View Full Version : Cleaning up classifieds idea...

Alright, so looking at a few threads tonight I got an idea on how to clean up the classifieds section and make it much easier to browse, search, etc. All FS threads should lock automatically upon posting so they do not get cluttered with complete BS. The OP will still have the option to edit it and make posts themselves in the thread, much like the blogs section, but no one else can respond. The OP can "bump" once a day so it would take 19 days for the thread to reach two pages. All questions could be PM'ed and all issues can be discussed via PMs. If the OP needs to be adjusted because of questions that were asked via PM, then the OP can still update it as well.
This would make the classifieds section much easier to monitor. Not only that, but it would make them much easier to read. I was looking through some threads tonight, and I found one that was 8 pages of "bump, ttt, omg I love this car..." 8 pages of that, and Im sure somewhere in there there was useful information about the car. Someone shouldnt have to read 8 pages of "bump" to find one or two useful posts about the car.
The only thing that could make it better is if there was a bump button or something that you can press to bump the thread to the top... But since I dont think that exists, the OP could bump the thread once a day, but no one else could post up, thus creating less clutter in the thread.
What do you think?

And if someone has an issue with the OP as far as they think they are trying to scam someone, or they know issues about the car that the OP is hiding, they can PM a mod and a mod can delete the thread until the issue is resolved, then the thread can be reinstated.

Good ideas, but might be tough to implement.

Decent idea but it eliminates some good elements.
I've called people out on lieing about parts they have for sale, cars , an other stuff, things that you can't do if it's locked. Also makes it too hard to talk or discuss things in the current thread, pm's are just too slow and complicated.
I think people need to Really be banned for posting glws, or bump, or nice stuff. That kinda of shit ruins so many threads and makes them longer than they should be.

maybe the could make a bump button that you can only use five times a day and make it so that the only things you can post in threads is useful shit.

that is why i don't like the idea. if someone gets called out on some shady shit other people wont be able to know because of pms.

GON's FS section is setup this way. Does make sense with useless bumps but also backfires if some bullshit happens between a seller and potential buyers. Then again, if anything does happen and someone gets caught lying about it, you can do screen shots of the PMs and post them in the appropriate section.

Sounds great, but PMs really are too slow. If you dont have your notification set up, you probably won't know if you got one or not. Then you have to actually read and respond and if you're at work or something, that's an issue.
I agree people should just get banned for continually posting glws, etc. or causing BS in threads.

Sounds like nsxprime, and imo it makes it harder for people to ask questions that everyone can see and could help or hurt the sale. If they wanted personal contact like pm, imo they would have chose craigslist instead of IA.

How about a function that lets you decide whether or not you want to read the posts from everyone or only from the OP?

Thanks for the feedback guys.
As far as everyone saying "well what if the buyer is scamming, etc..." We have a feedback forum for a reason, and I feel many people do not use it when they have a good deal on here. That way if there are any questions about the buyer being shady, scamming, or has a history of scamming, all you have to do is search the feedback forum.
As far as saying PM's are too slow, would you rather sift through 8 pages of "bump, glws, ttt," or would you rather wait a few extra hours to get a response?
Again, thanks for the feedback. I was hoping to get some good feedback on the idea.

And I know Im guilty of it, but I think if you say "reps for bumps," the thread should be deleted. I have done it in my threads, but all that does is create even more clutter by people bumping just to get the reps...

For the new route maybe implement instaban with longer durations for each violation. I.E. bumps, GLWS, i want this, etc. would be instabans that eventually lead to permanent bans. To enforce this rule further, mods could go in and delete unnecessary posts.
I say keep the thread open for posts to ask questions about item being sold. This way people are kept informed real time and the OP doesn't need to update thread constantly, except for marking "SOLD" etc. Increasing PM box to 300 would be nice too.

The problem is enforcement. I can think of 10 people that post nice clean glws in every for sale thread
I hate when groups of users post on their buddies for sale thread "bump for my boi!" kinda shit. Every once in awhile no big deal, but when a eg ef da squad member posts somethig for sale then everyone in his crew comes in and whores it up it's rediculous
the mods need to bear down and just start banning IMO make an example out of 5-10 people

i say we all go commy and say fuck freedom....
your idea sucks and should not be implemented..... its my opinion...
my fs thread has like 100 bumps ttt and glws......80% by me trying to bump my thread because all the other pos cars are getting the same bumps from other whores bumping another thread over mine.....i get no exposure for my f/s because of this..... i paid ten bux for a useless for sale thread.....
i say the op gets to mod his own thread.....and let it ride his way since he bought his add...... i dont like the banning.... but i dont like the bump and all the shit that goes with it

I actually like how it is.
Yes, noobs get their post count up.
Yes, it gets cluttered.
However, don't fix what ain't broke. It works fine, IA is a huge place to buy and sell. I'd be pretty irritated if it changed.

I bump threads because I looked at them, not to get my post count up. If a thread goes to the top maybe it will help that person sell their item(s) or sell them faster. I know I have been looking for something before and missed it somehow when searching or browsing and someone just happened to bump the thread and I saw it. Plus if someone is a scammer or selling shit and someone else knows about it....I think it should be put into the thread.
As far as having to scroll through for all the info....thats what the original post is for...all the info needs to be there not anywhere else in the thread.

That wouldn't work either
