to run some headrests or visors.
if you've gotta spend $500, could also check out the clarion nx and nz409, flip/double din.
what prices are ou finding on the VX400?

I found the VX400 for $383 new, but to get navi I have to buy a separate unit that connects to the headunit. Its good b/c I can upgrade at anytime w/o having to buy a whole new headunit, the separate unit can be updated for new maps, and the unit is a dedicated GPS system, but the bad part is the separate hide-away unit is $300 by itself. I was looking into the AVIC-U310BT, but Ive been reading that the Navi part needs work. I have a GPS system, and it needs work too, which is the whole reason why im looking into indash navi's, I want something better, faster, more accurate and I hate having that mount on my windshield too.

There's a site selling them for $340 shipped. Looks like an awesome little unit for the money and I'm sure the quality is great.

The only issue I've heard about the Pioneer unit is that the POI list is not as extensive as it should be because they did it intentionally so youd buy the extra POI's on an SD card.

I may get it, plus I like the idea that I can pull off the face and take it, fucking thieves are running rampant these days. I read some reviews and they all pretty much said the same thing, "great for the price", which means its ok b/c its cheap, but does have its short comings. Im still looking, and that is still on my list though, thanks.

It is a good unit, I have sold about 12 of them. The portable option is very nice. The only downfall is it does not play DVD movies.

buy a kenwood.best ipod interface, easy to use. navi updates are free!!!!!!!! idk how much navi updates are for other manufactures but my eclipse cost 345 just for a updated navi disk. but kenwood has the updates on there site you just download it and stick it on a sd card. trust me its worth the money. if you get any of the ones with a 6.95" screen they have a reverse tilt feature, it sounds really cheesy but in some cars its great because it get rid of the glare from the sun.

yea, but kenwoods are the same as Clarion, I would have to buy the seperate gps unit and connect to the headunit

^^^^^ ummm no dude do some more research, yes there are units that you can add the navi piece to, however there are all in one navigation units as well. kenwood is nothing like clarion. either way its my opinion. do what you want but when you buy a pioneer or a alpine and realize that in a year or two they have a update for nav and you have to dish 300 more bucks to get it your going to wish you got a kenwood. not to mention ipod controls suck on a alpine and or a pioneer. but what do i know?

Also the pioneer avic310 does have a removable face but that's for security and updating, you can view maps while the face is detatched but it will not navigate, the face does not have a built in gps antenna.
