Body art and deviant behavior: Study finds link between multiple tattoos, piercings and trouble
Here's a new aphorism: "The more body art you have, the more likely you are to be involved in deviance."
So says Jerome Koch, a sociologist with Texas Tech University's "Body Art Team" -- true moniker -- which surveyed 1,753 students at four colleges and found a correlation between multiple tattoos or piercings and "deviant behavior."
The severally inked or poked at the unnamed Midwestern and Southern colleges said they engaged in, roughly speaking, more promiscuity, more drug use, more binge drinking, more arrests and more cheating on academics than their peers.
The research team has been studying tattoos and piercing since 1999; its latest study will be printed in The Social Science Journal in March and was first reported in Miller-McCune magazine, which tracks academic research.
But the new data also suggest parents needn't freak about a lone dolphin (14 percent of surveyed students had a tattoo) or a belly-button ring (37 percent had a body piercing). "For low-level body art, these kids are not any different from anybody else."
The correlation with deviant behavior came among the 4 percent of students who had four or more tattoos, seven or more piercings, or one "intimate piercing," said Koch. Over at Taylor Street Tattoo, close to the University of Illinois at Chicago (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/education/colleges-universities/university-of-illinois-at-chicago-OREDU0000154.topic)'s Near West Side (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/us/illinois/cook-county/chicago/near-west-side-PLGEO100100806010794.topic) campus, owner Timothy Gooding stood up for his clients.
"The people I see on a regular basis that get tattooed are some of the nicest, most well-mannered people," Gooding said. "I see college kids, screaming, yelling, fighting on a regular basis. Those are not my kids."
Koch doesn't necessarily disagree. He says what the study really demonstrates is how body art going mainstream has upped the ante for those who would treat it as more of a subculture.

Its crazy how people are so quick to judge people just because they dont agree on what they think is "different"
Its like "Hey I have a tattoo or gauges in my ear, now I'm gonna whoop your ass"

Everyone's different...successful serial killers (not condoning killing) are the ones that BLEND into society, they're usually the kind and normal looking "good" neighbors, "friends" etc... not usually the tatted up peirced up looking people, that way they DON'T stick out...

surveyed over 1700 students over 4 colleges and thats what the stats showed so why so retarded?
maybe a little weird to try and prove the correlation bw the 2 but thats what the facts showed so it is what it is. at least bw those 4 colleges.
this doesnt mean if you have more than 4 tats now you are apart of the deviant behavior group but for 4% it proved to be so...
and its "ratarded" :D

So basically because of their own personal actions (having nothing to do with tattoos or piercings) puts them in a category JUST because they do?

It's just stereotyping. And frankly, 99% of inked people or people with odd piercings get themselves into trouble, or "do deviant things". Now some of you who are goody goody, and just like the look, and don't do deviant things, you're choosing to be put in the class of all the other deviant individuals, because you look like them. Don't like it? Change it.

lol im by far no goody goody. The point of the thread was stereotyping. You can by no means blame tattoos or piercings on someones own personal behavior

of course not, and that's not what this guy was doing. He just surveyed and found an obvious relation between the two. Also, "deviant" does not mean being a serial murderer. It could be vandalism or a number of any CRIMES. This guy didn't state "you got tattoo's and piercings? you're a criminal" He just said, that there seems to be a correlation between the two.

woww really? i have 3 piercings and one tattoo with more to come. does this mean im going to be more of a deviant then than i am now when i get those other tattoos?
so the 1700 students studied from 4 colleges decide that the more tattoos or piercings a person has the more deviant they are more likely to be? what about the remaining hundreds of thousands of students from the other thousands of colleges? their sample population is not even big enough to cover a minute percentage of the remaining population. let alone make that presumption.

ok back to serious: your post says ""So says Jerome Koch, a sociologist with Texas Tech University's "Body Art Team" -- true moniker -- which surveyed 1,753 students at four colleges and found a correlation between multiple tattoos or piercings and "deviant behavior.""
it wasnt 1700 tatooed people.

what? their study population was not large enough to even make conclusions like that. and the 4% stated in the article is the percentage of students with 4 or more tattoos. not the ones who are more deviant because of the number of tattoos.
idk. maybe im only making sense in my head. lol

This isn't the end all be all factoid of the fucking century. It's the results from HIS personal surveys of the students in which he could contact. Sadly, I bet he would find these same typical responses in just about any state/school he went to. When you do certain things to yourself, you choose to look a certain way, you have to accept that society is going to view you a certain way. That will never change. And like I told scion bitch or whatever her name is, looking like a regular GIRL, and dressing like a regular girl, with a few regular piercings and the obvious tattoo that pretty much every 18 girl gets now, doesn't classify you in this. He's clearly talking tattoo's in obvious places that people can see at all times, and piercings that are out of place, on your lip, nose hook, etc etc. Obviously a girl with a tramp stamp and 3 piercings in each ear and a belly button piercing is not personified by this survey.

I have a tattoo and plan on a lot more. Even thought about becoming a tattoo artist. Had my lip pierced also before it became the cool thing for kids. Sure I was a deviant but before I ever had a tattoo, and only for the means of survival ( I only stole food). I think they just made a statistic and steered it the way they wanted it to go. Manipulation is key.

Of course you do, because you "fit" this stereotype.
When asked this question, the first type of person that pops into their head is someone with odd placed piercings and tattoo's everywhere.

like that guy.

or that guy.
of course these are extreme examples, but this is the stereotype that people think of when questioned "hey do you think people with multiple visible piercings and tattoo's are more likely to cause trouble?"

haha no problem. why get so bent out of shape over something on the internet, yah know? :)
but yeah, honestly i dont care what people think of me because of my piercings and tattoos. i love them. like bowdown said, its more about the sterotyping people based on something so minscule as tattoos and piercings.

clearly. however look at it this way, as a man, if i see a girl with a tattoo on the lower back, it might as well be a bullseye. That's why it's called a "Tramp stamp". This is the same thing. Stereotyping, and EVERYONE is guilty of it, in one way or another.
