View Full Version : T2 Swap

I figured the other thread had run its course. Since I have decided to start to RX7 now and decided on a T2 conversion, I am gathering up parts and stuff to get the car completed. I was able to pick up a set of Speedline Corsa wheels for the car. I went up to the car today (It's in Gainesville right now, I am bringing it Kennesaw the weekend of the 13th), and put the new wheels and tires on it. That alone made a big difference.

Pics are below:

No that was the rain and a pressure washer. :)

i know. atleast it has matching rims now. hows the interior looking?

If you're interested I've got a S4 T2 swap going up for sale as soon as I pull it out of my vert. To run in an S5 I think you're going to need the S5front cover and oil pump unless you decide to run premix(chime in here Kain for clarification)

Yeah the wheels that were on it, well two were old skool toyota sawblades, the other two were spare tire wheels. Interior is a little rough, Dash and console is excellent, the rear carpet is excellent, door panels are excellent, but are grey (I want black) seats are rough and cockpit carpet is rough.

Should come alone. I was thinking doing to doors and seats in black leather with red stictching.

totally doable, but not needed. just premix, or leave the s5 omp hanging by the harness and geet the s4 unit in there and working.

but the s5 requires the omp. limp mode will be induced sans omp.

I'm weighing my options on this engine and the S5 I have my sights on. I have a few things to look at with both. So I will have to see.

the s5 is also beefier. especially in the rear iron. the s4? not so much. but still 400 whp capable.

never thought of that because the s4 is mechanical versus the electric S5 right? This one is in working order so I suppose just leaving the S5 hanging at the harness wouldn't be a bad option.
Both engines are capable of pretty much the same power. The advantages of going with the S5 is mainly in the stock turbo.(wastegate is larger for boost creep and the they ditched the stupid twinscroll) The turbo on the motor I'm selling has the wastegate ported and the flapper for the twin scroll is locked in open position BTW. Do your research but hopefully you pick up my motor. Either way you'll be getting a good one because Japan2La sales great motors.

Part of my problem too is regardless I need a new wiring harness. My car sat for years before I got it from the PO. In that time, critters of some type managed to get and chew through the harness in at least 3 different places (that's is from what I can see from the engine bay, it may be more. So to me I will need a harness regardless of which way I go.

whatever you do get a N/A harness...much easier to adapt to the car than the T2 harness

Justin51982

I could see that to be true I think. Hopefully, regardless of what I end up chosing to do, I will get some help on the car. I am stoked to get this thing back on the road.

the block? the rear iron doesnt crack. people make 800 wheel hp in those, but thats with new studs and other mods to reinforce it. the s4 iron cracks in a certain spot as the engine wants to twist, it cracks. not bad, but still, enough to piss you off and have to remove the iron. still... 450 or 500 wheel hp till it cracks is pretty safe for daily driving.

the harness is chewed? remove the NA harness and see how much of the actual chassis and other harnesses are actually chewed.if the chasis harness is chewed, then that can be rebuilt and not worried about.

the difference between s4 and s5 t2 engines is a lot. the s4 has lower compression rotors, crap turbo and crap waste gate, and the intake is on the small side. not to mention the s4 rear iron. also, the spark plug locations on the s4 vs the s5 rotor housings are slightly different. s5 is basically the better engine hands down. turbo is better (compressor wheel is better with a better waste gate in the turbine housing ), rotors are higher compression, the iron doesn't crack, and the intake manifold has huge ports.

as i have suggested many times over and over, just ditch the stock electronics man. new wiring harness with new clips is SO nice to have. especially when they dont break when the wind blows wrong.

Wow, you are very knowledgeable, and I appreciate the help and the advice. The S5 engine will come with a new harness, so that might be the safe bet. It sounds like the S5 might be the way to go, especially if I have future plans to add more power to the car. I am grabbing the car from my mom's the weekend of the 13th, next month. That being said. As soon as it get's here, I will try to find an engine hoist to use, or buy, pull the engine and see how bad the damage is to the rest of the harnesses. I also have to pull all carpeting out of the car too for either cleaning or replacement, so it might be pretty easy for me to re-route a new harness anyway. As I said before I might ask you to come by to get your input.

I thought the intake manifold having the larger ports was only for the N/A....learn something new everyday. Everything said is very true except for I've never really heard of problems with the rear iron cracking under high HP conditions...Guess I need to start doing my own research.
When you get ready to do the swap I'll lend a hand too

this is what happens when you abuse an s4 engine. is the dowel pin right at the oil filter pedestal. the s5 turbo engine has thicker material around this area.

the intake ports are the same, the runners and the runner diameter for the intake manifold is different.

hmm so I guess the question would be are you "going" to run 400whp? wanting to and actually doing it are 2 different things. At that point you can't run the stock turbo or even a BNR stage 4 and reach that power. well in one case I've read about it done on a stage4 but that was on a streetport. Japan2La hooked is hooking up with a great price right?

its even been done with stock 3rd gen twins. 400 wheel hp isnt realy that hard to accomplish.

dude... rx7's are great because you are not limited by much. hell... there are people making 200+whp from turbo engines with no turbo and some porting. thats impressive.

one 1st gen member has a 13b re in his car and its making 230 rear wheel hp. no turbo, just some choice mods, porting, and a great tune.

Rotarys can run on as low as 70 octane without boost.

Not to my knowledge, the wiring harnesses are all messed up and the car has 160K on it. Also, someone switched the S5 Manifold with an S4. So instead of attempting to get it right I decided to go with the swap.
