Since there's a lot of traffic here and there's no section specifically for phone inquiries, I need answers from here. Any T-Mobile employees here?

First off, I just bought a Blackberry 8520 from T-Mobile. I avoided the required data plan by getting it through Wal-Mart with a lot of hassles and managerial overrides.... another story for later.

I came home and added my signal to the phone and used the internet for a while. then it stopped working and tells me i need a subscription(monthly payments). Later, I successfully connected to the internet again and using Hotspots or whatever.

My concern is that I want to use my WIFI coming from my HOME ROUTER on this blackberry WITHOUT getting charges from T-mobile behind my back saying "you're using it, so we'll just charge you" OR having to add a DATA PLAN costing too much per month/per year[s] because i dont need internet on the go.

now, HOW do I go about using wifi coming off of routers and such without having to pay any fees dealing with data plans/internet/etc except for my regular monthly plan and text?

Let's not assume any information because i assumed i could use wifi without being charged; however i've read that some guy was getting charged even though he didnt add the data plan. the thing was he's not in AMERICA.
....GREENS for useful info!

and down with the required Data Plans for the high end phones! Data plans for all smart phones ARE NOT like Engines to a car! Idiots from T-mobile said that!

... WHY would you get a blackberry WITHOUT a data plan??

You do realize that blackberry's dont function properly without the data plans, right? That's like buying an iPhone and using it as an iPod.

If t-mobile's server doesnt know you're using a Blackberry, none of your services are going to work correctly (wifi included) -- get on tmobile.com and make sure when you login it shows the blackberry. If it doesn't, choose the "this isnt my phone" option and select your phone. That sets all the properties correctly for your phone to work how it should, and if you REFUSE to get the data plan, wifi does not cost you anything. I think you can even use wifi if your account has been suspended.

did you know that the pearl 8120 came out a while before it required a data plan? grand scheme for money is how i see it.

your texts dont work properly, MMS doesnt work properly, no email, no internet, no apps, etc.

BB's are so much better with data.

i've received every text and mms. of course no internet because i dont have a data plan but i'm connected through wifi. i guess i'll wait til the bill comes to see if they "charge" anyways using wifi.

Most the time T-Mobile will feed you bullshit and make you buy all sorts of data plans. But BB's do need the data plan to work. There are much better options phone wise but really depends on how much you want to spend. Unlocked phones ftw.
