I drive everyday mostly on hwys and wondering, does spoiler really help on high speed?? like 60 or more??
I always felt spoilers are so rice but when I see circuit cars, they all have spoilers for downforce.
Anyone can help this?

i think they do if they are oem or certain height etc. porsche has a wing that comes up higher the faster you go so i would say yes. it kind of help keeps the backend down, esp on RWD cars.

ITS FOR HITTING CORNERS! (down force)
and you mean WING..

I put a wing on my rims for downforce

Theres a difference between a spoiler and a wing. they both provide downforce, but you dont need one on your street car. there is such a thing as too much downforce

Spoilers from factory are just for looks and generates more drag than anything, unless it's a pricier car (i.e. Porsche Carrera, Lotus Elise/Exige, Mercedes SLR, etc.) and the real advantage of downforce doesn't start until about 70-80 mph

they are great for pushing your junk out of the road after the neon's catch fire and burn the V tak up :D
Spoilers reduce drag, Wings create downfoce.
Spoilers, I would think, would work well at any speed to reduce drag off the back of the car.
Wings create downforce, grip for rear wheels. But I doubt it really helps until you reach like 120, which street cars rarely see. But. I like wings for looks lol

i have rode in 2 evo's at 140mph back to back. one with the factory wing, one without. the one with the wing felt more solid to the point where i noticed it.

I been 183 in a CTS-V.. hmmmm seems solid WITHOUT a wing.. But damn i had to change my diaper

Man, I have been at 150mph, without wing and it felt the car is not having any traction.

Spoilers create downforce such as...

Spoilers generally create stability by creating drag by design...some downforce, but mostly drag. What comes on an EVO or an STi or a Porsche 911 GT3 are NOT spoilers, those are wings. Spoilers mostly use one surface area for deflecting air.Think of a car with a parachute trailing behind it. Yes, that parachute is catching air and causing a lot of drag, but because of how the air is pulling on the attachment point/rear of car, it creates stability. A good example of this is the old style flap used on NASCARs (which were also used to reduce top speed). Most OEM spoilers are for asthetics though.

and largeer surface area for lower speeds..

Wings create downforce my using high and low pressure air currents along with a specified angle of attack (AOA). Much like we all know how an airplane wing works, a wing on a car will have air moving over and under it with adjustments made to the AOA for fine tuning. Notice in the picture below how you can see the fir deflect off the rear wing? Although it may look like a small change in angle, it creates a lot more force than you'd think. Also note how smooth the air is after the wing, that's minimal drag.

VS A computer model of a NASCAR's airflow with the older spoiler design. You can see how turbulent the air is behind the car. That's drag.

Wings and spoilers can be made to add downforce/stability at low speeds just as they can for high speeds, it all depends on AOA and surface area. I know several guys who autoX and use very large (8sq/ft per the rules) wings with high AOA (40+ degrees) and can make measurable differences at speeds under 60mph.
A good example of what it takes to create downforce at lower speeds. I dare you to tell these guys their spoilers look like rice...and while you're at it, try matching their times.
These designs actually create too much downforce/drag at higher speeds and would require a lot of power and a lot of front aerodynamics to balance out the rear.

good post. most of it has to do with the design of the wing or spoiler.
funny though the Sprint Cup racecars are faster with a spoiler than they are with a wing.

X2 and lambos. along with higher speeds. Wing/spoiler keeps your ass on the ground!

I have run my car at speeds of 180+. It had a wing on it before and was WAY more stable at speed.

I took mine off and threw it in the garage where it looks better :lmfao:
On a serious note, the car is very nervous at speed without it.
