View Full Version : √ IA car photography enthusiasts come inside.

Mr. Clean
01-19-2010, 08:42 PM
Now please don't get me wrong. There are beginning photographers, and there are people that should be burnt when a camera touches their fingers. Due to the fact that IA has been inundated with horrible CAR PICS threads, I feel the need to be reminded that IA still has what it takes to get me through the cold nights. The digital camera age seems to have given everyone and their mother the idea that anyone can be a photographer. We all know that this is a gross over-estimation, and it will eventually lead to the downfall of the internet as we know it. So all you mofos that take respectable pictures, please take the time to post up a couple of your all time favorite pictures. This is really a moral thread. Please participate... you know who you are.

Couple of my fave older shots...

Although you take decent pics, Mr. Clean. They are not amazing. There are plenty of people on this site that take good pics. I understand where your coming from when people post crappy pics, I don't understand why you sit back and judge them. Anyways +reps for having a really good looking Del Sol. :goodjob:

it's not about that. i, by no means, think my shit doesn't stink. but being realistic, one can obviously see that there has been a major decrease in the amt of quality threads being posted recently. i get down on my pictures constantly, and then i come to IA or H-T to try and find some inspiration. but the problem is that lately, there is really no inspiration. this is not a thread to try and convince people that i'm awesome. it's just to get the people who actually try and improve on their work to post up. i thank you for going about that comment tactfully though lol. you certainly could have said you suck, i'm out. point taken. i secretly just wanted changaroo to post a thread of awesome pics to make me feel better, but he's too modest and wouldn't do it. so i had to do it my damn self.

and as far as my criticism, at the risk of sounding even more like a douchebag... i know a good picture when i see it. while i can't usually take those stunning shots, i do know my way around a camera and it's elements. it's just in my nature to critique because i genuinely LOVE it when people do the same to my work. i want to know what people like and dislike, and i kind of just assume people want the truth. if a picture is simply ridiculous then i don't care about being coy, but if i can tell that the photog will actually take the criticism and put it to use, i will give them an honest critique. anyone on here who knows me personally knows how i am. i respect and encourage those who deserve it.

thread is rollin. keep em coming.

I look at pictures hourly, daily, and all day....and it has always been pictures that just show a good scene, that do it.. post processing has its place, but a good shot is a good shot before and after..

When you take a picture of a car we want to see the car..not what tricks you can do with the camera. Coordinate colors, a good background, action

people on IA only know "big" names because they post their shit up every day. of course they get recognized when people continuously see their threads. its called repetition... repetition of shit lol.

Dirty Octopus™
01-19-2010, 10:35 PM
i thought this would be a fabulous thread until i saw certain shots... just because you "think" its a good shot doesnt make it a good photograph. I believe this thread was intended to display photos that are awe inspiring or close to it. Photos that are deemed good to the general public usually were the result of a photographer putting forth an effort in expressing his/her point of view in the picture. Simply taking a picture with a DSLR on Auto does NOT make it a good shot. Dont be so dense to think that subpar pictures can be put in the same category as epic pictures just because you "liked" the shot. We all KNOW what Mr. Clean was going for in this thread so lets please keep the pictures on a level plane and continue to post EXCEPTIONAL shots.

Clean was going for in this thread so lets please keep the pictures on a level plane and continue to post EXCEPTIONAL shots.

im not sure if this was intended towards me or not and if it was, so be it. a good shot is up to the viewers digression.

im not sure if it was either but a good shot is not up to a viewers "digression".
A good shot is deemed a good shot because... to state it simply... its pretty :D

Even a child can tell whether or not a shot has what it takes to please the eyes or all the senses for that matter

just because its pretty doesnt mean its a good shot. just because the cars nice looking doesnt mean its a good shot. you could have one person say a shot is fucking awesome, the angles awesome, colors awesome and then there is that other person or few people that says that the angle doesnt do anything for em, its the same car just a diff color, and the colors are to stand outish. so i honestly dont believe that.

Pretty is not soley attributed to color. Pretty was a very broad layman's term used to describe everything that embodies a "good shot". See thats the same kind of thinking we dont need. One that cannot interpret the broad meaning of the word pretty wouldnt have an easy time recognizing a "good shot".
But look... this is not about you. Lets take the attention off of the conversation that you and i are having and let us sit back and absorb the goodness that this thread is capable of producing.

I see some good pics and some okay pics in here.

Btw, are we limited to IA's only pic, meaning taken by IA members? If it's about inspiration and there are tons and tons of pics. I recommend that we stick only by IA members who take good pics.

Speaking of which, here's couple randomly selected shots from one of my favorite all time photog.

Great thread idea justin. Even tho some say you critique too hard ( like my set of photos when i first used strobes u son of a bitch lol) constructive criticism is the only way we as photographers can get better. Everyone has their own taste/style. some like the HDR, some like high ISO looking shots. there are many great photographers on here ( yourself, chang, Chad, Bandy, EJ allmota, uproot, geoff, ect) and i think we all bring a certain style to the table.

anyway CC on! here is my contribution.

Ok, I don't think I'm on the level of really respectable photos yet, but I do think I have 1 or 2 that do fit in with the better photographers on here. These 2 are my favorite, the rest lack the "wow" that these have.

(and yes, the car is supposed to be blurry with the cone in focus, everyone's seen that car, that picture is more about the atmosphere of the drift event than the car itself)

And PLEASE do feel free to CC these, even if harshly, I am all about improving.

I'm with ya 100%. I quit using my tripod a long time ago because it can't get the angles I want, and so I have to compensate sometimes with my exposure. It usually ends up with a shot without the perfect exposure. I think a tripod is a must have for still photography. Especially so you can get multiple exposures for one shot and compose the perfect shot with some layering.

I'm with ya 100%. I quit using my tripod a long time ago because it can't get the angles I want, and so I have to compensate sometimes with my exposure. It usually ends up with a shot without the perfect exposure. I think a tripod is a must have for still photography. Especially so you can get multiple exposures for one shot and compose the perfect shot with some layering.
i ALWAYS shoot on a tripod. you might be able to tell from my repetitive angles :( at the same time i can very rarely get a photo that im even halfass happy with if i dont do multiple exposures. most of my photographs are 5-8 exposures stitched into one photo for different lighting set-ups and a different twist of the CPL to get rid of more reflections.

If you blame your lack of skill on lack of gear, you'll never get better.

(speaking from experience)
fawking truth. my sig on all photography forums is....

"TRYING TO MAKE UP FOR MY LACK OF EQUIPMENT WITH TALENT"

i have a $750 camera body, a $100 nikon 50mm 1.8 lens, a $200 nikon 35mm 1.8 lens and a $450 sigma 10-20 lens and a novatron lighting set from the mid 1980's that my grand father gave to me.

lack of gear isnt always the problem, alot of times its lack of a photography knowledge and skill from the person using that gear.

The only problem with this thread is that if you want to look for inspiration you should go to a PHOTOGRAPHY site to begin with.

This site is full of people that post "great pics", "awesome shots", or "love the pics" when in reality they are not much of any of those descriptions at all. It's a false sense of greatness. Not taking anything away from the ones that truly have talent, but if we're being honest this is by far not the site to get your photographic tips from.

Go to a true photography forum and post up some of the pics posted up in this very thread, and you will see what a humbling experience that is.

Merely coming up with a catchy watermark, putting a border on the pic, or worse......using crazy contorting angles to seem cool does not a photographer make anyone.

that is waht makes "art" so great.. everyone has a different like, and view of things, and gets different inspiration. So your appreciation for the guys on the photography site..is what give you inspiration. But it may not work for everyone... see how that works! Its like telling someone how to think, or how to feel about something... its impossible!

alot of people here dont understand photography like the people on those forums. people here cant pin point why they like X photo over Y photo so they cant reproduce the quality of X photo.

example...

i see alot of photos from people that have been doing photography for a few months or longer(IM NOT AN OG! lol) and there is less space between the front bumper of the car and the end of the "frame" than the rear bumper of the car and the end of the "frame". this looks alot worse than if it was the other way around. do you know why? its because the human eye is used to seeing a automobile in motion, and you you take a picture of a car that way subconsciously you "feel" like the car is trapped in the frame and has no where to go. i know that seams really out there for some people but its the truth. being a good photographer is learning what is visually appealing to the human eye and why it is that way.

import atlanta, honda-tech and my350z is a place to learn about cars, not photography. a lot of photographers(like me) will not give REAL critiques on car forums because they have had bad experiences with people getting buthurt cause we were "mean" and "think our shit doesnt stink". if you dont know what your doing wrong you cant ever fix it.

the only reason i have progressed like i have(i still suck, but have made decent progression) is because of me posting on photography forums and telling me to rip my photos to shit, be blunt, be assholes, smack my ass and call me nancy. blunt, harsh criticism is the best way to get better at photography and you arent going to get that on a car forum.

One thing I must say that can make or break an automotive picture is not even the photographers skill or equipment, it comes down to the subject(car) and the scenery of which the car is in. For example when someone posts pics of a 92 integra, the shots might be good and the car might be "clean" by his standards but it's still relatively boring. Why? Because the subject sucks. It's like looking at a "good" picture of an ugly old woman. Also, I have seen decent quality pictures taken in breathtaking scenery such as mountains etc... and the pictures take my breath away with how nice they are. Honestly living in GA, I find nice scenery for automotive photography extremely lacking. It's pretty hard to take great pics with a lack of good backdrops and such imo

My definition of a good picture is one that makes me say "wow!"

We (non picture takers just lookers) just want to see cool pictures. And photography is art, much like music, and its all optical, its whats pleasing to the eye. Some people may hate changaroos dark style of pics, and some may love it. Just like some may hate cahdbee's style, but love blacknightteg's driveway portrait. Just because its simple and straight to the point and gets the point across. Like you have people who make music on the most sophisticated electronics every made, but it never sounds as good as fined tuned instrument. Granted there is a science to it all..but it all comes down to expression and what makes the eye happy.

Car photography has gotten like this because of the internet. The only place were you can become a well known person because of 1 photo taken in your driveway, with a 75$ camera.

And criticisms is all good, when it comes to knowing how to work your camera, and what settings to use in certain conditions. but other than that its all skill and time. Noone on the forums can teach you to have an eye for a nice picture, its like alot of things some people got it and some people dont.

Some of my favorite photographers are magic with the PS, but the better ones are magic behind the camera... when you see a good picture, the last thing you think about is the post processing.

i agree for the most part but alot of people say i have a good eye to properly compose a photo and i learned that from studying composition techniques that i found on photography forums. if you just "had an eye for it" all you would have to do is buy a decent camera, read the manual to learn the settings then produce amazing shots. some people learn fast, some people learn slow, some people just cant wrap their minds around it and then give up but everybody has to learn and all im saying is if you truly want to produce good photography the best option is to be around people that are professionals. over the past year my photos have sucked alot less, they still arent what i call good but they are better and one of the main reasons is because i have a friend that shoots for import tuner, performance auto and sound and a few other magazines constantly pit picking the fuck out of my photos and helping me with my rig set-up, my editing and pushing me to get better. if i would have stuck to IA and car forums i can promise you my work would suck alot more than it does right now.

Not the subject or composition or lighting or background...the only thing appealing is the f/stop?

that is waht makes "art" so great.. everyone has a different like, and view of things, and gets different inspiration.

So you're wanting to argue with my opinion that IA is not the best place for "inspiration" in photography??? Okie dokie. :goodjob:

So your appreciation for the guys on the photography site..is what give you inspiration. But it may not work for everyone... see how that works! Its like telling someone how to think, or how to feel about something... its impossible!

I don't need any inspiration at all. The OP did. Again, if you want to argue with me that THIS.....IA....is THE place to get inspired by the photography being posted, then I say that you are not well versed on what a good picture is since it seems just about every day someone posts a bad picture and all the nutswingers call it "great". That's a false positive. If you guys want to stick your head in the sand and say it's "art" or "cool to you", then fine. But if you truly want inspiration, then go to where there are better people than you, not worse.

Just a couple of pictures I took that I thought were not that bad. Like i said, I'm not a pro, don't pretend to be, and definitley not a a critic of anyones work. I find it more difficult to get a good picture of a "model", be it car, animal or what, than I do a scenic shot.

The beauty of digital. I can shoot all I want, figure out what small things work, and make notes as I go along. I don't put a lot of thought into it. But I welcome advice and suggestions.

SLR, 35mm, disposable, cell phone camera, point & shoot, DSLR, etc. doesn't matter when it comes to composition. The subject doesn't even matter when it comes to composition...even though the S2000 with a hardtop is one of the sexiest cars built in the past decade.

What were the settings? I'm curious what the body was too, something killed the image quality to where I can't even find the focus point on the second shot. Almost seems like it was post processing or the way the image was saved more than the camera though.

I know what you mean about composition. There is a guy out there I saw that is making world class art using his cell phone.

Car shots will almost always look better if they are lower in the frame...like in-line with the lower 1/3rd. It prevents the "center syndrome". Also holding the camera lower than eye level will always prevent a shot from looking like a thumbnail in a Autotrader, giving the car a more aggressive and attractive stance. How low to go depends how close to the car the camera is and what focal length OR go the other way and get really high looking down. Eye level shots are almost always unattractive...unless you're a 3' tall midget.

Honestly, I like the challenge of taking pictures. I enjoy trying to accomplish an idea...but I know my place (not going to quit my day job to take pics lol) and that what I'm doing is for my own personal satisfaction. Hell, I don't even use a DSLR, but I like that challenge just as much. I would post more pics, but I'm already under the impression that I'm just going to be another guy post average pics. So unless I feel really proud of a shot, I don't bother posting. Personally, I feel like I know that I'm looking at and what makes the difference between a generic, plain shot and one that captivates FWIW.

With that said, there are some of the ones I do feel good about.....though I've never really had the "Big Shots" here give me much feedback....so....

Let's make this happen. I need to be un-depressed.

Great shots of okay/average cars is no better than bad pics of great cars.

Just start by using your phone, you'll be sure to get a lof "nice pic" comments by posting them on here. O make sure to take the pics in your driveway, while standing 6ft away from the driver's front of the car...and do it at night so you get that really cool "old picture" quality :goodjob:

Jason? Chad? Eric?Bingo. Cameras are just boxes that gather light and record the info. That shot with a Canon p&s is better than most of the statics posted here with a DSLR. A big DSLR only gets you harassment when out in the field anyways.

In my opinion, lighting is the number 1 most important factor. Knowing how to adjust the camera according to the lighting is 2nd. Then composing the shot is 3rd.

You've been with me when we're waiting for that perfect 5-10 minute window for the sun to go behind the horizon using the sky as a giant reflector. Too early and you have harsh spots on the car, too late and the car will look dull and flat.

Regarding that photo, I would edit out the trash that's directly in front of the drivers door then crop an inch from the bottom and right sides so the car isn't centered...

I went back and cleaned up my original large pics now :)The clone stamp works wonders for cleaning up random trash.

With the high resolution cameras (8mp+) tightening up the subject in a frame isn't as important...you can simply crop it how you want in post processing and still have a crisp subject.

The lighting is perfect on that shot though! :goodjob:

I don't know why you find it necessary to continue to argue with my opinion, which based on the very next posts right after me confirmed I'm not the only one that feels that way anyway.

Look, all I'm saying is this: If you're an Attorney, do you get to be a "better" Attorney by only trying easy cases or diving into the hard ones? Ever see the ovie "A Few Good Men"? Yes, you may be the best at ambulance chasing, but you'll never be a "serious" top of the line one until you litigate. Know what I mean?

On IA, far too often people like to take pics of their cars right after they wash it or when they find an empty warehouse parking lot. Nothing wrong with that IF the rest of the picture fit properly. As Jason already pointed out, composition, lighting, and clarity go a long way to making a picture appealing. A driveway with trash cans in the open garage background is not proper composition in any book. So let's stop going around saying that it is, let alone using it as any "inspiration" to anyone.

My point is that IA has a nasty habit of people calling some pics "nice" when they truly aren't. Therefore if the OP wants "inspiration", IA is slim pickings. Now, if he wants some to truly push his skill level UP, then he has to go where the photogs are BETTER than he is in order to do that. There are very few true great photogs on IA, and out of those most don't even post their work on a regular basis. There again, another reason why I stand by MY OPINION that for the purposes of inspiration and getting better at photography this is not the optimal site. To read drama and keep up with friends, yes....photography, no. Yes, there are guys on here that truly know their stuff. If you can get lucky and get them to give you some help, then you're good.

This is just my opinion, so no need to try and start any arguments about it. It is what it is. You don't have to agree. That's fine with me. No skin off my back at all. :goodjob:

"AINT" NOBODY ARGUING WITH YOUR OPINION MAN

i just said, you can get INSPIRATION and MOTIVATION which is what this thread is about from anywhere it doesnt have to be on a photo forum. And you said that if you get motivation from anywhere but a photgraphy site than you have no eye for good photography...which is out there. Im sure justin is full aware of photography forums.

When did i say anything about IA being the judge and jury on good pics. I rarely learn anything on ia... like i said you can learn the mechanics on a forum and learn what to do to process a good photo, and to capture it, but you can gain motivation comes from everywhere.

Dude, take a Midol and change your tampon.

Good grief. Whatever dude, you win. IA pics = great inspiration.....

Yall have fun in your thread. :goodjob:

NSPGot any better examples? Other than the subjects, I see nothing appealing about any of the photos other than the b&w rolling shot of the pickup in the previous post.

lol, I do apologize for my tardiness but im here now.. I was feeling the idea of this thread quite a great deal but it does not seem to be going in the right direction.. There are quite a great deal of excellent photographers on here and they know who they are even though they are quite modest at times.. Chang, Mr. Clean, Kamikaze (underrated), Uproot, .blank_cd, and Ch@dbee just to name a few..

On that note here is some of my work:

you should seriously work on reading comprehension and or get an alzheimers evaluation.

"You" should be capitalized, there should be "/" between and or, and "Alzheimer" should both be capitalized as well as an apostrophe. I guess your High School edumacation was uber cool pimptastic....

Reading comprehension is not an issue with me, Richard. Your continuation to TRY and prove your penis size to me is. Now, just let it go. I told you that you "won" your little e-piss contest. Isn't that what you wanted? Cool, then you got it. :goodjob:

You're not going to change my mind nor my opinion, so give it up already. Go back to post whoring and repping your little girlfriends back and forth. :goodjob::rolleyes:

everytime someone replies to you, you like to turn it into a battle or argument, i just made a comment onto what you said. And you turn it into a battle/argument. i dont argue or battle on ia.... you instantly turned into a argument for no reason, instead of reading what i typed. its like you didnt even read it, just replied with some a random penis and pissing comments..... i know your smart so i wont call you retarded, so my second thought was alzheimers..and you confirmed once again...

I typed this nice little response, but I've changed my mind and am simply going to say this:

STFU already, seriously. I never said shit to you in the first place, yet you found it necessary to try and somehow try and correct MY opinion. You're not going to, so give it up already. MY opinion is MY opinion. Leave it at that and leave me the fuck alone already.

Don't say one more thing back to me in this thread, or I'm closing this thread for good. Let people opinionate and move on. I'm certain the OP didn't want some e-battle over this, yet you want to continue it for some reason. I already told you that if it makes you feel better that I'd let you "win" and think whatever the fuck you want to think about IA pics. Make you happy? You complete now? Let it the fuck go already.

i wont stop, just because you say so.. just because you have such a bitch ass attittude. Im not trying to change your opinion, but the disrespectful way you go about speaking to me annoys the shit out of me, like you got an angry chip on your shoulder, and you are responding to things that i didnt even say in my replies, like you are arguing with yourself. You do the same thing to everyone in any topic.. so do what you got to do...the thread is dead anyway, its just me and you!
