View Full Version : General Chat Infiniti J30 getting a 5 speed!
swimshark
02-08-2010, 03:14 PM
Well my auto transmission has died and instead of dumping $2k into transmission rebuild or putting in another used auto trans, I am deciding to do a 5 speed swap into my car.
As far as I can tell this will be the first J30 in the south east with a manual swap.
Getting all the parts I need for $500. Will update thread more with pics of the project as it goes along.

Hey if these cars were never sold with a 5-speed, then how are you going to mount up the clutch pedal assembly and Master cylinder?
swimshark
02-10-2010, 05:19 AM
just got back. exhaust off, driveshaft split, starter pulled, tranny atf cooler lines pulled, transmission dropped, torque converter off, flywheel off, finished deleting egr, romoved most of lower dash and pulled lots of components, pulled seat out, and pulled center console out. started looking at how to mount clutch pedal, where to cut hole for shifter and where to mount master cylinder.
later tonight will be going back. i will be removing the auto trans harness from the main harness (unravel tape and separate wires from 5ft section :/). pull cruise control modules since it is where my master cylinder is going to mount and start looking how to mount it. also going to chase e brake line and figure out how to get it setup for a hand brake. also a friend is going to look at how the hole is for the shifter on his 300zx z32 and trace it out to cut hole in transmission tunnel on the J30.
this is pretty much what 5 guys were able to do in one night. will post pics later today. got work at 8AM! lol

Well tonight and tomorrow night are down nights. Im hoping most of this weather blows over because I am planning on getting transmission and other parts on Saturday morning. Then the fun will begin with mounting master cylinder and getting transmission to fit up in the tunnel.
Got some goodies for the swap and an extra part to make doing oil changes not such a mess on my motor.

well my main push it that this car is my DD. i dont have a second car. it just happened by chance that my AUTO trans died so i have an excuse to do the swap.
i like my car and do not ever consider selling it if motor or trans dies. when the motor dies, i will buy a second car but keep the J30 and the 300zx TT motor goes in. :goodjob:
talked to the guy that i am getting the parts from tomorrow and he said the 300zx is in a garage so i wont have to worry about weather making it sucky to get the parts i need. :D

Last night was a successful night. Got the transmission fully mounted with new flywheel and clutch. The other guy I talked to in California said I would have to do a lot of custom fab with the tunnel and rear bracket on the transmission, but I only had to make small cut into a section that wasn't needed and the bracket lined up perfectly without and modification.
Once transmission was mounted we got the shifter setup by first cutting the hole needed and then assembling it. It works good except for now I have to get a short shifter since with current throw, I'll be smacking my knuckles against my radio and gauges.
Still need to hook up the hand brake cable, finish up the wiring and then get drive shaft made soon. Going to be calling in today to some places. Then its time to reassemble my interior and get it running! :D

Im going to measure tonight for the drive shaft length and take it to Drive Shaft Specialists off of 41 here in Marietta on Thursday morning. I have test tonight and wed, so wed night i am going to try to go over and get wiring done and start putting interior back together. Depending on how long it takes to get drive shaft done I am looking to get it done by this weekend for sure.
Oil relocation bracket is in today from summit and seeing right now if one of my friends can run to Z1 Motorsports to get the short throw shifter. Its mainly reassembly now and firing it up.

You can haz free dyno!!! Reason being is I'm very impressed.
Thanks John! You guys at Z1 have been a big help being able to go in and ask you guys questions about what to do with certain parts of the swap. Also Z1 has been the place where I have gotten the parts I need to make it happen. Looks like you guys get to each test drive it when I bring it over there. :goodjob:

went to drive shaft services. they need the u-joint and slip yoke for the manual trans before they can do anything. luckily i was able to find that out while ilbcnu123 was a Z1 picking up the short shifter for me. Z1 hooked me up with this part of the drive shaft so i will have it in first thing in the morning so i can get it back by friday. the guy told me about 8 hours for them to complete it. now i just have to time this out to get it on the ground this weekend!

Oil filter relocation kit installed, hand brake cable done, speed sensor hooked up and located the wires for the reverse lights to attach to the reverse switch. We tried t bleed the clutch and it has a good feel when you press it but it only pops half way back and there is no air in the line so seeing what is wrong there. Drive shaft services said they will call me with a quote. Took the yoke and stock drive shaft to get lengthened. I may be pushing it to get the drive shaft Friday so looks like I will have car assembled and waiting for drive shaft this weekend. :(

all we have left is:
-connect reverse light switch. (wires broke so hes gonna have to solder them now)
-Interior back together (dash back in, cut piece out of styrofoam under carpet so clutch pedal has room, center console in, custom shift boot, seats back in)
-Exhaust up
and that should be it

i doubt that much right now lol. id say i freed up about 15lbs on drive shaft and maybe another 15 or so from not having the torque converter. id be happy if it got to 190. next thing in the works is getting a J30 ecu looked at and chipped for tune ability.

im emailing some people on eBay that are selling the auto and manual trans to see how much they weigh. the auto took 8.3qts of atf and the manual only requires 3 qts of manual trans oil. curious to see how much lighter this setup is.

i weighed mine at silver dollar with 3/4 tank of gas at 3535 without driver
ok just got email back from both guys on eBay. auto trans shipping weight is 210lbs and the 300zx manual trans is 140lbs. so guesstimating about a 100lb overall weight drop with the swap.

well saturday it looks like i will be testing some different ECUs out also. i had issues with the auto trans and swapping ECUs because it would screw up with the torque converter and freak out at different rpm/speed. im only using the auto control unit for speed sensor and reverse switch. so hopefully i can get a manual ECU that will help with my tune. i have stock exhaust still so i might be able to get into the 190 range. 200whp would be cool to achieve.

Thanks for all the reps and congratulating me on the project and the work that was done. This was a fun project and a big under taking for me. When we first started there was a question if I was sure that I wanted to do this and after the transmission was out and we had screwed up some of the parts, I knew there was no turning back. Its funny because 3 years ago I didn't know much about cars. I will keep this thread updated with the dyno session that is going to happen tomorrow at Z1.
I also still need to finish up the shifter area. I am waiting to hear back on some custom boots and shift knob that will go with the interior of my car and I need to get it detailed soon. I've already put over 800 miles on it since last Sunday and everything is mechanically sound. Couple things to tweak, but nothing major.
