my girlfriend has a subaru forester, not sure what year, but it's at least a good few years old. around 120k miles on this engine, 170k miles on body, with a recently built transmission.

the car is now whining as the car accelerates, and the whine grows louder the faster the car is going. The whine goes away when you take your foot off the gas pedal, and the sound also seems more related to the speed of the car and not the engine rpm's, as when you gun it, and it downshifts, the speed still grows at a normal rate with the speed. Any idea on what this could be?

you should prolly get the transfer case checked out, pretty sure the foresters are awd ,but could be a differentail, or still could be transmission

death whine refers to bad whine before transfer case goes out, but ive heard of people sayin death whines coming from turbo before it went bad, so honestly its something i would get looked at. hope i pointed ya in right direction gl

She might be the victim of one of the popular FI pranks that have been going on lately. I bet thats what it is. Some punks probably broke into her car while she was asleep and installed a supercharger. Ha! Take that! They got her goooood.
