Try calling the number on the ticket. I know in TN you can do that within like 24hrs or so and they will tell you how much.

Federal Law... any lights on a car that are blue or red are considered illegal if it doesnt apply to a govenrment or medical auto transport vehicle. I dont know why you didnt follow this law it's pretty common to know this even before driving. Some people might have not been ticketed even when a cop is around, but if the cop needs some tickets cashed out and is having a bad day cops will get you for this. Especially when it's late at night and you have very bright blue lights on. Easy ticket. Sorry I dont know how much this ticked will cost you.

§treet_§peed
02-02-2010, 10:55 PM
Technically, you are supposed to have stock bulb not different than what is O.E.M. for your car/truck/bike. The only time this changed really was for cars that came stock with H.I.D. setups. You know, your more higher end cars and such.

Let me tell you this right now.....
HID "K" RATING DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH BRIGHTNESS (LUMENS). Light color has little to do brightness. Different types of light reflect off objects and colors differently. The common myth is that if white light is good, then adding blue is better because it "looks" brighter, but is in fact NOT BRIGHTER. The human eyes works best in the white light that comes from the sun...or somewhere in the 4100k to 5000k "range" that HID bulbs are available in. Traditional halogen bulbs are good for your eyes. If your car's lighting seems dull, buy new headlights and make sure you have proper voltage to your lights. To put things in easy to understand English... your eyes suck at processing blue/purple/violet light. Also, blue light does not cause your eye to dilate like white/yellow/red light does....which is why blue light looks even brighter and more distracting. Also, putting HIDs in reflector housings instantly makes you a ricer...right up there with ill-fitting body kits and F&F graphics.

If you want brighter bulbes, run a slightly higher wattage bulb. Running "cool blue" or Silver Star bulbs are a waste of time. Due to the way they make light "brighter" they shorten the life of the bulb...causing you to spend more money. To get a true increase in light output, either get a projector headlight kit and get 4k to 6k bulbs OR look into "HIR bulbs"...do a Google search for them and you'll see how awesome they are.

***Note
1) EGryder- This was not all directed toward you in a mean way. But more or less to everyone who thinks that question.

2) I don't really apologize for my post a few posts up. I've long since gotten tired of explaining this in nice and easy ways for people to understand. I'm even more frustrated with any moron that advertises/sells HID kits without properly educating people...even if that means losing sales.

MeFryRice
02-02-2010, 11:22 PM
I agree with Mike 100%.

Unless you have a projector headlamp (I'm assuming you don't based on the vehicles in your signature), running headlamps in a reflector style housing is a big no-no.

If I was a LEO, I'd be "that" guy everyone hates since I'd give everyone using an HID kit in a reflector housing a citation.

Yea the judge and DA all went out to his jeep and had him turn his lights on to show he changed them.

Yeah, that would be me! Ticket is a MINIMUM of $1100!! No shit, luckily i gave the lady(not sure exactly what she was) a good spill about being a broke college student with no previous tickets or any problems with the law. If i was you I would go to Walmart buy some new headlights, keep the receipt for court, so you can show the judge that you changed them immediately.

Good Luck!

10k is the highest I go. Anything beyond that is pointless.

It's not just the color as to why they gave you a ticket. Your headlights probably glare in every direction blinding other drivers and putting their lives in jeopardy b/c YOU want to look "cool."

GEORGIA CODE

*** Current through the 2009 Regular Session ***
TITLE 40. MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC
CHAPTER 8. EQUIPMENT AND INSPECTION OF MOTOR VEHICLES
ARTICLE 1. EQUIPMENT GENERALLY
PART 5. EQUIPMENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND EMERGENCY VEHICLES
O.C.G.A. § 40-8-90 (2009)

§ 40-8-90. Restrictions on use of blue lights on vehicles

(a)(1) Except as provided in this paragraph and subsection (b) of this Code section, it shall be unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation to operate any motor vehicle equipped with or containing a device capable of producing any blue lights, whether flashing, blinking, revolving, or stationary, except:

(A) Motor vehicles owned or leased by any federal, state, or local law enforcement agency;

(B) Motor vehicles with a permit granted by a state agency to bear such lights; or

(C) Antique, hobby, and special interest vehicles, as defined in subsection (a) of Code Section 40-2-77, which may display a blue light or lights of up to one inch in diameter as part of any such vehicle's rear stop lamps, rear turning indicator, rear hazard lamps, and rear reflectors.

(2) Any person who violates paragraph (1) of this subsection shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

(b) The prohibition contained in subsection (a) of this Code section shall not apply to any elected sheriff who, pursuant to an agreement between the sheriff and the county governing authority, is using his or her personal motor vehicle in a law enforcement activity, provided such vehicle is marked as provided in Code Section 40-8-91.

(c) It shall be unlawful for any person to use any motor vehicle equipped with flashing, blinking, revolving, or stationary blue lights in the commission of a felony, and, upon conviction of a violation of this subsection, the punishment shall be a fine of not less than $1,000.00 or imprisonment of not less than one year, or both.

HISTORY: Ga. L. 1966, p. 208, § 1; Ga. L. 1971, p. 781, § 1; Ga. L. 1972, p. 1092, § 1; Ga. L. 1977, p. 1012, § 1; Ga. L. 1984, p. 1193, § 1; Ga. L. 1985, p. 149, § 40; Ga. L. 1992, p. 1287, § 1; Ga. L. 2005, p. 1026, § 1/SB 178.

I'm not sure if it means that if you commit a felony while using blue lights thats the punishment or if you violate any part of this subsection of code that will be the fine, either way its probably going to be pretty steep. What is the exact code that you violated that the officer wrote on the ticket?
