View Full Version : Sports Opinion on changing college bowl games?

This gets brought up every year it seems. Do you want the bowl system of be changed, and if so, how should it be done? Just your opinion.

I hate all the arguing that goes on at the end of each season about which team deserves which bowl, especially the Rose Bowl. I wish they could have a tournament format like college basketball does. Maybe a sweet 16 type thing. The remaining four games could still be called their regular bowl names, with the championship game still called the Rose Bowl to keep sponsors happy, etc. Not saying its possible, i would just rather see a tournament format and see which team truly deserves to be the nat'l champs.

I want them to at least try a playoff system for one year. IF it doesn't work like it should then go back to the BCS.

They should just rename the SEC Championship to the BCS Championship. It would save everybody's time.

On a more serious note, I like the idea of a playoff system, but I also like seeing two teams play when practically everybody on the teams are healthy and as trained as they can be for their bowl game.

You mean like tonite. Garret Gilbert played well but the game was bullshit without Colt McCoy playing.

I guess I can officially say it. Congratulations to Alabama on THEIR 11TH National Championship (NOT THEIR 13TH!!!).

A playoff format is always talked about but I really dont see it happening in the near future. Something needs to happen to stop all the bitching from the weak ass teams that swear up and down that they can hang with the big dogs.

You have a good point. It is nice to see two teams have a whole month off to stay healthy and train hard for one specific game. And all the commentary that leads up to the game throughout the month makes much more exciting too.
I guess i've always had a grudge against the bowl system since a few years back when Auburn went undefeated the entire year and was still ranked 3rd at the end of the year without a shot at the Rose Bowl.

playoffs no doubt. it works great for 1-aa football. it would work great for 1-a. They could still have all their pointless, papa johns bowl, kellog wheeties bowl, and all that kind of shit as well outside the playoffs if they wanted.

Why do you keep bringing up the Rose Bowl?

I'm in favor of a playoff, but I would live with a plus 1.

Im sorry for bringing it up so much, the whole two times I said it. It's only the most important college game of the year.

So you dont think the BCS Champ game is as important as the Rose Bowl? Are you a Big 10 or Pac 10 fan?

Its ok, there are so many bowls that it gets confusing. Even though BCS Champ game is kind of a given...

that's why I say they incorporate the bowl games into the playoffs. Have your semifinal and championship games your orange bowl, rose bowl, etc. then they can still have their smaller, nobody gives a shit.com bowl for those not in the playoffs.

Exactly. Imo the top 16 should play and distribute the sponsors based on the level of their current bowl game. Then keep whatever is below it so some schools can still get their trophies. The system right now just isn't fair enough, but I do believe it got it right this year. Alabama was unstoppable.

Lol, that is what I thought. Weren't the BCS championship and rose bowl at the same stadium or something? I kept hearing the two names in the same sentences all over ESPN and thought they were the same.

BCS Champ game rotates between the sites of the other 4 BCS Bowl games.

but I do believe it got it right this year. Alabama was unstoppable.

As was Boise St. They hold the same 14-0 record.

I also wouldnt say Bama was unstoppable. Texas had a true Freshman QB playing since the first quarter and as soon as he got his feet under him he shredded the Bama pass defense.

BTW, dont look at the final score. It is vastly inflated and doesnt show just how close the game was.

I think Bama probably would have played a different game if McCoy had stayed in. Boise State was good, but it's hard to say if they were really on the same level Texas and Bama were. Which is what sucks about the BCS, it's too subjective. We will never know if Boise was better than the champion, just like Utah last year.

I completely agree, it would have been a very different game. With the way the Bama pass defense played though, I honestly think they would have been shredded. With Colt in, you cannot drop 6 into coverage either because he was a threat to run, unlike Gilbert. That would have left Texas receivers even more open than they were.

I dont think Boise had a chance against any of the top 5 teams, but then again, no one really thought the Giants had a chance against the Pats a couple years ago either.

Utah is a very different story. They were a physical team, which is what Bama is. Bama also came in flat and figured they would easily win because they were just playing Utah.

.

and Boise didn't stand a chance against Ok State a couple years ago as well. Boise St. has had one constant the last few years, and that is exceptional coaching. That can make the difference in athleticism. It won't cover your ass every time, but it's worked so far for them. I think Bama beats Boise 7 out of 10 times. Good enough of a chance to win a NC though.

Too much money wrapped up in Bowl games for it to get changed. BCS is bullshit. Too many ass clown bowl games.
