Radar detectors are only illegal in the following states: Virginia, Illinois, New York, New Jersey and Washington DC. They are illegal in New York, Minnesota and California only because you can't put anything on your windshield.
Jammers or scramblers are illegal in all 50 states. Later, QD.

Yep, Valentine is really good. I used to have one but it somehow got lost when I moved. Check it out and get it. You wont regret it.

There not good.
Don't waste the money...The only way I could even see them being half decent is if it was only being use for Radar and not for the "Laser" feature. Which majority of the time that is what a cop is going use to detect your speed with anyway. Don't waste the money between false alerts its not worth it

I have an Escort 8500 it has saved my ass so many times. True in ATL all cops use laser, but when your traveling the mostly use K or KA bands. As long as they are driving the cant shoot you with laser.
I travel alot, so most cops i pass are usally going the other was running radar.

true i love my 8500... they rate it with the valentine depending on which magazine you look at.
and not all atl cops use laser. they dont have money in the budget for it. most are ka, i have seen ka quiet a few times, and x once. but laser is definitely a problem though.

Someone once told me the best way to know if a cop is ahead is if there is SBS ahead.
Sudden
Braking
Syndrome
Or something along those lines. This has saved me a ton of times. If I see people braking ahead, there is probably a cop.

That is only the case in bigger cities where they can afford or are willing to purchase laser. Not all places have that. I have only ran across a handful of cops using laser here. Radar detectors are far from a waste of money.

Back around 1998-1999, I started off with an Escort Passport 8500. After 7-8 years with that unit, I upgraded to the X50 version. Just last year, I switched a 9500ix. 11+ years of being ticket-free, yes, I love it. :D

The first one has been found the most reliable on comparisons over the past few years but the 2nd link looked interesting. Hope this helps.
I can say that I have several detectors less than $99 that pick up almost as good as my V-1 or Escort/Passports. We have played with them quite a bit even with laser and sometimes they will catch the laser way ahead of you (maybe hitting another car) so they are not completely useless against laser. However if there is not a vehicle in front of you and they tag ya with a laser then your pretty much paying the ticket.

helps for the times cop hits person in front of you, also last time mine went off it was on the freeway and gave me a mile heads up that there was a speed detection device ahead, thought that was pretty cool.
