View Full Version : enhancing wifi????

ok so.... "theoretically" speaking.... :ninja:

say my neighbor has wifi... my laptop will connect to said wifi connection with a "fair" signal... BUT lets say i wanted my xbox 360 to pick up that connection as well... anything i can do to make the signal stronger??

or anything i can do to get the box to be able to pick up the weaker signal??

oh.. and lets also say that i do have the newest xbox wireless adapter with the 2 antennas and is black. (i believe it's an "N" adapter)...

any thoughts??

Tell your neighbor to get a high gain antenna :-), don't think theres anything you can do though. But if you were trying to make your signal stronger from your router i find that custom firmware from dd-wrt works wonders along with high gain antennas. Or call comcast lol.

You could always just break in while he isn't home and run an ethernet cable from your xbox. *Theoretically speaking of course*

LOL you cant do anything on your end to make it stronger. He needs to put in an access point inside the house closer to your side to boost anything.

Stick a repeater outside between your houses lol. Or some routers you can mod the firmware and increase his transmit strength. Although this wont fix much if your transmit power sucks on your xbox or laptop.

But then again, internet doesnt cost much so quit being a cheapass.

a repeater is not the proper way to do it. setup a wireless bridge.

i found some enhancers... but they aren't too cheap..

also in speaking with a friend he was telling me that since i have the N adapter on the xbox it probably will only pick up N signals..

could that be the case?? the newer xbox adapters are N, and the older ones are G if i'm not mistaken..

and i know internet isn't too expensive.. BUT i just moved.. and have a baby on the way.. plus i'm not makin bank.. so i'm trying to cut all costs that aren't an absolute must.

If I'm correct, no. It should be universal and pick up any other types of wireless internet.

I didn't do any research, but I know plenty of people with N cards in laptops/xbox and they connect to routers I know aren't N routers. :goodjob:

Like these guys said there are several ways to increase the signal:

1. A high gain antenna, which is not possible on most new routers because the antennas are internal.

2. DD-WRT if its possible on the router, this can boost the transmit power.

3. A wireless repeater.

BTW it is a felony to steal wireless internet, it's awefully hard to get caught...

easiest way would be to stop being a douche and get your own internet....theoretically of course

i noticed a significant gain in performance in my home wireless when i password protected it...and then noticed cox cable at a neighbors house 2 days later....lol

It's actually not hard to get caught using a wireless signal... Anyone broadcasting a signal has access to all connections made to that router... All information has to go to and from that router in order to access the internet. This traffic can be seen with the proper tools and can also be read, in the case of WEP( WHICH IS AMAZINGINGLY INSECURE), or can be decrypted, such is the case with WPA and other strong encryption types. You're information is not necessarily safe... But this does of course depend on where you are connecting and who you are connecting too.

So yeah for those of you who aren't stealing internet and have your own connection... USE WPA! WEP Is easy to crack if you know what you are doing.... This could also lead to insecurities of other accounts, because it is often times enough that people demonstrate repeated use of the same password over different login scenarios.

all kinds of things you can do.
start searching for wifi mods, hacks, "satellite"

you'd be suprised what you can do with a simple wireless card...

yes, it really fucking works.
USB wireless key, usb extension, and a satellite dish.
DO IT!

and another thing, if you dont password protect your wireless, then its technically not stealing. if its open, its fucking open.

thats like leaving your door open with a welcome matt and complaining when people walk in.

I am sorry but the law doesn't work that way. Take a class on computer security. Just because you are too dumb to protect yourself doesnt mean the law doesnt protect you. I use WPA2 TKIP+AES with a 16 character randomly generated passphrase. I monitor my wireless and will find those who try to steal it.

So if I leave my car window down you have the right to steal my CD's? Sorry, don't see it that way, bro.

Same argument can be made for scrambler boxes and stealing cable. Or downloading music. Just because something is THERE, doesn't mean it is YOURS.

Ummmm no. He is trying to boost reception - not output.

get a used wireless adapterfor the xbox (find one on the cheap incase you screw it up) and mod it with THIS (http://www.rosewill.com/products/1165/productDetail.htm) super high gain antenna. or better yet, you COULD get a weatherproof antenna ran to the outside of your house, from the wireless adapter. idk man thats how my friend steals internet for his 360 lmao.
