I really don't see what is ridiculous about a flying spaghetti monster as a choice of religion.

This is no less ludicrous then believing a child was born from a virgin and the father is a great mover of the universe and all existence named "yahweh". Then the child grows up to perform magical feats until eventually allowing himself to be nailed to a plank by a foreign conquering army for an idea that all humans are going to burn in a fiery pit inside the earth for all eternity for acting upon their basic survival instincts and desires for pleasure unless humanity asks for forgiveness. Then afterwards, this son of yahweh comes back as an undead spirit to haunt our world still asking everyone to accept his ghost as a lord and master and he will forgive them for these naughty deeds and allow them into the house of yahweh up in the sky.
