my 00 civic si dont want to get warm. it would warm up when im at a stop, but once i hit the highway it goes below cold. most likely its my thermostat, but i was wondering...do you think it is safe to drive to new orleans with it being this way?

it would be fine, you just wont have any heat.
-your heat runs off anti-freeze, if you run without thermostat than your coolant will keep rotating causing it to cool down very fast. even with thermostat or not, the BIG cooling radiator will cool it down too much also witch will cause no heat in your vents.
-theres different heat, your block has its own heat, the engine will be fine unless your planning to head way up north without a thermostat, it's temperature will stay hot enough to function.
one way of having heat with a BIG radiator is by covering haft the front of your radiator with a pice of cardboard.
but check first if your thermostat is stuck or not. prob not if you run anti-freeze and not water.

if you have the money to drive to new orleans then stop being cheap and go get a new thermostat. they cost like 10 bucks and take 10 min to replace.

x2, if it sticks closed you'll run hot and be on the side of the road...

I wouldn't take that long of a drive with a malfunctioning thermostat. Change it asap.

Yeah who's to say it won't get bad and go the other way. I would def. Change the thermostat before that trip.

Nothing goes bad, it either sticks open or closed.
It's cheap and simple to replace, do it.

It sounds like your car doesn't even have a T-Stat installed. if you don't, the car might not ever get up to optimal running temp.

like they all said check the t stat if not take to nalley let matt look at it he will tell you whats up real quick.

its not that un-useful. i was lazy and had a trash bag covering my radiator every morning (45 min drive in the cooold) cause therm was bad, and it worked great. car warmed up to where it normally should, and i had heat. i did this for 3 months. but i do agree in just changing it.

Not to mention that your gas mileage will suffer by not running at operating at full temperature. The hotter the engine is, the better the gas mileage, eg. a 195 degree thermostat will give you slightly better gas mileage than a 185 degree thermostat.

WHOA WHOA WHOA!
If you are replacing a JDM thermostat you must do things much differently than a measly USDM b16.
FIRST! you must dismantle the motor completely
SECOND! you must wash all the parts in soapy warm water
THIRD! you must put the pieces back together in alphabetical order
FOURTH! you must then use only your hands and a pitchfork, replace the thermostat.
IF THESE RULES ARE NOT FOLLOWED, YOU WILL HAVE A SIEZED BLOCK WITH HYDROLOCK AND CRANKWALK AND A TORN FLAP VALVE AND A SPUN BEARING IN YOUR BLOCK AND ALL YOUR VALVES WILL NO LONGER WORK.
thank you.

Go ahead and replace the thermostat first. If your engine isnt reaching operating temp the ecu is going to stay in open loop which enriches the AFR, meaning you're gonna get worse fuel economy than if it were in closed loop.

i bet you cross threaded the cheap plastic fine threaded drain plug, go buy a new one and try again....why the hell did you drain all the coolant for a thermostat anyway????

did you get all the flush out, cause that shit doesn't have good cooling properties...its designed to only be ran through the system for a max of 6 hrs of driving.

Yea I got all of it out. When its just idling it runs at normal temp but as soon as I start driving it cools down within about 5 mins.

Some thermostats are designed to stay open once they go bad, so that the car doesn't overheat.
