Sup fockers!
I picked up another 1911 project. It hasnt made it to my door just yet. Should go in the mail on thursday and be on my door sometime on saturday or monday. I have been SEARCHING FOR A LONG time to find something that would be a good project to start with and not to much cost up front. I had one like this in stainless before and loved it. I sold it because I wanted one with an alloy frame. I bought it and sold it. Needless to say. I wanted another so here it is:
Springfield Armory 1911 Champion .45 ACP.
List of goodies the previous owner told me it has:
-Full Length Recoil Guide Rod
-Vioecki Trigger
-Custom Night Sights
-Extended Beavertail Grip Safety
-Extender Slide Release
-Commander Hammer
-Flat Checkered Main Spring Housing
-Lowered & Flared Ejection Port
ALOT of these parts will be coming off in order to replace and refit more parts. I already have a match barrel for it I have been holding on to for a while. I will not fit it until i get the rest of the gun where i want it. Here are some pics from the ad. These list for about $650-700.

pretty cool man. cheap too! Think the tangs will have to be welded up to achieve a good beavertail fit? Those sights are pretty crazy too. Cant wait to see what ya do to her!
Truegiant

You mean you cant wait to see what your going to do to her.. haha..
I told you grasshopper.. you need practice.
When I get it in I will check it over fully and inspect what needs to be done.

Truegiant
01-11-2010, 07:06 PM
I am thinking about it. Bobtail, more cocking serrations, checkering front strap, under trigger housing, and of course some more goodies. Refit a beavertail, smoothed mag chute, hmm.. much more of course.

i dig the polished flats too. I would love a stainless as my next build. I need to find out what media they use to blast the rounds that gives it the dark finish. Alox. maybe?

so what model is this thing exactly. Its quite strange in comparison to springfields current model line up. The dust cover looks like those from the early 90's springfields. any idea what year she is?

build thread please!! how do you get a gun shipped to your door? in parts?? i always thought u had to have it shipped to a local gun shop or something
Truegiant
01-12-2010, 11:43 AM
I am not sure the model year. I didnt even ask for a serial number to be honest. I didnt notice that many difference between this model and my early 2000 model stainless I owned before.
There will be a build thread for sure. I am thinking about switching back to checkering instead of scalloping? Not sure. I am putting together a huge list. First thing that will happen is taking it out and shooting it of course. Then I am going to just order a couple of small items here and there. Once I get her shooting like I like I will send it off for all ergonomic and cosmetic goodies.

I am trying to get some business models together for some up and coming ideas! Gonna be an on and off project!

I spent three hours typing up business proposals and info for my businesspartner. Now I have to draw up some site plans and do some more price shopping for the business and I think we will be set there.
I am working on picking up another truck. I have been looking for a nice reg cab dually turbo diesel setup but havent had any luck. There are a bunch of good deals out there but not one that is in my price range. I think I have found a nice little daily driver truck. A early 80's toyota 4x4. Its in decent shape and has had alot of recent service. The guy is interested in trading for my custom .17 and some cash so that will help cut costs down. I still have my trailer and a couple of other "goodies" i need to sell before i can start ordering parts for my new 1911 project. I have not had time to put a list of parts together yet.
Danny - have you started looking into finding a champion? if you find a nice lightweight around the same price pick it up and we can swap. once i get it in and start messing with the barrel and frame/slide i will send it up to you with the other goodies for a blasting. start putting a potential list together for your next project also that we talked about. I mentioned to my Business partner today about how we could squeeze another team mate into the mix. We still have alot of talking about it to do.

More money for the gun fund i guess.

I like the checkering alot. I was actually doing research on those sights last night pretty late in the evening. Your eyes supposedly can see the site better because it takes in the little bit of depth perception to focus on both the front and rear siight. Anywho.. that might not make sense. i will go and find the site again on these sights.
I think I want to bevel my slide as well. I have never had one done that way. I love the flat top cut on top as well. Oh and those grips are sex!
I like the subdle accents of polished parts on the gun. Breaks up the contrast alot. I am trying to decide if i want to build a fighting gun out of this one or a nicer looking carry gun???
I just dont want to go to overboard and be dissapointed with how much i spend.
Danny
01-14-2010, 04:01 PM
are those larry davidson grips ya think?
Looks like you need to buy a mill, so u can flat top the top side and chamfer the bottom of the slide.

I am working a deal on another nice champion for cheaper than what i got mine for. Guy wants to keep his grips and sights so that helps out alot on price!
Anywho.. I will keep you informed.
I think I am going to keep this one moderately priced and build a nice Colt Delta Elite 10mm stainless for a BBQ gun. Anyone know where one is for a good price thats willing to do some trading?

Sounds like fun. I woke up at 6am today and drove to south carolina to pick up a truck. The truck was almost all the way to charleston. I will snap some pics tomorrow. Its a serious beater but it was a good price and had alot of recent work done to it. Going to slap a coat of paint on it, clean up some wiring problems were they hacked up the lights for the towing, clean up the inside, and drive it.
Got a couple of more loose ends to tie up and then progress is going to be made on the business ventures. I am supposed to meet the guy with the lightweight tuesday so we will see on that. I am going to pikc up the champion tomorrow.

no its aluminum. I was using it for a reference piece.
Kimber used to stand for a good name. They used to have all hand fit parts like some of the big name guys. They switched all of there production except for a few out of there custom shop to MIM parts. There custom service dept went to shit. Realistically I suppose since i only need the slide/frame/barrel/and a few other components it would turn into a custom build anywho. i would end up spending about $600 less dollars than the alternative route but would have to get that logo shaved off! haha..

reverse CCOs are wack looking. Personally i dont see the point. Might as well go commander size imo.
So i am thinking of building my cco similarly to my govt, same sights, same controls etc. To keep things uniform for training purposes. TO make the difference between the two minimal and very managable (from a tactics/simplicity point of view)

The .125 tang width blade can be modified by a local gun smith to .085 to fit a Springfield 1911, but other .45 brands don't fit these blades.
I am wondering if its worth buying a set of LEO take offs for $50 and carefully filing them down to fit?

Anywho..
I got a guy at work who ordered a set of grips from linville knife and tool. They look nice are the same design as LD's..
I sent them an email about getting a custom bobtail set made with my logo enscribed in the grip.
Got pics yet focker? haha..
I worked on my truck for like 5 hrs today. Then went for a run around my neighborhood, shower, hair cut, and about to cook dinner for the wifey!

im gonna go Kart EzFit. Seems to be the best way to go. They dont have a commander length listed on brownells, so im gonn ahave to call kart and talk to them.
Truegiant
01-24-2010, 07:12 PM
they have kart ez-fit's all over gunbroker. there was one guy in texas who was selling them for like 20-30 percent off what kart / brownells was charging.
anywho.. I was thinking of picking up one of those or a wilson NM barrels.
I am prlly going to end up sending the frame and slide off for more machine work when i get it in.. not sure yet though

did u make the caspian order offical?
I havent heard from seth in regards to my order.
Truegiant
01-24-2010, 07:18 PM
I havent heard from him either. He assured me he was swamped with orders. They sold like 100 something combo's in a couple of days which is like 10x more than there normal work load. He said he would gurantee me my deal and all specials for as long as it took to get the order complete and the work order to me if that makes sense.
By then I might have enough for the extra money for the aluminum goodies!!!

yep legit. But unnecessary.
I got a referral from a guy at the local range for metal targets and a company out of south carolina that builds all of the military's ranges up there in SC and LE ranges in SC. I did alot of research online and figured I was ready to take the plunge and start doing some meet and greets. The one company up there called me today on sunday of all days and he is anxious to send a rep down to walk me through the whole process from concept to construction management. I spoke with him about the connex shoot house ideas and he was extatic.
I am just about done with the list of metal and paper targets i would like for the range. This stuff adds up quick! Concrete and asphalt costs are horrible right now. Once I get some more accurate overall cost numbers i will let you know what the bank says!
Going to try and do the 5 partner program. Give everyone equal percentage with the option to buy out 1 partner a year for the first 5 years. I still have to do some more research on this type stuff.
Anywho.. Pics look good. I am meeting with the local know all tell all of FR in savannah this week sometime and will let yo uknow what he says about the state bonding/insurance requirements.
Anywho.. I am headed to the shower and to bed!

All the Desert Eagle is a substitute for someone who has a small penis. Desert Eagles are way to heavy to actually carry and use in a combat scenario. I can have 3 accurate shots off w/my 1911 in the same time it would take a person to get one shot off with a Desert Eagle.

I know those 2011's dont look that great, but they are one of the only double stack 1911's on the market that with a slip grip mod can actually be thinner than a single stack. I have been looking into building another race gun after we finish the fighter and the bobtail. I cant pass up 17-19rds of lead with less tweight than a gi model. Anywho.. Just a thought. Inspection of the fighter follows: I typed this up and sent it to the original builder.
Well I finally got to tear down the pistol today and these are some of my findings.
Bevel Job on the slide is extremely wavy. At one end there is no bevel and at the rear of the slide its huge.
Magwell blend looks like it was done with a roll disc and a dremel and there are two really wavy spots in it. I took a flat file and some ignition files and cleaned it up but it still isnt perfect.
Thumb safety primary face was filed at an angle and is giving an inconsistent feel in the locked position. It does pass both click test and functions test so no biggy.
Strut and strut pin are both horribly loose. Strut actually has lateral movement when hammer is moved.
The throat of the barrel face is not even. I am not sure if it was done from wilson combat that way or hand throated but the left side of the throat has alot of machine marks in it and isnt even.
Feed ramp was chewed up. I fed about 75rds of jhp through it to see how it fed. Most of the ftf and fte i had were with the JHP's. I personally dont feel any gun should ever have and problems feeding any kind of ammo. Especially a "custom" one.
The ejector was loose. So loose in fact that I could wiggle it side to side. I am still investigating this problem.
Sear face has alot of machine marks in it. Not sure where they came from but they are there. It also had to really large burrs on it.
Trigger did not pass the "fall out of the frame" test. I have always been tought that the trigger should be just tight enough that when you flip the frame upside down the trigger should fall out. I put some dyken blue on the trigger bow and trigger itself and there were alot of wear marks. I am not sure if this gun was bead/media blasted before it was coated but there was alot of grit and what appeared to be media in the trigger stirrup/slot area. I cleaned it up with some popsicle sticks and sandpaper and also cleaned up all the burrs on the trigger itself. It functions a million times better and hopefully will not lock itself to the rearward position ever again.
For the most part everything else looked to be in pretty good shape. I cleaned up alot of the rough surfaces and checked fit of everything else. I didnt see any file marks on the barrel to indicate it was a hard fit barrel. The headspace checked out and the barrel to slide clearance checked out as well. I am hoping there are no hiccups on the next outing. If I do continue to have problems with the gun and if it is ok i would like to send the gun back to you Mr. James and have you look over the gun since you are the original builder. I plan on doing a full media blast and coat here in the next couple of weeks if everything checks out ok and since I have already started fixing all the little imperfections in the gun.

In reality I have already sold one of the holsters, the surefire e2d, the simmonich grips for $150.
I got to keep 6 wilson combat mags, the surefire x300, the $100 worth of ammo at $480 worth of value. Danny you know what I paid for it so if i have to ditch it do the math. I will be in good shape. Chris James the builder was appauled that I found that many inconsistancies in his work. I am no expert builder but I know the basics. I would hate to send it off to one of the big name guys and have them fine tooth comb it. Anywho.. Its a great pistol that just needs the finishing touches. When I get done tinkering with it and I take it out and run it this weekend barring any problems it will be in the mail to you if you get time to coat it. I have 6 more items to sell and then I will be ready to make another brownells order for my future bobtail build. I am putting a list of things for you to work on with the fighter if you get time. Anywho.. Long day. I worked on my boat for about 4 hrs trying to figure out a wiring problem. $100 worth of parts later and still no luck. Hoping to get it fixed and on the water tomorrow.
On a side note. If this one runs like shit after this weekend the original builder said he would fix it free of charge i pay shipping. He also said for the hassle he would do some machining work on another frame/slide if i chose to pick one up. I might send him the milspec to see if he is any better now that its been two years since he did this one supposedly. Anywho..
Later.

That is one of the best looking SA Champions I have seen, not like I have seen a lot, but man that looks good! Did you do the Bobtail and refinish yourself?
Anybody had a chance to check out the new Kimber Super Carry Pro? I have been trying to find some more information on it, like when it is suppost to be shipped to dealers and then hopefully some reviews soon after!
