View Full Version : DIY: Stop having an ugly primer paint job.

Semi old write up, but I figured I'd post it anyways..

So, lets face it, EVERYONE hates a primered car, and also, not everyone can afford to drop a couple grand on a paint job. I know I can't, so I spent some time with my friends doing some research on how to paint cars and decided to paint my car with rattle cans(hold your tongue before you flame).

Supplies needed:
-2 tacky clothes ($3)
-2 scotch bright pads ($5)
-Your choice of paint. I used "True Blue" from Krylon w/ the new style cans. The new style of cans run about 4 bucks at walmart and they have a fan tip on them so you can spray up and down so it spreads evenly, and not in a circle.

1. Wash the car, dry it off good, and tape it off.
http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/98/l_335851cd3dba452abc6c0f13aaccb5f1.jpg

http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/91/l_9d686961f3c443b98a57be2a3863d0c3.jpg

2. Sand down the car with the scotch bright pad and then DONT TOUCH IT. decide where youre going to start painting first and go over it with a tacky cloth. This will help pull all the dust/grease off the car so nothing will be under the paint. (no pics)

3. Start painting.
I painted my roof black to match all the black on the windows.
http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/80/l_3dfd58bfde5344dcb0e6012e3c258b2b.jpg

I also pulled off my grille and rear center garnish and painted them black.

http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/97/l_7ddd3c7967f9420195fac27432a870d8.jpg

Then, I painted the car.

http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/82/l_9b50a5730650475d90c0fcb850ad78d9.jpg

4. Let it sit in the sun and bake a little to help set the paint/de-tape.
http://i42.tinypic.com/2w2iphd.jpg
http://i44.tinypic.com/2zhp1jk.jpg

5. Put it back together, if you pulled off anything. Use a hose pipe WITHOUT pressure and rinse off the car to get all the paint dust and stuff like that off.

IMHO it looks 868798 times better, and its not primer anymore, so if you're one that just wants to get rid of primer, and your not big on paint then this is a good idea for you. In all I paid about $35 for everything and had about half a can left over. The car HAS NOT been buffed/clear coated..ever. Pics over been over the last 8 months its been done. :goodjob: driffftooo away and not worry about killing your 2k paint job.

If you can't afford a real paint job then I wouldnt do this either. More work for yourself when you want to do it right. But it's IA and for the people that rock spray painted cars of any color they won't understand and it's not like you can teach stupid anyway. At least this is better than primer so it doesn't absorb moisture but it still looks bad unless you pay somebody to spray it with a hose everytime you are driving it.

Nice. I'm over the primer look, and flat black.

you and me both, i was primer'd for about 6 months and hated every minute of it and was about to pay a few hundred-1k to do body work and paint my car to get it key'd and scratched by shit on the track or where ever else i go slide.

Its not like there is a set wrong way to paint a car. Some people just care more about other aspects of their car, and would rather sport a rattle can job if it means they can spend the money that they saved elsewhere in the car.

I think that it looks great considering how much the supplies cost to paint it. And even if he does decide to get a "real" paint job later down the road, the sunk cost spent on the current paint job is so minimal that its more than worth it to rock this over primer paint, even considering the extra prep required to repaint it next time.

its paint..yes it makes your car look good. but for what i would have paid to get a gun, compressor, 2 gallons of 2 different color of paint, i could have bought tons of mods. Also, its easier to fix when key'd(which it has been) and when other shit happens

It's a $35 paint job man. I see absolutely nothing stupid at all about it. It's not what YOU would do, great. But for others who might not care, it's great. It's sort of like the internet and people who talk out of their ass......you can't teach stupid. But i'm gonna try with you. :goodjob:

If you don't care about a paint job then why paint it? It looks like a bad paint job to me. It's blue which isn't primer so that's a start but save your money and do it right. I don't want to paint my car because its just going to get keyed? Ugly hazy blue is the same as ugly hazy primer.

For the record I sprayed my bmw 2002 with a gravity feed gun and home depot paint in the garage and it turned out 10000x times better for maybe 25 bucks more. Short memories on here.

Looks like a matte-blue color, guess you won't have to worry about getting scratches on the clear-coat since it doesn't have one. I suppose it's not too bad for a $35 paint job.

You dont remember my 2002 from about 4-5 years ago? Used to be green and the we painted it in the garage with a 26 gallon compressor, old gravity feed gun and exterior enamel that is thinned acetone and japan drier. No clear just thick ass bright blue paint.

Can't blame kids for not remembering as they might have not been driving then. But as you will notice there is no haze and no bullshit and it still cost 80 bucks. But you know what fuck it and spray paint it because that's good enough for you but for people that like cars to shine without being wet then I'd suggest a different option.

The main goal is to lay it on relatively thick then sand it smooth. With a rattle can it will always be uneven and spotty, especially on larger surface areas. Typically it is fine on door jambs or wheels.

There are tool rental places that rent out everything needed. :2cents:

depends on what you get. you could spend $100 or $1000 just depends on what quality of supplies you get, and paint.

Can you tape over the paint? my body is solid to the roof and i want to do a black roof with a different color bottom so if i tape the bottom half off after painting it is going to peel the paint off with the tape?

I can put tape on mine without it peeling off. If you do the prep work before you paint it, you shouldn't have a problem.

its paint..yes it makes your car look good. but for what i would have paid to get a gun, compressor, 2 gallons of 2 different color of paint, i could have bought tons of mods. Also, its easier to fix when key'd(which it has been) and when other shit happens

yeh, i did it before i got my silvia front, and they came with the body line =/

wow 4 gallons of paint , what are you planing on spraying an 18 wheeler? lmao ... 4 quarts tops

dirtragz

If you don't care about a paint job then why paint it? It looks like a bad paint job to me. It's blue which isn't primer so that's a start but save your money and do it right. I don't want to paint my car because its just going to get keyed? Ugly hazy blue is the same as ugly hazy primer.

For the record I sprayed my bmw 2002 with a gravity feed gun and home depot paint in the garage and it turned out 10000x times better for maybe 25 bucks more. Short memories on here.

i agree , plus go ahead and try to put good paint over this krylon and see what happens , its cant be buffed, and it will cost you 150 bux in sand paper to have it removed , not including 1 weeks worth of labor from a skilled tech , i just dont see where people think this is a good idea ... imo ... p.s. im a certified auto body tech and have 8 years of exp.. ( my motto - if you dont have time to do it right the first time when will you find time to redo it?)

Ever think of trying Duplicolor paint + their spray on clearcoat? I think that's what I saw in the mag that was referenced a few pages back.

Dirtragz knows! I've taken wheels in to paint that were done in Krylon\Rustoleum...first time I sanded the wheels down and started to spray primer. Must have been some residue left. Wrinkle city...had to re-strip them with aircraft paint stripper. Never again will I work on someones stuff that was painted in Krylon...What would have been a few hours work turned into a full day.

What about different spray paints that are made for wheels? I honestly would've never thought to use Krylon on my car in any way.

Stick with duplicolor if you have to use spray :) It's the only spray paint I've had the least amount of headaches with when spraying automotive paint over. I usually use Dupont / SEM products too so who knows maybe someone with PPG could spray over Krylon/Rustoleum without problems. I am unsure as to what it is in those paints that causes a chemical reaction and wrinkle in the finish.
