Sucks.....

Hospitals won't hire you if you dont have 1-3 years experience in the exact department/position you are applying for, but how are you to ever gain experience, if no one will hire you?

Internship

Well, that kinda defeats the purpose somewhat...interning for a desk job....probably not worth the $9/hr.

Now, If I was interning as a new lawyer or doctor, then yes, internship worth it.

Sammich

straight up BS...i stayed where i was at for so long to get the experience because i saw the jobs that were in my field required at least 5 years experience...so as soon as i got the 5 years experience, we cut back on hours, a couple of months following that, i got laid off...i mean hell, wtf is going on with this world?!!?! freaking hire me!!!

Oh...I thought you meant a doctor since you said hospital. Those desk jobs are hard to get. If you start off as a receptionist at a small doctor's office, then that's usually what they consider as "experience". I have about 6 months of that kind of experience, but there's no desk jobs available at any of the nearby hospitals :(

It is pretty ridiculous. I can't even get a response from potential employers. The jobs in my field of study (Spanish) require experience to be considered for the position. How can I get experience if I can't get a job. Basically, my degree is useless. WTF?!

That is exactly what pisses me off. They even do that with the easiest jobs. Who better than the employer to show you how they want it done?

my sister and i were talking about that the other day...who is suppose to give you experience if YOU wont...we have to learn somewhere..which pisses me the hell off too. i want to venture into another part of civil engineering, but as gay as employers are, they dont want to help you learn, makes no sense

Let me get this straight, you actually studied SPANISH and wonder why you cant find a job? In case you havent noticed, finding someone in the US that can speak spanish is about as hard as finding someone that speaks english.

but as gay as employers are, they dont want to help you learn, makes no sense

Why should they train someone when there are a thousand people in the same field that already have the experience they want? With as bad as the job market is right now, they know they wont have to pay them any more and for at least the first however long, depending on the exact job, they will get a lot more production.

Most employers want a candidate that is competent in the written language as well as the spoken language. That's why many linguist and translator jobs require a degree in spanish.

On a serious note. I have applied at almost every where in Hall county with no luck. Even after calling them several times a week. Nothing is hiring unless you have a degree and want to make the wage of someone who doesn't even have a G.E.D.. Hell, my cousin got lucky tho. No G.E.D., no college, dropped out in 9th grade. Now he works for Fielddale as a 3rd shift maintenance supervisor/manager making around 35-58k a year.

He's doing a great job if I say so myself. Ohio for one, many of those that I know that are un-educated or under-educated are finding work compared to 6months ago. I'm also finding more opportunities myself in my field of work, expecially compared to last year. This is just the first quarter. And he's only been in position for what, barely a year?

So I left a paper saying " Here is a Tip: Get a different fucking job bitch! It doesn't take 30 mins for you to bring out a drink, and then give menus. Please let someone who is capable to do your job have....like me!"

if you are getting told you have too much experience after an interview..... your fucking up.....

too much or too little experience is a easy way to say.... we dont like you.... period..

my advice is to shut the fuck up in the interview...

someone who always has something to say about a topic or gives opinions about a interview question other than company policy gets labeled as a person who will not follow procedure...

you might be so eager to make a good impression your going over bored with your answers, talking yourself up, or making yourself look cocky...in a bad way.

generally an interview should be quick and to the point unless its a panel interview.... where you want to show intelligence across the table to all involved.

for my last job.....

i had a 3 minute..... 3 question interview..

guy asked me.... what projects have you worked on..... i ONLY named them..

guy asked me.... whats quality mean to you..... i said quality is right the first time everytime.

guy asked me.... what can you bring to the table and offer this company.... (knowing the buisness and job that im applying for) i responded i will do such and such (the worst job there is to do in my field) for 9 hours a day everyday if need be.

guy say well....... thats about it....interview over

5 minutes later the secretary says your hired and i get my per diem check and im outa there.

thats what people are looking for..... these days...

with that theory then what is the purpose of 'waisting' your time going to get extra education? you would be better off NOT going to school if they want experience...you would be better off looking for internships when you graduate high school opposed to going to a univeristy or a technical college to 'further your education' and 'enhance the opportunity' to 'advance' in this lame ass world.

that has crossed my mind as well, but there should be something against that, as many people out there looking for jobs, they should just hire and when that person leaves, then let them go and go through the list of applicants that you've gotten in the past and call them in to for an interview, know what i mean, but dont just cut the person just for the thought of they will leave. you know how many people when i was in high school working at a grocery store just left just to go to another grocery store, same principle, a person is not going to stay at a job JUST because they are in school, etc....again BULLSHIT

I meet a lot of people every week at my job that are getting certified in microsoft programs and apparently from what I hear if you want to make the big bucks you can sign up to be a contractor over in Iraq and you can pull a quarter mill easy in one year. The only problem is that there is a chance that you might be shipped into the worst part and it could be dangerous, but I met a lady that has been doing it for 5 years and she told me she has never even seen one bullet fired and never felt her safety threatened once!

I don't know about a 1/4 million but I know people making $100000-150000 easily. You have to have more than just mcp or a+ certs to get that kind of money. I'm in the security field (just starting) so I'm staying away from the average jobs.

IT makes good money and you don't need a college degree but it is saturated ie there is a alot of people in the field but companies are hiring all the time. Govt isn't running out of money anytime soon.

Sammich what do you do where are you trying to get hired?

You make 3 times what you make here usually tax free. But the time for overseas work is drawing down since we are pulling out of Iraq

I agree that if you are being told over-educated or under-educated then you're not giving a good interview. I have ZERO IT experience (formal training) but I have a strong resume IMO. I have a ton of management experience and run my own business that does over $250,000 in sales per year alone.

I got an interview with TEK systems and the guy told me as soon as they get approved for funding on a new project I'm hired. He has since contacted me back to Check up so I have a good feeling. He also called me in for another meeting on Friday.

In my interview I was quick and to the point, he asked me why I was switching career fields and I gave him a simple answer, I was confident but not cocky, I'm a good people person so I usually start off professional and by the end of the interview the interviewer is casual and cracking jokes lol

polish up on your resume make it sound better and work on your interview skills.

vteckidd, im currently going to school to be in the security field, but i wanna specialise in something such as linux.

the thing with tech jobs is that people are intimidated by it. look at all that is required by most of the job postings out there.

i know linux fairly well ( ok just know it ) and just to get a basic job in linux you need to atleast be proficient in LAMP. its weird. however the output of fresh tech students has dropped 40% or so since like.. 2006? i dont know. thats a lot. people are doing shitty get shit quick learning programs. a+ and microsoft certs are not my cup of tea.

As stated earlier: Answer the interview questions as they are asked. Only explain more if asked. Over talking in an interview will almost 100% guarantee you are going to put your foot in your mouth because you are trying too hard.

Also, send simple thank you letter recapping the interview, as well as a SIMPLE follow up in a week or 2. HR people see individuals all day and love simplicity.

In this job market first impressions are KEY.

Yeah autocad just doesn't seem like a particularly hard skill to learn. You may be reaching the crest of your education meaning , you are not qualified for higher jobs, too qualified in terms of experience for lower jobs.

That and civil engineering is dead right now. Lots of people laid off looking for jobs.

I mean that's how I was man 3 years ago. I was tired of making $14000-18000 a year working for other peoples small businesses. It sucked I could have been making $50-70000 a year as a service manager at a dealership.

But the problem was I had all this management experience at small shops so I was qualified, but no dealership experience so I couldn't get hire at a dealer. Thats when I decided to start my own business and my plan was getting out of cars for good in 2-3 years as a main source of income. Two years later and I'm there.

I just realized anybody in the performance shop industry isn't making $50000-60000-70000-80000 etc per year at all. Not even close. Why stay in an industry with only lateral movement? Only people making money in performance car shops had money to begin with. Or general maint shop OWNeRS make good money.

My advice is evaluate where you are in your career and what you're lacking and figure out if this is really the smart field to be on longterm. What does your career require you to know to make $60000-70000-80000+ in that field? Figure it out and start gettig that education

otherwise you'll always be expendable and on he bottom rung

and who you know makes a huge difference , work on social skills ;)

I know no one and not much for bsing people. But I gotta find a new job, so if I gotta start bsing, I'm going to start bsing!

i guess thats what it all comes down to in the end.. its time to start meeting people lol

Hey if you guys want to go work for some asshole Muslims doing tech support who treat you like shit and make you work 11pm-7am on the weekends then go apply to Guarded Systems in Roswell. These guys send their money back to Pakistan instead of helping the American economy, all they ever talk about is how great Pakistan is and how wonderful it is to be Muslim, which is why I quit. They voted for Obama too, and they love Islam, so they can kiss my ass, not even worth the money, I'd rather be unemployed then work for them, but go ahead and apply! :D

Everything but Columbus. And we're actually growing, albeit not very much, I think by nearly 6% a year, but we are. Also, the cost of living here is as low as most of the entire southern region and u dont get ripped off for living within the city limits.

Also, this city does not rely as heavily upon tourism as yours. Hence why this city and most of the state is considered boring. Many, many more corporations and Corp Headquarters exist within our city limits. Most of Charlestons employment is within the medical field and tourism, what else is going on? Yea, u have a pretty state, but so is Virginia.

Columbus' economy runs on research, defense, technology, insurance, finance as it used to be the Corp headquarters of Bank One which is now J.P.Morgan Chase, obviously logistics (for its location and the reasoning on why this place grew during the steel age) BEER, like the ridiculous presence of Budweiser and of course it being the capital of Ohio. We were hardly affected during the recession.

About Michigan: the country knows that state waxes and wanes with the automotive industry, clearly theres a reason why u see lots of Michigonians around the south and elsewhere. Detriot is a very large city, once the automotive industry suffers, people must find work. Lots of them are even within our city now, looking for work.

If you are looking for shit jobs then you need a different resume. I have a bachelors degree and I work at a desk job during the week(38k/y) Trying to move into management and I think I will get there withing the next couple of years.

Anyway before I started there I worked a shit job at a decoration store to get by. I sent them a resume with no college education on it. They never knew I had a degree. My boss had much less education than me. Had he known I had a BBA... never woulda hired me. A manager wont want to hire somebody with more education and experience than him in most cases.

Now I also applied for a weekend job and again I sent my dumbed dow resume. I worked as a security guard in a youth rehab center on weekend. Worked there for 3 months till I moved to get close to my week job. And there as well they have no idea about my education and my real work experience.

I basicaly have two standard resumes. One for professional positions and one for crappy jobs.

i really thought about doing this, but i believed in putting everything out there at once...

what about my job as a CAD Technician...i mean thats my most recent job..if i give them a resume stating basically that i havent worked since Feb. 2007(the job i had at bilo) then they are gona wonder, why do i have such a long time without a job, ya know

Then get a job and quit whining.

Go apply at the mall, go apply at CiCi's pizza, go apply at mcdonalds for all I care as long as it is local and not run by foreigners, help the economy if you can. I know we all have skills that we thought were useful, but we really need to be learning more trades and go back to the land in my opinion. We need to farm more, mine more, create wealth and infrastructure, not be ruled by a huge Federal government that can't even agree with themselves. Localization will cure our country guys, get ready, there is going to be Chaos here just like Greece when the economy burns.

You can tone down your position. It's all about the wording. If it sounds too technical then they know you will be UNDERemployed with them and keep looking for a better job while working for them.

Let them think that this job is a good oportunity for you and not just a paycheck. Worked for me and they never knew what kind of education I had or my previous salary etc...

I made this decision after being old at an interview "you sound like a great candidate for this job but we know youll leave as soon as you recieve a better offer from another company" That was at an interview as a service rep for BMW dealership. The bet the guy interviewing me had less education than me. I was perfect for this job, I know my BMWs and I'm a fanatic. after that I made a different resume for entry level positions.
