First off, bare with me as I am Honda illiterate. I just picked up a 96 GSR with a chipped P28. The emissions computers can't read the ECU. Do I need to swap the P28 out with the stock P72 for emissions? Also, would swapping the P72 back in throw a possible CEL? Any help would be great. Thanks

seems like the car was converted to obd1 for tuning purposes. convert it back to obd2. check and see if there is a jumper harness of some sort

Yes you have to pass obd2 emmissions. no you will not pass with the obd1 ecu period! you have to put in a obd2 ecu with no cels and get the readyness up and then you will pass emissions if there are not any other issues.

Yes, the car is OBD2. And the P28 is OBD1, correct? That's why it it not reading the ECU. What is the process of changing the car back to OBD2? Just swap ECU?

Correct! swap ecu and unplug the conversion harness i think and if everything is good (no cel) than you shoud be good

Thanks Hatch. I'll start looking for a stock ECU and locate the conversion harness. No, the P28 should be OBD1. Found this to confirm that.

So what is the going rate for a P72 stock ECU? Just so I don't get screwed.

you'll need an obd2a p72 (makes a difference for your car). unplug p28 and conversion harness. swap back to stock injectors and remove wastegate spring (external gate) or disconnect actuator arm from wastegate flapper (internal gate) if boosted. make sure you have primary, secondary o2, and cat. drive easy for 80ish miles to return to readiness.
